Monitoring nutrient turnover during composting has to be based on a constant reference parameter. Is total ash content really a good choice? Organic Eprints

The total ash content is usually considered to be fairly constant during the composting period, apart from addition of minerals by precipitation and losses by seepage. However, our field trials with farmyard manure have shown that the ash fraction insoluble in hydrochloric acid increased much more than the soluble fraction in the same time. If changes are merely caused by composting intensity (e.g. organic matter degradation), both fractions should be accumulated in the same degree. It is hypothesized that the higher rise of the HCl-insoluble fraction indicates a higher amount of soil material in the heaps at the end compared to the beginning of composting, as the insoluble fraction originates mainly in soil-borne silicates while the soluble fraction is...

Organic matter addition in organic farming – Impact on root development and yields in maize and cowpea over dry seasons Organic Eprints

Organic matter and its proper management are vital in tropical organic farming to maintain productivity. A field study thus placed rice straw or Gliricidia leaves on the soil surface or the material was incorporated into soil. The impact of these treatments on soil moisture, root development and yields of organically grown maize or cowpea were evaluated in an Asian dry season. Incorporation increased soil moisture retention in the soil and hence induced better root growth, culminating in higher yields. The impact was greater in maize, especially with Gliricidia leaves. The benefits of incorporating organic matter in dry seasons for tropical organic farming are presented.

In 2009 heeft het Louis Bolk Instituut onderzoek verricht naar het gebruik van versgemaaide en ingekuilde maaimeststoffen voor de bemesting van najaarspinazie op het bedrijf van Joost van Strien in Ens in de Noord Oost Polder. Maaimeststoffen zijn een innovatief teeltsysteem (het zgn. “cut-and-carry” systeem) waarbij gemaaide grasklaver of luzerne, gewassen die als bodemverbeteraar een essentiële rol in de gewasrotatie vormen, direct op eigen bedrijf worden ingezet als hulpmest stof i.pv. deze te verkopen als veevoer. Quality assessment of citrus-processing industry waste compost for organic and conventional farming Organic Eprints

The aim of the work was to verify the potential of citrus by-products for the production of a quality compost to be used in both conventional and organic farming. Two different composts were produced utilizing Pastazzo (mixture of citrus pulp and skins). One of them, to be used in conventional farming, was prepared adding sludges obtained from citrus industry waste water treatment to pastazzo. The other one, whose final destination was organic farming, was produced without the addition of sludge as starting raw material. Chemical parameters were used to evaluate the characteristics of the final product. IP- und Bio-Produktion: Ökobilanzierung über eine Fruchtfolge Organic Eprints

In den vergangenen Jahren wurde die Methode der Ökobilanzierung weiterentwickelt und an die Bedürfnisse der Landwirtschaft angepasst. Mit vergleichenden Ökobilanzen wurden bereits bisher die Umweltauswirkungen der biologischen und integrierten Anbauweise erfasst. Diese Arbeiten beschränken sich jedoch auf die Ebene der Einzelkultur. Im vorliegenden Beitrag stellen wir vergleichende Ökobilanzen über eine ganze Fruchtfolgeperiode vor, die wir im Rahmen eines langjährigen Vergleichsversuches (DOK-Versuch) durchführten. Unter diesen Bedingungen schnitt das organisch- biologische Verfahren ökologisch besser ab als das konventionelle/integrierte.

L’effet de l’association du haricot vert (Phaseolus vulgaris L) avec la courgette (Cucurbita pepo) et d’une fertilisation organique à base de farine de poisson sur le rendement de la courgette dans un système de production biologique. Organic Eprints

Ce travail a été mené à la ferme expérimentale du Complexe Horticole d’Agadir. Son objectif est d’étudier d’une part le comportement de trois variétés du haricot vert associées à une culture de courgette et d’autre part l’effet d’une fumure organique à base de farine de poisson sur le rendement de la courgette (variété ROBERTA) dans un système biologique. L’essai s’est déroulé sous serre de type delta 9. Pour le premier essai, l’effet de l’association a été testé dans un dispositif qui permet de placer une ligne simple de courgette entre deux lignes de haricot, et de façon à ce que chaque plant de courgette soit entouré par six plants de haricot vert. Klimabelastning bør indgå i vurderingen af dyrkningssystemers bæredygtighed. Vi undersøgte udledningen af drivhusgasser under opbevaring og efter udbringning af gødningsprodukter til økologiske sædskifter: Afhøstet kløvergræs som blev ensileret eller komposteret, og plantebiomasse som blev afgasset sammen med gylle. Både afgasset gylle og ensilage af kløvergræs viste positive resultater mht. merudbytte og klimaeffekt.

Phosphat-Mobilisierung durch Haupt- und Zwischenfrüchte nach Düngung von weicherdigem Rohphosphat im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Im Ökologischen Landbau ist weicherdiges Rohphosphat als Phospatdüngemittel zugelassen. Die Effizienz von Rohphosphatdüngemitteln wird insbesondere durch den pH-Wert des Bodens sowie die Phosphat- und Ca-Konzentration der Bodenlösung beeinflusst. Zur Förderung und Stabilisierung der Bodenfruchtbarkeit werden die Böden gekalkt, so dass der pH-Wert mineralischer Böden meistens über 6 liegt. Kalkung dient nicht nur der pH-Wert-Stabilisierung, sondern durch die Zufuhr von Ca2+ wird auch die Bodenstruktur gefördert und stabilisiert. Darüber hinaus wirkt die Kalkung aber einer höheren chemischen Löslichkeit der Rohphosphate entgegen. Die daher auf mit Rohphosphat gedüngten Flächen (mit pH über 6) niedrigere Phosphatfreisetzung kann für die Phosphaternährung...

Bodenbedingte Unterschiede bei der N- und S-Mineralisation von Hornmehl Organic Eprints

Am Sächsischen Landesamt für Umwelt, Landwirtschaft und Geologie (LfULG) in Dresden-Pillnitz wurde im Winter 2017/2018 ein Brutversuch durchgeführt, bei dem der Einfluss der vorherigen Bodenbewirtschaftung auf das N- und S-Mineralisationsverhalten von Hornmehl untersucht werden sollte. Gleichzeitig wurden zwei pelletierte Düngemittel auf Schafwollbasis sowie ein pelletierter Dünger auf Weißkleebasis getestet. Die von einem Schlag, aber 0 (= Freiland), 8 bzw. 17 Jahre unter Gewächshaus-Bewirtschaftung gestandenen Böden zeigten deutliche Unterschiede im Ct-, Nt- und St-Gehalt sowie Nmin-Ausgangs-Gehalt. Ikke noget eller ikke for meget vil det mest nærliggende svar vel være for de fleste økologiske planteavleres vedkommende. For den konventionelle husdyrproducents vedkommende vil svaret formentlig være lige det modsatte. - nemlig at han sidder på en guldgrube. Alle svar kan på den ene side være fuldstændigt rigtige, men de kan på den anden side også være helt forkerte. Jeg vil i det efterfølgende prøve at forklare hvad jeg mener med ovenstående tvetydige svar på spørgsmålet i overskriften.

Fungal population and diversity in organically amended agricultural soils of Meghalaya, India Organic Eprints

The effect of different organic fertilisers (farm yard manure [FYM]; vermicompost [VC]; plant compost [PC] and integrated compost [INT], i.e. a combination of FYM, VC and PC in a 1:1:1 ratio) on the population and diversity of soil fungi was investigated in a maize-French bean trial. Fungal populations were much higher in organically fertilised plots as compared to the control (CTRL) and showed a decreasing trend in the order FYM>PC>INT>VC>CTRL. Altogether, 122 fungal species and two sterile mycelia were isolated from all the plots of which 25 fungal genera belonged to Deuteromycotina, seven to Ascomycotina, four to Zygomycotina and one to Mastigomycotina. Çalışma 2001-2010 yıllarında Ege Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi Menemen Araştırma Uygulama ve Üretim Çiftliğinin “organik” sertifikalı alanında yürütülmüştür. Ana bitki olarak Yalova Yağlık 28 kapya biber çeşidi, ön bitki olarak da fiğ, kırmızı lahana, marul, bakla, brokkoli, kereviz, karnabahar ve bezelye kullanılmıştır. Ackerbausysteme im ökologischen Landbau unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von N-Bilanz und Effizienzkennzahlen Organic Eprints

Auf einem Sandboden und einem Lößboden wurden in Sachsen ab dem Jahr 1992 komplexe Dauerversuche durchgeführt. Es wurden Verfahren von viehlosen (System Marktfruchtbau) sowie von viehhaltenden Betrieben (System Futterbau) in der Anbaufolge mit zweijährigem Leguminosengras, Sommerweizen und Mais simuliert. In den Versuchen wurden außerdem eine stark unterschiedliche Düngungshöhe mit verschiedenen organischen Düngemitteln sowie differenzierte anbautechnische und vegetationsbegleitende Maßnahmen berücksichtigt. Wird unter Feldrandkompostmieten mehr Nitrat ins Grundwasser ausgewaschen als unter landwirtschaftlich und gemüsebaulich genutzten Böden? Gefährden die Kompostmieten das Grundwasser? Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, wurde im Birrfeld die Nitratauswaschung unter Feldrandkompostmieten während sechs Jahren überwacht. Die Resultate sind erstaunlich.

Background: Phosphorus recycling from waste and localised placement of fertilisers can potentially improve sustainable P management in agriculture. However, knowledge about root and plant P uptake responses to placement of complex waste-derived fertilisers is lacking. Methods: Sewage sludge (SS) and sewage sludge ash (ASH) were tested against triple superphosphate (TSP) in a rhizobox setup where maize shoot and root growth and architecture were followed for 30 days. Organic farms without or with a too low animal livestock try to replace farmyard manure by using plant based organic fertilizers, e.g. legume biomass as green meal or grain meal. When applying such fertilizers, it is necessary to know their nitrogen mineralisation intensity in relation to farmyard manure. In an incubation test over three weeks (25 °C, 45% maximum water holding capacity) alfalfa meal showed a lower and faba bean meal a much higher nitrate N mineralisation than farmyard manure (15 and 69 ug g-1 dry matter, respectively, compared to 25).The largest amount was released from castor meal (99 ug g-1). After one week farmyard manure had the largest N release with 28 ug g-1.
