Forecasting the Adoption of GM Oilseed Rape: Evidence from a Discrete Choice Experiment AgEcon
Breustedt, Gunnar; Muller-Scheessel, Jorg; Latacz-Lohmann, Uwe.
This paper explores farmers’ willingness to adopt genetically modified oilseed rape prior to its commercial release and estimates the ‘demand’ for the new technology. The analysis is based upon choice experiments with 202 German arable farmers. A multinomial probit estimation revealed that GM attributes such as gross margin, expected liability from cross pollination, or flexibility in returning to conventional oilseed rape significantly affect the likelihood of adoption. Neighbouring farmers’ attitudes towards GM cropping and a number of farmer and farm characteristics were also found to be significant determinants of prospective adoption. Demand simulations suggest that adoption rates are very sensitive to the profit difference between GM and non-GM rape...

Essays on the Economics of Environmental Management and Green Reputation AgEcon
Komarek, Timothy M..
Many governments, firms, institutions and individuals have become increasingly cognizant of their impact on the environment, most notably with respect to global climate change. This coupled with a threat of future regulation and a desire for a ‘green’ image, among other reasons, has led firms and institutions to begin critically evaluating and managing their own “carbon footprint”. Effective programs to manage greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) benefit from understanding the preferences of the constituents the program intends to serve. This study uses a survey at Michigan State University to examine the preferences of constituents (students, faculty and staff) for attributes of alternative greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategies. The first essay examines...

The influence of psychographic variables on consumer preferences. The case of ethnic food in Spain AgEcon
Camarena-Gomez, Dena M.; Sanjuan, Ana Isabel.
In the last years, ethnic food has been successfully introduced in the Spanish market. In this research a choice experiment is conducted in order to investigate consumer’s preferences toward ethnic food and the influence of psychographic variables in consumer’s decisions. A nested logit model is employed for this purpose, with a two level nesting structure: the first decision is whether or not to consume ethnic food at all; and the second decision combines ethnic cuisine and the consumption situation. The experiment contemplates three cuisines, Mexican, Asian and Arab; and three consumption situations: restaurant, take away and preparation at home. Three psychographic variables are used to investigate the opt-out decision, which relate to the degree of...

U.S. Consumers’ Valuation of Quality Attributes in Beef Products AgEcon
Abidoye, Babatunde O.; Bulut, Harun; Lawrence, John D.; Mennecke, Brian; Townsend, Anthony M..
A sample of U.S. consumers were surveyed in a choice based experiment in the Fall of 2005 and Spring 2006 to elicit consumers’ preferences for quality attributes in beef products. Based on the resulting data, a random coefficients logit model is estimated, and consumers’ willingness to pay for these quality attributes in beef products is obtained. The results indicate that consumers have strong valuation for traceability, grass-fed, and U.S. origin attributes in a standard rib-eye steak and are willing to pay a premium for these attributes.

USING A CHOICE EXPERIMENT TO ESTIMATE THE NON-USE VALUES OF WETLANDS: THE CASE OF CHEIMADITIDA WETLAND IN GREECE AgEcon
Birol, Ekin; Karousakis, Katia; Koundouri, Phoebe.
Despite wetlands being amongst the Earth’s most productive ecosystems, they have been degraded and lost at an unprecedented rate globally, especially throughout the last century. In recognition of the importance of the crucial ecological functions and economic benefits they provide, international efforts, such as the Ramsar Convention, and European Union level efforts, such as the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), are now in place to ensure conservation, sustainable management and improvement of the remaining wetlands. This paper aims to assist policy makers in formulating efficient, effective and sustainable wetland conservation and management policies by providing them with the results of a valuation study using the Cheimaditida wetland in Greece...

Are Citizens Willing to Pay for Agricultural Multifunctionality? AgEcon
Kallas, Zein; Gomez-Limon, Jose Antonio; Arriaza Balmón, Manuel.
Agricultural multifunctionality is the recognition of the joint exercise of economic, environmental and social functions by this sector. In order to make this concept operative for the design of public policies, it is necessary to estimate the social demand for such functions. The main objective of this article is to present an empirical application in this line. For this purpose we have taken the agricultural system of cereal steppes in Tierra de Campos (Spain) as a case study. The economic valuation technique used is the Choice Experiment. The results suggest the existence of a significant demand for the different functions, although this demand is heterogeneous, depending on the socio-economic characteristics of the individuals.

A Comparison of Auction and Choice Experiment: An Application to Consumer Willingness to Pay for Rice with Improved Storage Management AgEcon
Su, Lianfan; Adam, Brian D.; Lusk, Jayson L.; Arthur, Frank.
Experimental auction and discrete choice experiment are two popular value elicitation methods. Theoretically they should yield the same results but empirical results have been mixed (e.g., Lusk and Schroeder 2004, 2006; Corrigan et al. 2010.) This study uses both methods to determine consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for rice with improved insect control and for rice stored using Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This study investigates two potential reasons – anchoring and information – for why some studies have found apparent inconsistencies between auction and choice experiment results. Results indicate that consumers’ WTP derived in the auction and choice experiments are significantly different. Consumers’ average bids in the auction are higher than...

The proximity of a field plot and land-use choice: implications for land consolidation AgEcon
Grammatikopoulou, Ioanna; Myyra, Sami; Pouta, Eija.
Traditional methods in agricultural economics and agricultural engineering have yielded mixed results when specifying the costs of an unfavourable parcel structure. Concepts related to travel costs and the production function are frequently applied when the costs of farming distant parcels are examined. However, farmers’ perspective regarding preferences for land use is ignored or partly overlapped by predictions made by researchers. Based on applied econometric models fitted to stated preference data, we revealed that the proximity of a field plot is a relevant factor affecting land-use decisions. One-fourth of landowners would change the use of a field plot if the condition of distance was changed. Landowners would continue farming a field plot if its...

ประเมินมูลค่าคุณลักษณะประจำพันธุ์ของข้าวลูกผสมในประเทศไทย Thai Agricultural
Suthipol Saeli; Orachos Napasintuwong Artachinda.
On September 27, 2011, the Rice Department of Thailand certified first two hybrid rice varieties. However, the information about trait preferences remains unanswered. The objective of this study is to derive the trait valuation of hybrid rice in Thailand using a choice experiment estimated by a mixed logitmodel. The survey of396 farmers reveal that resistance to brown plant hoppers has the highest value, followed byhigh yielding and height, respectively. Therefore, rice breeding for high yielding varieties in Thailand should take into account such traits in response to farmers demand.
