On some species of the oriental earthworm genus Pheretima Kinberg, 1867 Naturalis
Gates, G.E..
Pheretima long has been known to have more species than any other oligochaete genus though no one has yet been in a position to determine how many of them have any real claim to recognition even as old-fashioned museum taxa. Intrageneric relationships are unknown primarily because somatic anatomy was derogated in the classical system of the Oligochaeta. Accordingly, if one wishes to learn whether any specimen at hand is of a known or undescribed taxon it is necessary, first of all, to check through appropriate portions of a 16-page table in Michaelsen's monograph (1900) where species are grouped according to location of the spermathecal pores. If identification is impossible, as often must be the case, a laborious search through the literature of the last...

A contribution to our knowlegde of the Sigalioninae Naturalis
Horst, R..
Though our knowledge of the Sigalioninae much increased in the last years thanks to the assiduous investigations of Mc Intosh, Pruvot et Racovitza 1), Darboux, Willey a. o., yet there still reigns a good deal of confusion about the exact diagnosis of the genera. Sthenelais simplex Ehl. 2) f. i. has rightly been ranged by Augener among the genus Leanira 3); Leanira Giardi Darb.4) according to the investigations of Marenzeller belongs to Sthenelais 5) and Thalenessa stylolepis Willey 6) will prove, as I presume, to be a species of Sigalion. Partly this may be ascribed to the circumstance, that only a few of the investigators could dispose of a large material and therefore must borrow their knowledge from the often inadequate descriptions of others; but it...

New records of Malacoceros fuliginosus (Claparède, 1869) (Polychaeta, Spionidae) from the Netherlands Naturalis
Jacobs, R.P.W.M.; Dubbers, F.A.A..
INTRODUCTION During a preliminary investigation in 1977 and the beginning of 1978 on the benthic infauna of the seagrass communities formed by Zostera marina L. and Zostera noltii Hornem, in The Netherlands, the polychaete Malacoceros fuliginosus (Claparède, 1869) was found. In Europe this spionid has been recorded earlier from Sweden (Hannerz, 1956), Denmark (Rasmussen, 1956, 1973), Germany (Westheide, 1966; Giere, 1968), England (Day, 1934), France (Bellan, 1964; Guérin, 1975) and The Netherlands (Wolff, 1973). In The Netherlands only two specimens had been found, viz. one in the mouth of the Oosterschelde and another one in the North Sea. During our investigation many animals were collected, mainly in Lake Grevelingen, a stagnant salt-water lake in the...

Morphology and DNA sequence data reveal the presence of Globodera ellingtonae in the Andean region Naturalis
Lax, P.; Rondan Dueñas, J.C.; Franco-Ponce, J.; Gardenal, C.N.; Doucet, M.E..
Potato cyst nematodes, G. rostochiensis and G. pallida, are the most economically important nematode pests of potatoes worldwide and are subject to strict quarantine regulations in many countries. Globodera ellingtonae was recently described from Oregon (USA), with its host-plant in the field being still unknown. Roots of Andean potatoes from the North of Argentina have been found attacked by this nematode, providing further evidence that this is a potato cyst nematode species, along with G. pallida and G. rostochiensis. New information about morphological, biological and molecular aspects of G. ellingtonae is provided for diagnostic purposes. The Argentine population showed morphological differences from specimens from Oregon; therefore, new diagnostic...

A contribution towards our knowlegde of the Polychaeta of South Africa Naturalis
Horst, R..
1. Amphinomidae and Aphroditidae. Professor Max Weber, during a short stay in South Africa in 1894, made a small collection of Annelids, which he kindly handed me over for examination. As I found among them some species, which for the first time are mentioned from this interesting region, where the fauna'sof the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific meet each other, it will not be without interest to publish a short note about them. Euphrosyne capensis Kinb. 1). (— polybranchia Schm.) 2). At Seapoint, near low watermark, 8 specimens were collected, the largest of which has only a length of 16 mm., whereas its breadth measures 6 mm.; the number of the segments of this specimen amounts to 45. Eurythoë complanata (Pall). This species, already mentioned by Potts from...

New Species of the Genus Ammotrypane Rathke Naturalis
Horst, R..
Among the collection of Annelida of the Leyden Museum I met with some specimens of the interesting genus Ammotrypane, collected in the Malay Archipelago, Our knowledge of this genus of Opheliïdae is rather scanty. However as, according to the investigations of Grube 1) and Kükenthal 2), the number of segments and branchiae in each species are fixed, I presume that the species, mentioned in this paper, hitherto have not been described. The only species mentioned till now from that part of the Indo-Pacific are Ammotr. remigera Ehl. and — polycheles Gr. 3), also found in the neighbourhood of the Aroe-isles, like three of our species. Ammotrypane kampeni n. sp. Fig. 1. A specimen, measuring in length 35 mm. and provided with 58 pairs of parapodia, could not be...

The Parotoplana jondelii species-group (Platyhelminthes: Proseriata): a microturbellarian radiation in the Mediterranean Naturalis
Delogu, V.; Curini-Galletti, M..
Seven new Parotoplana species (Proseriata: Otoplanidae) from the Mediterranean, belonging to the P. jondelii complex, are described. They are characterized by the presence of numerous (14-22) copulatory spines. These are characteristically broad, and arranged in a girdle around the distal portion of the ejaculatory duct. In most species, dorsal and ventral spines are distinctly different from the rest of the spines of the girdle. This morphology of the copulatory spines is apomorphic for the genus Parotoplana, and supports a close relationship among these species. The new species (P. axi sp. n., P. crassispina sp. n., P. carthagoensis sp. n., P. gracilispina sp. n., P. ichnusae sp. n., P. obtusispina sp. n., P. pulchrispina sp. n.) are distinguished by...

New records of Marine Turbellaria from Norway Naturalis
Velde, G. van der.
INTRODUCTION During an excursion to Norway organized by the Department of Systematic Zoology of the Rijksuniversiteit of Leiden in August 1973, I had the opportunity to make some observations on Turbellarians of salt-marshes and rocky shores of the Trondheimsfjord (63o 37' N 9° 43' Ε) and the Stjörnfjord (63o 47' Ν 10° 7' Ε), a fjord connected with the Trondheimsfjord. MATERIAL AND METHODS The greater triclad flatworms were mainly collected by turning stones on the salt-marshes and rocky shores. On the salt-marshes soil samples were taken. Each sample covered an area of 25 cm2 and was 3 cm thick. For obtaining the animals the soil samples were put in a jar filled with sea water. Lack of oxygen, due to decay of the vegetable matter, and the light of a lamp...

Polychaeten aus den Zoologischen Museen von Leiden und Amsterdam I Naturalis
Augener, H..
