Dynamics of proteins, carbohydrates and global DNA methylation patterns during induction of nodular cluster cultures from seeds of Vriesea reitzii Agronomy
Corredor, Jenny; De Conti, Daniela; Guerra, Miguel Pedro; Dal Vesco, Lirio Luiz; Pescador, Rosete.
Tissue culture techniques have been employed for bromeliad mass propagation by means of the morphogenetic route of nodular cluster cultures (NCs). This study aimed to assess protein, carbohydrate and global DNA methylation (GDM) level dynamics during NCs induction from Vriesea reitzii seeds. Seeds were inoculated into Murashige and Skoog (MS) liquid medium supplemented with 4 µM α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) to induce NCs and in culture medium without plant growth regulators to form normal seedlings. Samples collected at 0, 3, 7, 10, 14, and 21 days of culture were analyzed. All parameters assessed showed the same variation pattern. However, seeds inducing NCs showed significantly lower starch (6.0 mg g-1 FM), carbohydrate (10.7 mg g-1 FM) and GDM (11.0%)...

Are sun- and shade-type anatomy required for the acclimation of Neoregelia cruenta? Anais da ABC (AABC)
REINERT,FERNANDA; LEAL-COSTA,MARCOS V.; JUNQUEIRA,NICIA E.; TAVARES,ELIANA S..
Sun and shade plants are often discriminated by a number of sun- and shade-type anatomies. Nonetheless, we propose that among tank-bromeliads, changes in rosette architecture satisfy the requirements for coping with contrasting light levels. The tank-bromeliad Neoregelia cruenta naturally colonises sub-habitats ranging from full exposure to direct sunlight, to shaded environments in sand ridge plains. We quantified anatomical and morphological traits of leaves and rosettes of N. cruenta grown under sun and shade conditions. Cells with undulated lateral walls within the water parenchyma are for the first time described for the family. Under high light, leaf blades were wider, shorter, and yellowish. The rosette diameter of sun plants was less than half that...

Diversity and distribution of epiphytic bromeliads in a Brazilian subtropical mangrove Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUSA,MARIANA M. DE; COLPO,KARINE D..
ABSTRACT It is not unusual to find epiphytic bromeliads in mangroves, but most studies on mangrove vegetation do not record their presence. This study aimed to evaluate the diversity and distribution of epiphytic bromeliads in a subtropical mangrove. The richness, abundance and life form (atmospheric and tank) of bromeliads were recorded and compared among host tree species and waterline proximity. The effects of diameter and height of host trees on the abundance of bromeliads were also assessed. The mangrove was composed of Avicennia schaueriana, Laguncularia racemosa and Rhizophora mangle. We recorded seven bromeliad species of the genera Tillandsia and Vriesea. The waterline proximity did not affect the abundance or diversity of bromeliads, but...

Faria,Ana Paula G. de; Vieira,Ana Claudia M.; Wendt,Tânia.
The leaf anatomy of the species Aechmea subgenus Macrochordion was analyzed to obtain valuable data on their taxonomic delimitation and to identify anatomical adaptations to their respective habitats and habits. All leaves of these species are hypostomatic, and present: peltate trichomes on both surfaces; stomata sunk in epidermal depressions; small epidermal cells with thick walls and inclusions of silica bodies; a mechanical hypodermis; an aquiferous parenchyma; chlorenchyma with fibrous clusters and air channels; and vascular bundles surrounded by a parenchymatic sheath and a cap of fibers. The results are evaluated within an adaptive and taxonomic context. Variations in hypodermic thickening, amount of water parenchyma, position of the air channels and...

Antiulcer activity of ethanolic extract of Encholirium spectabile Mart. ex Schult & Schult f. (Bromeliaceae) in rodents Biol. Res.
Moraes de Carvalho,Katharinne I; Fernandes,Hélio B; Frota Machado,Flávia D; Oliveira,Irisdalva S; Oliveira,Francisco A; Nunes,Paulo Humberto M; Lima,Julianeli T; Silva Almeida,Jackson R G; Meneses Oliveira,Rita C.
This study evaluated the antiulcer activity of an ethanolic extract of Encholirium spectabile (ES-EtOH) by using different standard experimental models of induced acute gastric ulceration. ES-EtOH (100 mg/kg p.o) protected the gastric mucosa against ulceration that was induced by absolute ethanol (53%), ethanol/HCl (75 %), ibuprofen (52 %) and ischemia/reperfusion (43 %). It also restored catalase activity and non-protein sulfhydryl group concentration in the gastric wall of mice that had been treated with ethanol. The pre-treatment of mice with N-nitro-L-arginine (70 mg/kg i.p.) abolished the protective activity of ES-EtOH, which indicates that prostaglandins, antioxidant compounds and nitric oxide synthase activity are involved in the gastroprotective...

Geographic distribution of epiphytic bromeliads of the Una region, Northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Fontoura,Talita; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos.
Many Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest plant and animal species are geographically restricted to Southern Bahia and Northern Espírito Santo States. We investigated the geographic distribution of epiphytic bromeliads in the lowland forest of the Una region (15° 17' 34' S - 39° 04' 30'' W) in Southern Bahia. Specifically, we addressed the following questions: i) what is the extent of each species distribution?; and ii) are the Bromeliaceae subfamilies distributed differently from one another? Almost half of the 40 species (47.5%) occur exclusively in the Southern Bahia-Northern Espírito Santo region and are herein referred as endemic species. The highest percentage of the 15 species of Tillandsioideae (46.7%) occur throughout the South American Continent and...

Epiphytic angiosperms in a mountain forest in southern Bahia, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Leitman,Paula; Amorim,André; Menini Neto,Luiz; Forzza,Rafaela C..
The Atlantic Forest in southern Bahia State, Brazil, has high levels of diversity and vascular plant endemism. There have been few floristic surveys of the mountain forests there, however, especially those focusing on herbs and canopy plants, with studies of Atlantic Forest epiphytes having been limited to the southern and southeastern region of that country. The present study therefore surveyed the epiphytic angiosperms in the Serra das Lontras National Park (SLNP), the distribution of their species among genera and families, and their biogeographical patterns. Fieldwork was performed between February 2011 and March 2012. Collections were made along roads and trails and phorophytes were occasionally climbed and fallen trees and branches examined in order...

Macroinvertebrate fauna associated to the bromeliad Vriesea inflata of the Atlantic Forest (Paraná State, southern Brazil) BABT
Mestre,Luiz Augusto M.; Aranha,José Marcelo R.; Esper,Maria de Lourdes P..
The accumulated water inside the bromeliad leaf rosette is a microhabitat for several animal and plant species. In this study, the associated fauna of bromeliad Vriesea inflata was analyzed related to seasons, bromeliad height in relation to the ground and environmental factors. The samples were seasonally collected in Quatro Barras (a municipality of Paraná State, southern Brazil) between March 1996 and March 1997. The associated fauna was very rich and it was grouped in 23 taxonomic groups, with a dominance of Coleoptera Scirtidae, Diptera and Hymenoptera Formicidae. We found higher abundance of macroinvertebrates in terrestrial bromeliads during the spring/1996 and in epiphyte bromeliads in the autumn/1997.

In vitro culture of Vriesea gigantea and Vriesea philippocoburgii: two vulnerable bromeliads native to Southern Brazil BABT
Droste,Annette; Silva,Anelise Machado da; Matos,Adriana Vieira; Almeida,Júlia Winck de.
Micropropagation studies were carried out using the seeds for establishing an in vitro culture of Vriesea gigantea and Vriesea philippocoburgii. Germination rate of V. gigantea was higher than of V. philippocoburgii. Plantlets of V. philippocoburgii gave rise to many adventitious shoots when cultivated in Knudson basal medium. In contrast, for V. gigantea, a higher salts-concentration was needed, so that the number of shoots was increased by Murashige and Skoog medium. Addition of activated charcoal and naphthaleneacetic acid in regeneration medium allowed the growth of shoots and the formation of roots, confirming the success of in vitro culture. The differences in expression of the genotypes reinforce the need of more research in order to set up the...

Differential capacity of nitrogen assimilation between apical and basal leaf portions of a tank epiphytic bromeliad Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Takahashi,Cassia A.; Ceccantini,Gregório C.T.; Mercier,Helenice.
The leaf is the main organ of the vegetative body of tank epiphytic bromeliads, which may be subdivided into apical and basal parts. Little is known about the existence of morphological, anatomical or physiological differences between these two leaf portions. The objective of this study was to verify the existence of a differential capacity to assimilate nitrogen from urea between basal and apical leaf portions of Vriesea gigantea, a tank epiphytic bromeliad. Plants were cultivated in vitro in the presence of 5 mM urea for 15 days. During this period, the activities of the enzymes glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2) and NADH-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase (NADH-GDH, EC 1.4.1.2) were quantified, as well as the densities of trichomes and stomata found...

Endogenous auxin and cytokinin contents associated with shoot formation in leaves of pineapple cultured in vitro Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Mercier,Helenice; Souza,Beatriz Maia; Kraus,Jane Elizabeth; Hamasaki,Regina Mayumi; Sotta,Bruno.
The in vitro culture of pineapple leaves on a shoot induction medium (SIM) results in the formation of protuberances and further development in shoots, and plantlets. The contents of endogenous indoleacetic acid (IAA) and five cytokinins (Cks), N6(2-isopentenyl)adenine (iP), N6(2-isopentenyl)adenosine (iPR), zeatin (Z), zeatin riboside (ZR) and N6-benzyladenine (BA), present in the basal portion of those leaves, were correlated to the organogenic response that occurs over 15 days of culture. The endogenous auxin/cytokinins ratio was lowest on the 3rd day, mainly due to a strong increase in the iP level. It seems that endogenous iP concentration triggered the induction signal for an organogenic response in pineapple leaf bases. The rise in iP content...
