Diversity of soil spiders in land use and management systems in Santa Catarina, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Rosa,Marcio Gonçalves da; Brescovit,Antonio Domingos; Baretta,Carolina Riviera Duarte Maluche; Santos,Júlio Cesar Pires; Oliveira Filho,Luís Carlos Iuñes de; Baretta,Dilmar.
Abstract: The ability of spiders to spread over contiguous areas (Arachnida: Araneae) is directly related to soil management conditions. The objective of this work was to study the effect of land use system (LUS) on the abundance and diversity of soil spider families and their relationship with soil physical and chemical properties. The evaluated LUS were: native forest, eucalyptus reforestation, pasture, crop-livestock integration, and no-tillage crop. Samples were collected in three municipalities of Southern Plateau of Santa Catarina, considered as true replicates, during winter and summer. A total of 270 samples was taken in each area and season. The sampling points were arranged in a grid of 3 × 3 m, spaced by 30 m. We evaluated soil physical,...

Anurans of a riparian forest in Sao Carlos, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sabbag,Ariadne Fares; Zina,Juliana.
We surveyed anuran amphibians in a riparian forest fragment of the Córrego do Espraiado, located at the Universidade Federal de São Carlos, Municipality of São Carlos, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. During March 2009 and February 2010 we did weekly surveys in which we recorded 13 anuran species. The species showed a seasonal reproductive activity. In addition, we found a positive correlation between the number of reproductively active species and photoperiod. We also found that the studied community was more similar to those of transitional areas between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado than those of the nearby Cerrado fragments.

Rocha,Humberto R. da; Freitas,Helber C.; Rosolem,Rafael; Juárez,Robinson I.N.; Tannus,Rafael N.; Ligo,Marcos A.; Cabral,Osvaldo M. R.; Dias,Maria A.F. Silva.
The technique of eddy correlation was used to measure the net ecosystem exchange over a woodland savanna (Cerrado Sensu stricto) site (Gleba Pé de Gigante) in southeast Brazil. The data set included measurements of climatological variables and soil respiration using static soil chambers. Data were collected during the period from 10 October 2000 to 30 March 2002. Measured soil respiration showed average values of 4.8 molCO2 m-2s-1 year round. Its seasonal differences varied from 2 to 8 molCO2 m-2s-1 (Q10 = 4.9) during the dry (April to August) and wet season, respectively, and was concurrent with soil temperature and moisture variability. The net ecosystem CO2 flux (NEE) variability is controlled by solar radiation,...

Dangerous neighborhood: saurophagy between syntopic Tropidurus lizards Biota Neotropica
Passos,Daniel Cunha; Monteiro,Felipe Augusto Correia; Nogueira,Carlos Henrique de Oliveira.
Saurophagy constitutes an important source of mortality among lizards and has been reported for the genus Tropidurus. However, the extension of this behavior remains unknown. Herein, we record the predation of T. jaguaribanus by its congener T. hispidus. This is the first report of saurophagy among different species of syntopicTropidurus. Furthermore, whereas published records of saurophagy tend to be directed against juveniles, this case involved two adult individuals.

New records of Forcipomyia (Pterobosca) incubans (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) parasitizing wings of Odonata in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Guillermo-Ferreira,Rhainer; Vilela,Diogo Silva.
Forcipomyia (Pterobosca) incubans Macfie (1937) (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) is recorded here for the first time for Brazil. Females were collected in the Brazilian Neotropical Savanna parasitizing the wings of Erythrodiplax juliana Ris (1911), Erythrodiplax aff. anomala Brauer (1865) and Erythemis credula Hagen (1861), all Libellulidae dragonflies. A map of potential distribution of this species in the New World is also provided. The results suggest that its distribution may range from southern South America to Mexico, with higher densities in the Brazilian and Colombian Tropical Rain Forests.

Mollusc assemblage in an urban bay nearby a marine extractive reserve, Florianópolis - SC, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gandara-Martins,Ana Luiza; Almeida,Tito Cesar Marques de.
have described the spatio-temporal variation of mollusc assemblage in a coastal urban bay near a Marine Extractive Reserve (RESEX), where several human activities are performed. Uni and multivariate analyses were conducted considering spatial (six sampling stations) and temporal scale (30 surveys from 2002 to 2008) and two associations were recognized. We identified 48 species from 28 families belonging to four classes: Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Polyplacophora, and Scaphopoda. The Sand Tidal Flat association had a contribution of more than 90% of Anomalocardia brasiliana (Gmelin, 1791) as well as a higher diversity and similarity among surveys. The Mud Bottom association had a lower similarity among surveys due to the low abundance of species. The feeding...

Temporal changes in caiçara artisanal fishing and alternatives for management: a case study on the southeastern Brazilian coast Biota Neotropica
Lopes,Priscila Fabiana Macedo; Begossi,Alpina.
This paper describes a case study of the changes in fishing that occurred in a Brazilian coastal community after a 10 year interval (1992-2002). There was a decrease in the mean amount of fish caught daily (from 14 kg to 11.32 kg) and annually (from 4.2 t to 3.4 t) and in the richness of species caught (from 21 to 17 species); there was also a low similarity in the species composition of the fish landings (Morisita-Horn index Ch = 0.24). These changes suggested a decline in the locally exploited fish populations, which probably caused the discontinuation of commercial artisanal fishing. However, the diversity of fish caught by hook and line and purse-seine fishing was higher in the second period, whereas there was no significant difference in the diversity...

Endemic angiosperms in Bahia Coastal Forests, Brazil: an update using a newly delimited area Biota Neotropica
Ostroski,Piera; Saiter,Felipe Zamborlini; Amorim,André Márcio; Fiaschi,Pedro.
Abstract: The forest along the coast of Bahia state, in northeastern Brazil, has been acknowledged as an area of endemism for several groups of organisms. The first study concerning endemic angiosperm species in this region, through which 395 taxa were registered, was conducted 15 years ago. However, this number is probably underrated. In this article, we present an updated checklist of angiosperm taxa in Bahia Coastal Forests (BCF) based on geographic distribution data available from the Brazilian Plant List (Flora do Brasil 2020). The records were checked in herbaria, recent taxonomic literature, and, when necessary, reviewed by experts. The final checklist consists of 547 taxa endemic to BCF, distributed in 69 families, with seven endemic genera:...

Bird-termite interactions in Brazil: A review with perspectives for future studies Biota Neotropica
de Vasconcelos,Marcelo Ferreira; Hoffmann,Diego; de Araújo,Mércia Caroline; Vasconcelos,Prinscila Neves.
We present a review on the principal interactions between birds and termites in Brazil. We found 218 bird species feeding on termites or using termitaria for nesting or perching. Termites were mentioned as food source for 179 bird species. Alates were the most consumed caste. Termitaria were mentioned as nest site for 45 bird species. Some bird species also perch on the top of termite mounds to search for their prey or to conduct territorial and/or courtship displays. Considering all interactions between both animal groups, little is known about the identification of termite genera or species. Therefore, we suggest more detailed studies to be conducted on the natural history and ecology of interactions between birds and termites in Brazil.
