DNA barcodes, expanded distribution, and redescription of Apanteles hemara Nixon, 1965 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Microgastrinae), a potential biocontrol species against amaranth leaf-webbers in Africa Naturalis
Fernandez-Triana, J.; Beaudin, M.; Achterberg, K. van; Agbodzavu, M.K.; Othim, S.T.O.; Nyamu, F.W.; Fiaboe, K.K.M..
The microgastrine parasitoid wasp Apanteles hemara Nixon, 1965, is currently being considered as a potential biocontrol agent of amaranth leaf-webber pests in Africa. To facilitate future research and identification of the species, we characterize it from an integrative taxonomy perspective by providing a comprehensive morphological redescription, extensive illustrations (including the first images of the holotype), DNA barcodes, wasp biology, host data (Choreutidae and Crambidae caterpillars), and updated geographical distribution of the species (including eight new country records). Despite a wide distribution across four major biogeographical regions (mostly within the Old World tropics), the species seems to be relatively uniform from a molecular and...

The morphological range in Mallotus (Euphorbiaceae) and a taxonomic revision of its section Rottleropsis (including Axenfeldia) in Malesia, Thailand and Africa . Naturalis
Sierra, S.E.C.; Aparicio, M.; Gebraad, M.J.H.; Kulju, K.K.M.; Welzen, P.C. van.
The range of diagnostic morphological features in the whole genus Mallotus is reviewed as background to the taxonomic treatment of section Rottleropsis s.l. Special emphasis is given to the indumentum, habit, stipules, leaves, extrafloral nectaries, domatia, inflorescences, flowers, pollen and fruits. Notes on the geographical distribution, ecology, pollinators, fruit and seed dispersal, and uses of the genus are also presented. The section Axenfeldia is reduced to sect. Rottleropsis on account of the absence of suitable morphological characters to distinguish them. A taxonomic revision of 38 species of sect. Rottleropsis s.l. from Malesia, Thailand and Africa is presented, together with regional and synoptical identification keys, distribution maps and...

Reestablishment of Pycreus section Tuberculati (Cyperaceae) Naturalis
Reynders, M.; Goetghebeur, P..
Pycreus sect. Tuberculati was created by Chermezon to contain a single species with derived nutlets: P. divulsus, a Malagasy endemic. Kükenthal transferred this species to his new section Muricati. However, a detailed study of the nutlet epidermis shows P. divulsus is not closely related to the other species Kükenthal placed in the latter section. In addition P. divulsus subsp. africanus is upgraded to the species level based on its larger, smooth nutlets and African continental range.

Markets, mixtures and molecular methods: investigating medicinal plant and edible orchid diversity in Tanzania and Zambia Naturalis
Veldman, S..
Medicinal plants are an important source of primary healthcare for many people in Tanzania. These medicinal plants are harvested from the wild, and increasing commercial trade poses a serious threat to local plant populations. Currently it is unknown which species are traded and in what amounts. Across the southwestern border in Zambia, the traditional dish chikanda has transformed from a niche product to being a mainstream delicacy. One of the main ingredients are wild-harvested orchids, and these have become depleted throughout the country as an effect of the increased trade. It is unclear which orchid species are targeted and might be at risk of overharvesting. The aims of my doctorate are to map harvest and trade of Tanzanian medicinal plants and...

Revisionary notes on Negulus O. Boettger, 1889, a genus of minute African land snails (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Vertiginidae) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
The genus Negulus is reviewed; only four Recent species, restricted to continental Africa, are recognized. The genus is extinct in Europe, being only recorded from Tertiary deposits. A key to the shells of the Recent species (all figured) is supplied. The anatomy is as yet unknown. A sinistral shell of N. abyssinicus is described from among a series of paralectotypes in the Leiden Museum, the first such abnormality in the genus (figured). A fair amount of shell material has become available (among which some historical specimens) so that metric data may be compared with greater confidence. Recent occurrence is established/confirmed for Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Zaire, Zambia, Malaŵi, and Bioko (Fernando Poo). The small size of the shell...

Studies on the Streptaxidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda Pulmonata) of Malaw^ i 5. Description of Gulella meredithae spec. nov. Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Gulella meredithae spec. nov. is described from the uplands of central and northern Malawi. It belongs to what has been termed the G. browni-group (better called the G. radius-group), an assemblage of Central and East African taxa with small shells with a noticeably acute apex, with more or less smooth nepionic whorls and with marked costulation on the remaining whorls. Attention is drawn to the striking juvenile apertural dentition.

The early specimens of the potto Perodicticus potto (Statius Müller, 1776) in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, with the selection of a neotype Naturalis
Smeenk, C.; Godfrey, L.R.; Williams, F.L..
The potto was first recorded and figured by Willem Bosman in 1704. The name Lemur potto Statius Müller, 1776 is exclusively based upon Bosman’s account and figure, which are reproduced in full. The type locality is Elmina on the Gold Coast, the present Ghana. No type specimen was collected. The early pottos in the Leiden Museum are listed and their history is given, with special reference to the animals obtained by H.S. Pel. The publications on this material are reviewed. An adult female, RMNH 39375: mounted skin and skeleton acquired by Pel in 1849 at Dabocrom (Dabo Krom) near Sekondi, coastal Ghana, is designated the neotype of Lemur potto Statius Müller, 1776. The neotype is extensively described and figured. Taxonomic notes on the putative (sub)species...

Burgt, X.M. van der.
Two new tree species, Didelotia korupensis and Tessmannia korupensis (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae), are described and illustrated. Didelotia korupensis is the 12th species in the genus. It is an understory tree to 15 m tall with an often leaning stem to 30(–53) cm diam. Didelotia korupensis is only known from an area of c. 4 km2 in and near the permanent plots along the P transect in the southern part of Korup National Park in Cameroon, where 51 trees have been recorded so far. Didelotia korupensis is assessed according to IUCN criteria as Endangered. Tessmannia korupensis is the 13th species in the genus. It is a canopy tree to 39 m tall with a stem to 105 cm diam. Tessmannia korupensis is known from seven groups of trees of 9 to 43 trees each, in and...
