Microbioal assessment of el-max farm OceanDocs
Elsersy, N.A.; Abo-Ella, G.M.; El-Shenawy, M.; Abdel-Mawla, E..
El-Max fish farm is one of the most important natural fish farm in Alexandria which is suffering from die-off of large amounts of fish. Facing this problem we must deal with the estimation of the quality of the farm raring unit environment (ponds). Analysis of samples using the Bray - Curtis similarity coefficient test yielded that, the input and El-Khandac were similar at (97%), while the eight ponds were classified at different level of similarity as follows: pond1 (B1) and pond7 (B7) were similar at (86%), B2 and B3 were similar at (90%), B14, B10 and B9 were similar at (93%), where as B11 is singly separated at (83%). Moreover, results indicate that distribution of the different bacterial groups was affected with one or more chemical parameters such as...

The Effects of E. Coli 0157:H7, FMD and BSE on Japanese Retail Beef Prices: A Historical Decomposition AgEcon
Saghaian, Sayed H.; Maynard, Leigh J.; Reed, Michael R..
This study examines the time-varying Japanese price reactions to the 2001 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) discovery, the 2000 outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD), and the 1996 E. coli food po isoning events. Historical decomposition of retail-level price-series aids in explaining the behavior of beef prices in a neighborhood (period-by-period time interval) of the three events. This is based on an application of directed acyclic graphs, constructing orthogonal innovations to determine causal patterns behind contemporaneous innovations. The results show the beef safety events had different negative impacts on Japanese retail beef prices, suggesting that consumers understood and differentiated among the health risks. The results provide...

USING BEST WORST SCALING TO INVESTIGATE PERCEPTIONS OF CONTROL & CONCERN OVER FOOD AND NON-FOOD RISKS AgEcon
Erdem, Seda; Rigby, Dan.
This research locates a series of risks or hazards within a framework characterised by the level of control respondents believe they have over the risks, and the level of worry the risks prompt. It does this for a set of both food and non-food risks. The means by which this is done is novel, and differs from past risk perception analyses in that it questions people directly regarding their relative assessments of the levels of control and worry over the risks presented. The cognitive burden associated with people ranking and scaling items in large sets is notoriously heavy, so this study uses an elicitation method designed to make the process intuitive and cognitively manageable for respondents. The substantive analysis of the risk perceptions has four...

Effects of E. Coli Infection on the Expressions of TGF-β/Smads Signaling Pathway in Broiler Intestine Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Juang,J; Yin,H; Zhang,C; Wang,J.
ABSTRACT This experiment aimed to investigate whether Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection could affect the TGF-β/smads signaling pathway in the jejunal tissue of chickens. One-day-old Cobb 500 broilers were randomly divided into 2 groups and treated with intraperitoneal E. coli or broth injection. Clinical signs of the birds were assessed every day. Spleen and bursa of Fabricius of the birds, post-infection (pi), were collected to evaluate immune organ index. Jejunal tissues were collected to ascertain the expression of TGF-βs, TβRs, and Smads. The results showed that the infected birds had significantly higher index of the spleen (24hrs and 48hrs pi) compared with birds in the control group (p<0.05). The relative gene expression of TGF-β4 increased...

Disinfection of a farmstead roof harvested rainwater for potable purposes using an automated solar photocatalytic reactor. CIGR Journal
Nwoke, Okala Okala; Ezema, Ifeanyichukwu Fabian; Chigor, Vincent Nnamdigadi; Anoliefo, Edward Chukwud; Mbajiorgu, Constantine Crowner.
Access to safe and reliable water supply is a challenge in many parts of the developing world. The use of roof harvested rainwater for domestic and potable purposes is common in households and farmsteads in the rainforest and some parts of savannah ecological zones of  Nigeria in spite of  the health risk associated with ingestion of water from an unimproved source such as untreated roof harvested rainwater. Solar photocatalysis has been proven to be effective in water treatment devoid of the short comings of high fuel cost and formation of carcinogens associated with conventional households water disinfection methods such as boiling and the use of chemicals.  In this study, an automated photocatalytic batch reactor which uses solar radiation as its photon...

The subsidiary GntII system for gluconate metabolism in Escherichia coli: Alternative induction of the gntV gene Biol. Res.
Gómez,Keyla M; Rodríguez,Andrea; Rodriguez,Yesseima; Ramírez,Alvaro H; Istúriz,Tomás.
Two systems are involved in the transport and phosphorylation of gluconate in Escherichia coli. GntI, the main system, consists of high and low-affinity gluconate transporters and a thermoresistant gluconokinase for its phosphorylation. The corresponding genes, gntT, gntU and gntK at 76.5 min, are induced by gluconate. GntII, the subsidiary system, includes IdnT and GntV, which duplicate activities of transport and phosphorylation of gluconate, respectively. Gene gntV at 96.8 min is divergently transcribed from the idnDOTR operon involved in L-idonate metabolism. These genetic elements are induced by the substrate or 5-keto-D-gluconate. Because gntV is also induced in cells grown in gluconate, it was of interest to investigate its expression in this...

Coexpression of rumen fungal xylanase and bifunctional cellulase genes in Escherichia coli BABT
Comlekcioglu,Ugur; Gunes,Merva; Altun,Hanifi; Ekiz,Dilek Ozgun; Aygan,Ashabil.
ABSTRACT Rumen fungi inhabit the gastro-intestinal tract of ruminants and the most non-ruminant herbivores. Rumen fungi produce highly active plant cell wall degrading enzymes, therefore they have gained scientific interest. In this study, genes encoding xylanase (xynA-7) and cellulase (celA-5) were amplified from Neocallimastix sp. GMLF7 and Orpinomyces sp. GMLF5, respectively, and expressed in Escherichia coli. XynA-7 was found to be active only on xylan, however CelA-5 had activity both on carboxymethyl cellulose and lichenan. Lichenase activity of CelA-5 was found to be higher than carboxymethyl cellulase activity. The optimal conditions were at pH 6.0 and 40 °C for CelA-5 and at pH 6.5 and 50 °C for XynA-7. A coexpression vector was constructed to...

Relationship among Shigella spp. and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) and their differentiation BJM
Ud-Din,Abu; Wahid,Syeda.
Shigellosis produces inflammatory reactions and ulceration on the intestinal epithelium followed by bloody or mucoid diarrhea. It is caused by enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) as well as any species of the genus Shigella, namely, S. dysenteriae, S. flexneri, S. boydii, and S. sonnei. This current species designation of Shigella does not specify genetic similarity. Shigella spp. could be easily differentiated from E. coli, but difficulties observed for the EIEC-Shigella differentiation as both show similar biochemical traits and can cause dysentery using the same mode of invasion. Sequencing of multiple housekeeping genes indicates that Shigella has derived on several different occasions via acquisition of the transferable forms of ancestral virulence plasmids...
