Macrobenthos of a sublittoral sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Vanosmael, C.; Willems, K.A.; Claeys, D.; Vincx, M.; Heip, C.H.R..
The benthic fauna of a linear sandbank, the Kwinte Bank, in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea was sampled on ten stations in September 1978. Density and species composition of the macrofauna and sediment characteristics have been studied. The Kwinte Bank shows a gradient from finer sediments in the south to coarser sediments in the north, resulting from the tidal current pattern in the region, and can be considered as a biogeographical island as the bank is surrounded by a region of much finer sediments. The macrofauna consists of 73 identified species and has an average density of 4910 ind./m² and an average diversity of 2.5 bits/ind. Interstitial polychaetes predominate and among those <i>Hesionura augeneri</i> is the most abundant...

Zonation and structuring factors of meiofauna communities in a tropical seagrass bed (Gazi Bay, Kenya) OMA
De Troch, M.; Gurdebeke, S.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
This study deals with the relation between tropical meiofauna and environmental variables by comparing the 'benthic' (i.e. in the bare sediment adjacent to seagrass plants) and the 'epiphytic' (i.e. in samples including seagrass plants) meiofauna associated with five seagrass species from the high intertidal to the high subtidal zone in Gazi Bay (Kenya). Ordination and variance analysis revealed three distinct 'benthic' and two 'epiphytic' meiofauna assemblages. These assemblages corresponded entirely with those identified for the seagrass species: a high intertidal pioneer association (<i>Halophila ovalis/Halodule wrightii</i>), an intertidal climax assemblage (<i>Thalassia hemprichii</i>) and a high subtidal pioneer association...

On the cultivation of free-living marine and estuarine nematodes OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
Although a large body of literature exists on the systematics and ecology of free-living marine and brackish-water nematodes, key questions on the nature and magnitude of interactions between nematodes and other organisms in the benthos remain unanswered. Relatively few authors have investigated live nematodes in food web studies or in experiments dealing with the nematodes' response to a varying environment. It is mainly for the latter purpose that attempts have been made to maintain, rear and cultivate selected species. This paper describes the methodology used for the maintenance, rearing, and eventual permanent agnotobiotic cultivation of a variety of estuarine nematodes. Spot plates, where small samples of sediment or macrophyte material are...

The meiobenthos of subtidal sandbanks on the Belgian Continental Shelf (Southern Bight of the North Sea) OMA
Vanaverbeke, J.; Gheskiere, T.; Vincx, M..
The Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS) is characterized by a set of isolated subtidal sandbank systems, which greatly increase the habitat heterogeneity of the area. The meiobenthos of these sandbanks was investigated during 1997 and 1998. In total, 10 sandbanks have been sampled, belonging to three different geographically isolated systems: the Flemish Banks, the Hinder Banks and the Zeeland Banks. No obvious differences in sedimentological characteristics between the sandbanks were found, but biologically some differences could be detected. The more offshore Hinder Banks had the most diverse meiobenthos, while the Flemish Banks harboured the lowest number of meiobenthic taxa. Seasonal and regional differences in terms of densities are a result of a coupling...

Do meiofauna consume primary production?: about many questions and how to answer them OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
In view of their densities, benthic meiofauna are potentially important consumers of primary production. Feeding on diatoms and other microalgae has been documented in a variety of benthic meiotaxa, including many species of the numerically dominant nematodes and harpacticoids. Still, a detailed account of the exact diet of most species, and of the quantitative importance of primary producers in it, is lacking. For nematodes, the presumed nutritive importance of diatoms mostly derives from rather hypothetical links between buccal morphology and food. On the basis of such links, the proportion of nematodes supposedly feeding on the diatoms may amount to as much as 85%, suggesting meiofauna to importantly graze on microalgae. In estuarine and shallow coastal...

Deep-sea meiofauna communities in Antarctica: structural analysis and relation with the environment OMA
Vanhove, S.; Wittoeck, J.; Desmet, G.; Van den Berghe, B.; Herman, R.; Bak, R.P.M.; Nieuwland, G.; Vosjan, J.H.; Boldrin, A.; Rabitti, S.; Vincx, M..
The metazoan meiofauna in the region off Kapp Norvegia, Antarctica (Weddell Sea: 71°S, 12°W), was collected from depths between 211 and 2080m. Total meiofaunal abundance ranged from 815 to 5122 ind. per 10 cm² and total biomass from 126 to 966 µg dwt per 10 cm². Nematodes dominated the samples (range 83 to 97%) followed by harpacticoid copepods, polychaetes and kinorhynchs. A typical skewed length frequency distribution was obtained with most nematodes in the 0.4 to 0.6 mm size-class. The meiofauna communities were primarily influenced by bathymetric depth and food availability (e.g. organic matter and microbiota), which in turn are suggested to be directly related to phytoplankton blooms and associated sedimentation pulses. Standing stock and distribution...

The infaunal macrobenthos under East African <i>Ceriops tagal</i> mangroves impacted by epibenthos OMA
Schrijvers, J.; Camargo, M.G.; Pratiwi, R.; Vincx, M..
The interactions between macrobenthic in- and epifauna of a mid-intertidal <i>Ceriops tagal</i> (Perr.) Rob. stand were studied in order to test the relative importance of epibenthic predation pressure on and resource competition with the macro-endobenthos. The study is the fourth in a series of papers based on exclusion experiments in two different parts of the mangrove system at Gazi Bay in southern Kenya. The permanent and visiting epibenthos were excluded using cages. Densities of the macrobenthic taxa Oligochaeta (families Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae), Amphipoda (genera <i>Grandidierella</i> and <i>Ampelisca</i>), Insecta larvae (family Dolichopodidae), Polychaeta (families Nereidae and Terebellidae),...

The systematics and ecology of free-living marine nematodes OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Vincx, M.; Smol, N.; Vranken, G..
Nematodes are the most abundant metazoans in marine (littoral, estuarine, coastal and oceanic) sediments, extending from the high-water mark into the deepest oceanic trenches (Nicholas, 1975). All marine free-living nematodes are considered to be members of the meiobenthos; small organisms, mainly metazoans, which are separated from the larger macrobenthos either on a methodological basis (i.e. as all animals passing a 1 mm or a 0.5 mm sieve) or a taxonomic basis (i.e. particular animal groups such as Nematoda, Harpacticoida, Gastrotricha, Kinorhyncha, Tardigrada, Foraminifera etc. which consist exclusively or mainly of small species living in sediments). In most circumstances, nematodes are numerically the dominant group of the meiofauna. In fact, they...

On the identity and nomenclature of <i>Paracanthonchus caecus</i> (Bastian, 1865), with a redefinition of the genus <i>Paracanthonchus Micoletzky</i> (Nematoda, Cyatholaimidae) OMA
Vincx, M.; Sharma, J.; Smol, N..
A historical review of the systematics of <em>Paracanthonchus caecus</em> (Bastian, 1865) and a comparison of specimens from different localities show that this “species” in fact comprises four distinct species. <em>Paracanthonchus caecus</em> Micoletzky, 1924 nec <em>P. caecus</em> (Bastian, 1865) is designated as the valid type species of the genus <em>Paracanthonchus. P. heterodontus</em> (Schulz, 1932) and <em>P. thaumasius</em> (Schulz, 1932) are re-established. <em>P. caecm</em> sensu Gerlach 1965 is considered as a distinct species: <em>P. gerlachi</em> sp.n. <em>P. canadensis</em> sp.n. is described and is very close to <em>P. caecus</em>...

Changes in the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area of <i>Pomatoschistus minutus</i> and <i>P. lozanoi</i> (Pisces, Gobiidae) OMA
Arellano, R.V.; Hamerlynck, O.; Vincx, M.; Mees, J.; Hostens, K.; Gijselinck, W..
The <i>Pomatoschistus minutus</i> (Pallas) and <i>P. lozanoi</i> (de Buen) stock of the ebb-tidal delta of the former Grevelingen estuary was sampled monthly from September 1992 to October 1993. Sagittae were extracted and the areas of the sagitta and sulcus acusticus were measured with a digitizer. The frequency response and auditory threshold of these two sympatric goby species were determined from the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area (S:O ratio). The S:O ratio of <i>P. minutus</i> increased while in <i>P. lozanoi</i> the S:O ratio was constant with increasing standard length. The average S:O ratio of <i>P. lozanoi</i> was significantly higher than that of <i>P....
