Blake Zoologia
Moreira,Luciano Andrade; Zanuncio,José Cola; Picanço,Marcelo Coutinho; Bruckner,Claudio Horst.
The objective of this research was to study the effect of feeding on Eucalyptus leaves on the life and fecundity tables of Tynacantha marginata Dallas, 1851 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Higher mortality of this predator occurred during second week of life, when the nymphs were starting second instar. The fecundity table showed that the nymphal period of T. marginata lasted four weeks, with viability of 57,9% and total longevity of 21 weeks. Egg oviposition period took 10 weeks. The population parameters (R0, rm and λ) showed a 50.69 times populational increase after one generation.

Efeitos da fragmentação florestal sobre vespas e abelhas solitárias em uma área da Amazônia Central Zoologia
Morato,Elder F.; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de O..
The effects of forest fragmentation on tree-hole nesting solitary wasps and bees were investigated at a site 90 km north of Manaus, Brazil. Wasp and bee faunas were monitored in continuous terra firme forest, forest fragments of 1, 10 and 100 ha, natural gaps in continuous forest and deforested areas. These habitats were studied in terms of abundance, richness, diversity and similarity. The wasps and bees were monitored monthly during June 1988 through June 1990 by means of a trap-nests technique. A total of 1529 nests of wasps of 24 species and 405 nests of bees of 14 species were collected. The number of species of wasps and bees varied little among the habitats. The genus Trypoxylon Latreille, 1796 (Sphecidae) accounted for 79% of wasp nests and Centris...

The influence of a diet based on putrid horse meat over the post-embryonic development of Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius, 1775) under controlled conditions (UR 65 10% and 14 hours of photophase) was compared with the results obtained using a meat broth diet to which other sources of animal and vegetable protein were added. The flies were maintained at 30ºC, from egg until mature larvae spontaneously abandoned the diet. They were then transfered to a climatized chamber at 27ºC. The larvae and pupae viability and the weight of the mature larvae were significantly inferior, when a diet based on meat broth was used, even though the larvae period was significantly increased with this diet. This type of diet did not charge the time of development of the...

Sexual colour patterns in the sandperch Pseudopercis numida Ribeiro (Osteichthyes, Pinguipedidae) Zoologia
Paiva,Melquíades Pinto; Andrade,Magda Fernandes de.
This communication deals with the sexual colour patterns in the sandperch Pseudopercis numida Ribeiro, 1903, a benthonic fish of commercial importance, endemic to the Brazilian continental shelf, occurring off the coasts from Espírito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul States. The males have the head, the dorsal part of the body, and the pectoral and caudal fins blackishes, whereas the females have them brown-yellowishes. Such patterns are constant characters, not related to maturity or breeding seasons.

Alvarenga,Érika R. de; Bazzoli,Nilo; Santos,Gilmar B.; Rizzo,Elizete.
Reproductive biology and feeding of Curimatella lepidura (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889) were studied in Juramento reservoir, São Francisco River basin, Southeastern Brazil. Histological analyses and gonadosomatic indexes revealed females and males in reproductive activity from October to March and total spawning occurring from January to March coupled with the peak of spermiating males. In the dry season, the fishes accumulated energetic reserves for reproduction during a short rainy season. The species presented sexual dimorphism, being females larger than males and sexual maturation occurring close to 7.7 cm standard length for females and 7.1 cm for males. C. lepidura presented iliophagous feeding habit, ingesting mainly sediment/detritus and a...

Aspectos gametogênicos e histoquímicos de Iphigenia brasiliana (Lamarck) (Bivalvia, Donacidae) da Lagoa de Itaipu, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Mesquita,Eliana de Fátima Marques de; Abreu,Marta Guimarães de; Lima,Francisco Carlos de.
Gametogenic and histochemical aspects of an edible bivalve, lphigenia brasiliana (Lamarek, 1818) from Itaipu Lagoon, Niterói, State of Rio de Janeiro, were studied. Between May 1998 and October 1999 a total of 120 clams were picked up. Samples of 10 animals were collected once a month. Specimens were fixed in Bouin's fixative for 4 hours or less and transferred to 10% formalin for 24 hours. The shell lenght has been measured with the valves lightly opened to permit the penetration of fixative solution deeply in the tissues. Transverse sections including digestive diverticula, mantle, gills, gonad and foot were obtained from the total body. After fixative treatment, tissues sections were embedded in paraffin, cut routinely at 5 µm and stained with Harris's...

Observações sobre a nidificação e desenvolvimento de Chrysemys dorbigni (Dumeril & Bibron, 1835) (Testudines. Emydinae) na Estação Ecológica do Taim, Rio Grande do Sul Zoologia
Keausei,Lígia; Gomes,Norma; Leyser,Karin L..
Chrysemys dorbigni is a common diurnal turtle in the Taim Ecological Station. Though females may choose nesting sites in the same area they do it isolately, not in groups. Data on female nesting site selection, building of nest and egg laying are given. Under laboratory and field conditions development was followed from the egg stage to the emergence of hatchlings and growth of juveniles. One to 16 eggs are laid per clutch. Nesting activity is coincident with periods of higher temperatures in the field. Abiotic conditions and incidence of predation have been considered to estimate the success of clutches.
