Coastal resources and management systems influenced by conflict and migration: Mecúfi, Mozambique OceanDocs
Bryceson, I.; Massinga, A..
Coastal resource utilization and management systems, bothtraditional and more recently conceived, were studied in Mecufidistrict, northern Mozambique in a post-conflict situation prior towhich a significant migration of people to the coast had occurred.A wide variety of coastal biotopes containing a multitude ofresources had been affected in various ways. Intertidalorganisms exhibited signs of decreasing abundance and averagesize, whereas offshore fishes and mangrove forests did not showsigns of overutilization. It was observed that traditional coastalmanagement systems were still influential, but that newerinitiatives were only beginning to enter into significant dialogueand cooperation with these. In the current circumstances ofpeace and political...

The ecological quality ofthe Scheldt has been strongly affected by deepening, reclaiming and polluting the water of the river. The use of national instruments of protection has unsufficiently contributed to the recovery of the estuarium. Field managers of nature-areas have succesfully taken the negative effects of the other functions as starting point into their management. The program for compensation of lost nature on behalf of the recent deepening will be evaluated next year, and adapted if necessary. The European directives for nature, water and fishery become more and more important. They play a big role in the long term vision for the Scheldt-estuarium.

An Emergent Economics of Ecosystem Management AgEcon
Hearnshaw, Edward J.S.; Cullen, Ross; Hughey, Kenneth F.D..
Economics is an evolving and emerging field of study, so is the management of ecosystems. As such, this paper delineates the co-evolution of economic evaluation that reflects the various recognized ecosystem management approaches of anticipative, adaptive and capacitive ecosystem management. Each management approach is critiqued and from this theoretical analysis an emergent approach for the management of ecosystem is put forward, which accordingly suggests an alternative methodological approach for economic evaluations.

SUSTAINABILITY ISSUES: HOW SHOULD GOVERNMENT COORDINATE FARM REGULATIONS AND POLICY? AgEcon
Johnson, Larry A..
Agricultural sustainability is an evolving process ever-seeking a balance between society's economic, environmental and social demands. Governmental policy and regulations while attempting to correct adverse externalities, have at times within themselves created adverse externalities. Failures often lie within the policies themselves, but poor coordination among government agencies is also at fault. This paper outlines a number of coordination issues and attempts to show how the empowerment of communities through ecosystem management is a partial solution to environmental degradation.

Ecosystem Services on New Zealand Arable Farms AgEcon
Cullen, Ross; Takatsuka, Yuki; Wilson, Matthew; Wratten, Steve D..
Researchers have estimated the total economic value of global ecosystem goods and services showing that a significant portion of humanity's economic well being is unaccounted for in conventional GNP accounting (Constanza et al., 1997). To demonstrate this point, authors have conventionally used highly aggregated landscape units for analysis (e.g., biomes), and average, not marginal values, of each ecosystem good or service are estimated for each unit using value transfer methodologies (Wilson et al., 2004). For example, Patterson and Cole (1999a, b) replicated the Constanza et al., (1997) approach by estimating economic values for Waikato and New Zealand ecosystem goods and services associated with standard land cover classes including horticulture,...

ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT AND THE FLORIDA EVERLADES: THE ROLE OF SOCIAL SCIENTISTS AgEcon
Milon, J. Walter; Kiker, Clyde F.; Lee, Donna J..
Recently many state and federal agencies in the U.S. have embraced an ecosystems management approach to environmental protection and regulation. This approach requires a high degree of cooperation between natural and social scientists to translate policy objectives into research hypotheses, models, and evaluation procedures to guide implementation decisions. An adaptive procedure to guide interdisciplinary research is described and illustrated with highlights of recent progress and pitfalls from the restoration initiative for the Everglades/South Florida ecosystem.

Ecological theory and values in the determination of conservation goals: examples from temperate regions of Germany, United States of America, and Chile RChHN
Jax,Kurt; Rozzi,Ricardo.
The definition of conservation goals is a complex task, which involves both ecological sciences and social values. A brief history of conservation strategies in Germany (protection of cultural landscapes), United States (wilderness ideal), and southern Chile (preservation paradigm and the more recent interest in ecotourism) illustrates a broad range of conservation goals. To encompass such an array of conservation dimensions and goals, the ecosystem approach adopted by the Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity represents a good approach. However, to become effective, this kind of approach requires clarifying and agreeing upon basic concepts, such as ecosystem. To serve that purpose, we present a scheme that considers the...

Dissolved organic carbon and bioavailability of N and P as indicators of soil quality Scientia Agricola
Silveira,Maria Lucia Azevedo.
Soil quality has become an important issue in soil science. Considerable attempts have been made to define soil quality, but a general concept has not yet been accepted by the scientific community. The selection of quantitative indices for soil quality is extremely difficult, and a considerable number of chemical, physical, and biochemical properties have been suggested as potential indicators of soil quality. Because soil organic matter (SOM) can be associated with different soil chemical, physical and biological processes, it has been widely considered as one of the best soil quality indicator. Land use can significantly influence dynamics of organic carbon and N, P, and S cycle. However, changes in total soil organic carbon (SOC) contents in response to...

Invasion impact by Pteridium arachnoideum (Kaulf.) Maxon (Dennstaedtiaceae) on a neotropical savanna Acta Botanica
Guerin,Natalia; Durigan,Giselda.
Whether management intervention is required to control biological invasions depends primarily on demonstrating species losses resulting from such invasions. Brackens of the Pteridium genus are currently regarded as a problem species that act as important ecological filters in the assembly of invaded communities. We investigated the effects of Pteridium arachnoideum invasion on the diversity, structure, floristic composition, and functional traits of cerradão in Assis, São Paulo, Brazil. We compared an invaded site with an adjacent non-invaded site. Bracken constrained the establishment of tree species, resulting in a community structure remarkably distinct from the non-invaded area. The density and basal area of the arboreal community were higher in...

Sustainability or Colonialism? Legislative obstacles to research and development of natural products and patents on traditional knowledge in Brazil Acta Botanica
Pedrollo,Camilo Tomazini; Kinupp,Valdely Ferreira.
ABSTRACTHistorically, developed countries have benefited from the biodiversity and traditional knowledge of developing countries. Since the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was approved, the world-view regarding access to biological resources has changed. This change marked the introduction of legal agreements regarding access to genetic resources, traditional knowledge and benefit sharing, seeking a fair return for owners and local communities. Unfortunately, as with most national laws, these legal devices complicated collection programs and research initiatives, and diminished the emphasis on the discovery of natural products. There remains a lack of discussion on the establishment of a fair international market value for the access to genetic...

Ecological niche modeling of Schinus molle reveals the risk of invasive species expansion into biodiversity hotspots Anais da ABC (AABC)
LEMOS,RAFAEL P.M.; MATIELO,CRISTIANE B.D.; MARQUES JR.,ALCEMIR S.; SANTOS,MICHELE G. DOS; ROSA,VANESSA G. DA; SARZI,DEISE S.; ROSA,JOÃO VITOR S..; STEFENON,VALDIR M..
Abstract: Invasive species need a closer look on the threats they may cause to the environment, mainly considering the scenario of climatic changes predicted for the next decades. Schinus molle is a pioneer tree native from South America, reported as an important invasive species in four continents. Using ecological niche modeling we show that a wide area over the world is propitious for S. molle establishment under current climatic conditions, including 14 of the 25 world’s biodiversity hotspots. Current projections of climate changes suggest scenarios implying the rise of areas favorable for S. molle expansion. Therefore, particular attention should be taken in regions where it was introduced, while approaches for long-term intervention may be necessary...
