The Comparative Energy Efficiency of Organic Farming 21
Azeez, Ms Gundula; Hewlett, KL.
Organic farming is generally a more energy efficient system of food production. Comparative analyses of fifteen crop and livestock sectors indicate that UK organic farming uses around 26% less energy per tonne of output on average. The main energy saving is from the non-use of industrially produced inorganic nitrogen fertiliser. Organic farming is more energy efficient for wheat, most field vegetables, milk, red meat and pigs, but it is less efficient for poultry production.

Maßzahlen der Energieeffizienz: Brennwerte oder Lebensmittel erzeugen? 21
Haas, Guido.

Monitoring strategies and scale-appropriate hydrologic and biogeochemical modelling for natural resource management 21
Bende-Michl, U.; Volk, M.; Harmel, D.; Newham, L.; Dalgaard, T..
This short communication paper presents recommendations for developing scale-appropriate monitoring and modelling strategies to assist decision making in natural resource management (NRM). These ideas presented here were discussed in the session (S5) ‘Monitoring strategies and scale-appropriate hydrologic and biogeochemical modelling for natural resource management’ session at the 2008 International Environmental Modelling and Simulation Society conference, Barcelona, Spain. The outcomes of the session and recent international studies exemplify the need for a stronger collaboration and communication between researcher and model developer on the one side, and natural resource managers and the model users on the other side to increase knowledge in: 1)...

PlantyOrganic: Results 2013 21
Hospers-Brands, A.J.T.M.; Anema, D.; Bus, M.C..
2013 was the second year of the "PlantyOrganic" system development in practice. The six-year rotation is laid out and measurements took place at soil and crop. With the exception of the potatoes in 2013 all crops had the pre-crop as foreseen in the design. The fertilizers used were completely produced in the own system, as foreseen in the system design. The amounts of nitrogen applied were about 45 % higher than in the design. Soil nitrogen is measured and used as input in the nitrogen model NDICEA. There was a sufficient match between measured and calculated level of soil mineral nitrogen. The crops performed well, with a high yield in carrots and oats, and a disappointing yield in wheat. In wheat nitrogen was limiting for the yield, we do not yet have a...

Low Greenhouse Gas Agriculture: Mitigation and Adaptation Potential of Sustainable Farming Systems 21
Niggli, U.; Fließbach, A.; Hepperly, P.; Scialabba, N..
Is low greenhouse gas emission (GHG) agriculture possible? Is it, in fact, desirable? In seeking answers to these two basic but extremely relevant questions, this study examines current farming practices, and incorporates scientific databases from longterm field experiments as case studies for low GHG agriculture. Further, the study examines the changes that will be needed for low greenhouse gas agriculture systems to become a reality. It also elucidates the adaptive capacity of agro-ecological farming system approaches, using organic system case studies from the scientific literature. Each year, agriculture emits 10 to 12 percent of the total estimated GHG emissions, some 5.1 to 6.1 Gt CO2 equivalents per year. Smith, et al. (2007) and Bellarby, et al....

Short-term nitrous oxide emissions from pasture soil as influenced by urea level and soil nitrate 21
Petersen, Søren O.; Stamatiadis, Stamatis; Christofides, Calliopi.
Nitrogen excreted by cattle during grazing is a significant source of atmospheric nitrous oxide (N2O). The regulation of N2O emissions is not well understood, but may vary with urine composition and soil conditions. This laboratory study was undertaken to describe short-term effects on N2O emissions and soil conditions, including microbial dynamics, of urea amendment at two different rates (22 and 43 g N m-2). The lower urea concentration was also combined with an elevated soil NO3- concentration. Urea solutions labelled with 25 atom% 15N were added to the surface of repacked pasture soil cores and incubated for 1, 3, 6 or 9 days under constant conditions (60% WFPS, 14°C). Soil inorganic N (NH4+, NO2- and NO3-), pH, electrical conductivity and dissolved...

Reducing Global Warming: The Potential of Organic Agriculture 21
Müller, Adrian; Davis, Joan S..
For a successful outcome at COP 15 in Copenhagen in December, viable policy paths for effective climate change mitigation need to be provided. In addition, adaptation is unavoidable. One key point is the integration of agriculture (accounting for 10-12% of global emissions, Smith et al. 2007) in a post-2012 agreement. Its main potential lies in its significant capacity to sequester CO2 in soils, and in its synergies between mitigation and adaptation. This potential is best utilized employing sustainable agricultural practices such as organic agriculture (OA). Conservative estimates of the total mitigation potential of OA amount to 4.5-6.5 Gt CO2eq/yr (of ca. 50 Gt CO2eq total global greenhouse gas emissions). Depending on agricultural management practices,...

Cultivation methods in organic farming are controversial discussed as the traditional ploughing system faces a variety of disadvantages, especially with regard to soil con-servation. To address these problems a mound cultivation system has been devel-oped. This paper presents a case study (on-farm-research) combined with expert interviews and economic modelling results. The aims of the study are to identify the most important cost driver, to calculate the cost of mound cultivation with regard to energy consumption and labour costs and to formulate conditions where this system is economically viable. Experience from on-farm-research and modelling show that the system is in particular suitable for large farms where the field labour organisation is a...

Valuing international marine resources: A meta-analysis on the Baltic Sea 21
Ahtiainen, Heini.
The study uses meta-analysis to provide insights into the value of international marine resources, illustrating the issue with the case of the Baltic Sea. Willingness to pay for water quality improvements varies systematically with factors such as a country's income level, characteristics of the change in water quality, water body type, study year and methodology. The results of the meta-analysis are applied to benefit transfer in order to assess the distribution of the benefits of marine protection measures between the Baltic Sea countries and to compare the results with previous research. The net benefits of protecting the Baltic are positive, but they are asymmetrically distributed between the littoral countries.

Vassy, Agathe; Vincent, Audrey.

Kelm, Michael; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
Nitrogen (N) leaching, especially in the form of nitrate (NO3-), still represents a major environmental impact from agriculture. In order to estimate potential N leaching losses under conditions on commercial farms in Northern Germany, N leaching was analyzed by using ceramic suction cups on representative fields on eight organic and conventional farms. On dairy farms, permanent grassland and maize for silage were analyzed as the main fodder crops. On arable farms, one crop with a high risk and one with a low risk of N leaching losses were selected. On permanent grassland, N leaching was pronouncedly lower on organic farms. If grass/clover on organic farms was ploughed, high amounts of N were leached in the following winter, irrespective if grass/clover...

Effects of green manure storage and incorporation methods on nitrogen release and N2O emissions after soil application 21
Carter, Mette S.; Sørensen, Peter; Petersen, Søren O.; Ma, Xiuzhi; Ambus, Per.
More efficient use of green manure-derived nitrogen (N) may improve crop yields and reduce environmental impacts in stockless organic arable farming. In this 3-month incubation study, we tested a new strategy where green manure leys are harvested and preserved until the following spring either as compost mixed with straw or as silage of harvested ley biomass. Grass-clover compost or silage was soil-incorporated by either simulated ploughing (green manure placed at 15 cm depth) or harrowing (green manure mixed into the upper 5-cm soil horizon) in order to assess treatment effects on net release of plant-available N, nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, and soil respiration. Grass-clover silage provided the highest net N release with similar results for the two...

Productivity and N-leaching in organic dairy grass-arable crop rotations 21
Eriksen, J; Askegaard, M; Søegaard, K.
Due to increasing size of Danish organic dairy farms uniform grazing of all cropped land becomes inexpedient due to long distance to the milking facilities. We investigated nutrient dynamics and feed production in two dairy crop rotations with internal differences in proportion of grazing and cutting. One six year crop rotation represents close to the farm buildings (barley [Hordeum vulgare L.] undersown with grass-clover [Lolium perenne L.–Trifolium repens L.] - 4 years of grass-clover - spring barley/catch crop) and another represents further away (barley undersown with grass-clover, 2 years of grass-clover -barley/catch crop - maize [Zea mays L.]/catch crop - lupin [Lupinus angustifolius]/catch crop). In each of the crop rotations was made five...

Feed nitrogen conversion in lactating dairy cows on pasture as affected by concentrate supplementation 21
Steinshamn, Håvard; Höglind, Mats; Garmo, Torstein H; Thuen, Erling; Brenøe, Ulrik Tutein.
The effect of concentrate supplementation on nitrogen (N) intake and excretion in grazing lactating dairy cows was determined in three herds in Norway. Grazing trials were conducted with each herd in June and August for two consecutive years. The average supplementation was 1.8 (S.D. 2.1) kg DM/day, and the concentrate was based on grain with a N content ranging from 18.7 to 24 g/kg DM. Herbage DM and N intake were reduced with increasing supplementation, but total DM and N intake increased. Milk yield and protein content increased by 1.1 kg milk and 0.28 g protein per kg milk for each kg extra concentrate. Milk N excretion increased with increasing supplementation (6.5 g N/kg DM), and N utilisation improved by 11.7 g N per kg N intake per kg extra...

In organic farms, the internal carbon and nitrogen fluxes are of great importance. They are connected with the soil fertility (humus contents, biological activity, and soil struc-ture) and yield potential; some of them may affect the environment. The approach used in the described model software allows quantifying management related and siting dependant C and N fluxes and also the resulting emissions as starting point for an emission inventory from farms.

Energieeffizienz im ökologischen Landbau – am Beispiel der Wertschöpfungskette „Brot“ – 21
Prem, Werner; Hechenbichler, Johannes; Lörcher, Michael; Manhart, Hugo; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
For the Hofpfisterei, one of biggest eco-bakery in Germany, the communication of the sustainable production of their bread plays an important role. The Hofpfisterei wants to introduce an environmental management over the supply chain, in order to improve among other things the energy efficiency. The potential is determined by a test net of organic farms by means of life cycle assessment. The reduction of energy input on the farms is to be judged as small. On the other hand the potential is high for energy output. The results show, that alone by the use of the clover grass in the market fruit farms, the energy outputs can be increased clearly. The goal of an energy autarky over supply chain can be achieved by this.

Norwegian farmers’ willingness to participate in a local climate crowdfunding program - results from a national survey 21
This report presents a main deliverable of work package 3 in the Coolcrowd project, an international research project funded by the Research Council of Norway. The aim of the project is to develop a crowdfunding program that would enable travelers to offset their GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions locally by supporting Norwegian farmers who want to adopt more climate friendly practices. The main objective of WP3 is to identify farmers’ interest in participating in a locally crowdfunded climate program. The report analyzes the findings of a national survey investigating farmers’ interest in climate change, particularly mitigation and a local crowdfunding program.
