Effects of free-range and confined housing on joint health in a herd of fattening pigs Organic Eprints
Etterlin, Pernille Engelsen; Ytrehus, Bjørnar; Lundeheim, Nils; Heldmer, Eva; Österberg, Julia; Ekman, Stina.
Background Free-range housing, in which pigs have access to both indoor and outdoor areas, is mandatory in organic pig production in Europe, but little is known about the effects of this housing on joint health in pigs. A high level of joint condemnations at slaughter has been reported in organic free-range pigs in Sweden, compared with pigs raised in conventional confined housing. We hypothesised that biomechanical forces imposed on the joints of pigs that range freely promote the development of osteochondrosis and lead to joint condemnation. We compared the prevalence of osteochondrosis and other joint lesions (e.g. arthritis, traumatic) in the elbow and hock joints of 91 crossbred Hampshire (Yorkshire×Landrace) fattening pigs that were housed in a...

Sistema orgânico de produção de pescado de água doce. Organic Eprints
Boscolo, Wilson Rogério; Feiden, Aldi; Neu, Dacley Hertes; Dieterich, Fabiana.

Prediction of Enzyme Digestibility of Organic Matter (EDOM) using Spectroscopy and Chemometrics Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, Johannes Ravn; Gislum, René.
Wheat and triticale are a primary energy source in the feedstuffs in swine diets. Enzyme digestibility of organic matter (EDOM) is an index used in the feed evaluation system for pigs. This is based on the close linear relationship between the in vitro enzyme digestibility of organic matter (EDOM) and in vivo total tract digestibility of energy (Boisen & Fernández, 1997). EDOM is a complex parameter calculated from the protein, carbohydrate, starch and fibre fractions undergoing a three step enzymatic incubation. It is therefore a challenge to relate EDOM to specific chemical bonds.

Compatibility of animal husbandry practices of registered organic farmers with organic animal husbandry standards (OAHS): an assessment in Uttarakhand Organic Eprints
Bodapati, Subrahmanyeswari; Chander, Mahesh.
Organic fanning is increasingly being seen as one sustainable option to farmers, among the alternatives to conventional input intensive farming systems. Uttarakhand in India is promoting organic agriculture state state through registering the farmers and providing them necessary support including marketing in crop sector. However, these registered organic farmers, who maintain two or more than two livestock species under crop-livestock mixed farming systems, not yet geared to organic livestock production per se. As 'organic' is a process claim rather than a product claim, the study on the compatibility of animal husbandry practices of registered organic farmers with the recommended organic livestock production standards, may provide an idea of the...

Exercise yards for dairy cows Organic Eprints
Puumala, Maarit; Paasonen, Merja.
The required area per cow depends on the use of the exercise yard. If all the cows are forced to go out at a certain time and if they are fed in there, an area between 5 and 10 m² per cow is needed. But if there is no feeding and the cows have free access to the yard only 4-5 m² per cow is needed. It is recommended to design the yard so that the area covered with soft material can be blockaded when ever it gets too wet. The design of sloping has to be very careful. The laboratory tests have shown that with filters consisting of straw, peat or woodchips it is possible to significantly lower the nutrient content of runoff waters.

Organic farming on grasslands Organic Eprints
Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Friebel, Ludvik; Konvalina, Petr; Friebelova, Jana.
Sustainable agriculture has currently been considerably supported by the EU which positively affects development of organic farming in EU member states. Along with expansion of organic farming itself, importance of its production and non-production function rises as well. Both these functions are expected to be mutually balanced so as the organic farms were not focused on one-sided production. To reach such balance the grant programmes should be suitably set so that the farms were motivated to farm on arable land and permanent grasslands on one side and fulfil non-production function of agriculture on the other side as well. The balance of grant programmes can be estimated according to the way how organic farming is carried on. This article is focused on...

Sustainable development of smallholder crop-livestock farming in developing countries Organic Eprints
Ates, S.; Cicek, H.; Bell, L. W.; Norman, H. C.; Mayberry, D. E.; Kassam, S.; Hannaway, D. B.; Louhaichi, M..
Meeting the growing demand for animal-sourced food, prompted by population growth and increases in average per-capita income in low-income countries, is a major challenge. Yet, it also presents significant potential for agricultural growth, economic development, and reduction of poverty in rural areas. The main constraints to livestock producers taking advantage of growing markets include; lack of forage and feed gaps, communal land tenure, limited access to land and water resources, weak institutions, poor infrastructure and environmental degradation. To improve rural livelihood and food security in smallholder crop-livestock farming systems, concurrent work is required to address issues regarding efficiency of production, risk within systems and...

Internal ambience of bee colonies submitted to strengthening management by adding broods. Organic Eprints
Brasil, Daniel de F.; Guimarães, Michelle de O.; Barbosa Filho, José Antonio D.; Freitas, Breno M..
This study aimed to investigate the ideal brood area to be introduced for strengthening Apis mellifera colonies, considering variations in the hive's internal ambience. Therefore, eight colonies were equipped with data loggers for recording variations in temperature and humidity inside the hives. Then, these colonies were split in four treatments involving the swapping of four, three, two and one brood comb between strong and weak colonies. Growth in the amount of brood and food stores to the four colony strengthening treatments was assessed counting the comb cells to record changes in the brood and food area. The colonies tended to restore their normal thermoregulation within four hours after they had been manipulated and the hive cover had been closed,...

The human-animal relationship and animal health management Organic Eprints
Waiblinger, Susanne; Mülleder, Cornelia; Menke, Christoph.
he aim of the paper is to present new results on the association of human-animal relationship (HAR) and dairy cow health and to present a framework on the way of action of the HAR. 80 organic and conventional dairy herds in cubicle loose housing were visited once. Animal health parameters and influencing factors HAR, housing and management were recorded. The relative importance of factors for the prevalence of lameness, lesions at carpal and tarsal joints and somatic cell counts (SCC) was determined by multivariate analysis. Behaviour and attitudes of stockpeople were predictors for prevalence of lameness, SCC and lesions at the carpal joints, supporting a direct effect of the quality of the HAR on health. Further, the better the stockperson's relationship...

Organic Beef Production - Sire Breed Comparison Organic Eprints
Fallon, Richard; Leavy, Elaine.
The results to date, from this sire breed comparison study indicate that with the contrasting Aberdeen Angus and Charolais sire breeds that is possible to achieve animal performance data comparable to well managed conventional suckler calf to beef systems (300 kg carcass for heifers in Nov and 400 kg carcass for steers in March). Similarly the responses to sire breed type, sex and date of slaughter for the organic beef animals are biologically compatible. Organic beef is produced under organic rules in response to consumer demand for organic product. The organic system contributes to the protection of the environment and animal welfare. “We have not inherited the world from our forefathers we have borrowed it from our children” (Kashmiri proverb).
