In Palaeogene times, the 'Southern Bight' of the North Sea functioned as an intracratonic, shallow-marine, siliciclastic basin and accumulated a few meters of gently dipping sediment packages. A fine-scale seismic-stratigraphical model for the Palaeogene was formulated on the basis of a dense, high-resolution reflection seismic grid. In total 13 major seismic-stratigraphical units were defined, based on geometry and seismic facies characteristics. The seismic stratigraphy has been complemented with the results of four cored wells near the Belgian coast, containing a nearly continuous, 200m thick sediment succession of Eocene age. Facies analysis of these cores suggest that part of these sediments were deposited on a muddy shelf and part in a delta... |

The oyster culture, flourishing along the Belgian coast at the beginning of the century, perished entirely in the course of two World Wars. In 1956, it was taken on again intensively in the Scour Basin of Ostend. If we consider the obtained results with the affination of Flat and Portuguese oyster, this 86 ha closed basin, is of an exceptional productivity. Essays on the understanding of the origin of calcified oysters, done from 1960 until 1966, turned out to be very promising and an integral oyster culture from the larvae up to the adult oyster could be observed. In any case the last few years, eventhough compared to before a normal emission of larvae of Ostrea edulis, there has not been a fixation of the origin. Regular samples of... |

M. F. Maury, head of the U.S. Naval Observatory. started to compile meteorological and sea surface data from the logbooks. This allowed him, during the 1840's to expand knowledges in descriptive oceanography. Willing to extend the geographical coverage of his data bank and chartings, Maury wanted to involve merchant navy as well as ships from other nations. This led him to consider favourably projects of universal networks for meteorological data collection such as proposed by the Russian Kupffer in the early 1850's. Maury tried to establish such co-operation when British and US officials came together to uniformize their network. Maury did not succeed to bring the project at an international level. Instead, he only was allowed to call upon an... |

During ecological investigations on the optimum culturing conditions of ciliates, we studied the influence of a number of abiotic factors on the reproductive potential of the hypotrichous ciliate Euplotes vannus Muller, such as the nature and the quantity of food, the temperature and the salinity. The experiments were run in petri dishes of 5 cm diameter containing 5 ml of food suspension, and were always started with conjugants. The microphagous Euplotes vannus thrives on a variety of food media. Excellent results were observed on homogenized bakers yeast, i.e. 10.000-20.000 animals in 5 ml of food suspension. In good culturing conditions the stationary phase was reached in 7 days, which implicates a mean rate of... |

Nitrogen nutrients being, at least at some periods of the year, a limiting factor of primary production in the Sluice-Dock at Ostend, the production or consumption of ammonium and nitrate by the benthic bacterial communities plays an important role in the dynamics of the ecosystem. A methodology is developed to evaluate the fluxes of carbon and nitrogen associated with the microbiological activity and the physical mass transfer in the sediments. It is based on the analysis of vertical concentration profiles of pertinent substances in the sediment, completed with some direct in situ measurements of microbiological activity. This methodology is applied to denitrification, total heterotrophic activity, and nutrification in the two types... |
