The variability of the phytoplankton biomass derived from daily chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) satellite images was investigated over the period 1998–2017 in the surface waters of the English Channel and the northern Bay of Biscay. Merged satellite (SeaWiFS-MODIS/Aqua-MERIS-VIIRS) Chl-a was calculated using the OC5 Ifremer algorithm which is optimized for moderately-turbid waters. The seasonal cycle in satellite-derived Chl-a was compared with in situ measurements made at seven coastal stations located in the southern side of the English Channel and in the northern Bay of Biscay. The results firstly showed that the satellite Chl-a product, derived from a suite of space-borne marine reflectance data, is in agreement with the coastal observations. For compliance with...

A Bayesian two-stage biomass model for stock assessment of data-limited species: An application to cuttlefish ( Sepia officinalis ) in the English Channel ArchiMer
Alemany, Juliette; Rivot, Etienne; Foucher, Eric; Vigneau, Joel; Robin, Jean-paul.
Cuttlefish is a key commercial species in the English Channel fishery in terms of landings and value. Age-based assessment methods are limited by time-consuming age determination with statoliths and the lack of stock assessment models tailored to this data-limited species. A two-stage biomass model is developed in the Bayesian state-space modelling framework that allows inferences to be made on the stock biomass at the start, middle and end of each fishing seasons between 1992 and 2014, while accounting for both process and measurement errors and to assimilate various sources of information. A method that uses ancillary length-frequency data is developed to provide an informative prior distribution for the biomass growth rate parameter g (E = 0.89) and its...

Dynamique spatiale et interannuelle des communautés mésozooplanctoniques en Manche Orientale en lien avec l’introduction récente d’une espèce non-indigène : Mnemiopsis leidyi ArchiMer
Gravier, Nathan.
In the seas of southern Europe, Mnemiopsis leidyi is responsible for invasive events with worrying ecological consequences. Since 2005, this native of the east coast of the Americas is regularly observed in the English Channel in the Bay of Seine. In order to find out whether changes have taken place in the distribution of M. leidyi in the English Channel since the first reports made before 2014 and to identify the environmental conditions favourable to his presence, hydrological data and Channel Ground Fish Survey from 2014 to 2015 were analyzed. This confirmed that M. leidyi is well established in the Bay of Seine (naturalized species) but does not extend outside this area and therefore cannot be considered an invasive species for that region. The...

Modelling larval dispersal of the king scallop (Pecten maximus) in the English Channel: examples from the bay of Saint-Brieuc and the bay of Seine ArchiMer
Nicolle, Amandine; Dumas, Franck; Foveau, Aurelie; Foucher, Eric; Thiebaut, Eric.
The king scallop (Pecten maximus) is one of the most important benthic species of the English Channel as it constitutes the first fishery in terms of landings in this area. To support strategies of spatial fishery management, we develop a high-resolution biophysical model to study scallop dispersal in two bays along the French coasts of the English Channel (i.e. the bay of Saint-Brieuc and the bay of Seine) and to quantify the relative roles of local hydrodynamic processes, temperature-dependent planktonic larval duration (PLD) and active swimming behaviour (SB). The two bays are chosen for three reasons: (1) the distribution of the scallop stocks in these areas is well known from annual scallop stock surveys, (2) these two bays harbour important fisheries...

The first estimation of Fleuve Manche palaeoriver discharge during the last deglaciation: Evidence for Fennoscandian ice sheet meltwater flow in the English Channel ca 20-18 ka ago ArchiMer

The Fleuve Manche (English Channel) palaeoriver represents the largest river system that drained the European continent during Pleistocene lowstands, particularly during the Elsterian (Marine Isotope Stage 12) and Saalian Drenthe (MIS 6) glaciations when extensive ice advances into the North Sea area forced the central European rivers to flow southwards to the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic). Numerous long piston cores and high-resolution acoustic data from the northern Bay of Biscay have been correlated using a well-constrained chronostratigraphical framework, and for the first time allow the estimation of the discharge of the Fleuve Manche palaeoriver at the end of the last glacial period (i.e. Weichselian). Our results, discussed in the light of...

Three cruises on the Wight-Cherbourg transect were undertaken during the FluxManche II Programme in order to study the origin, nature and behaviour of organic matter inputs to the waters of the English Channel. Suspended particulate material (SPM) collected from surface and deep waters at each station was analysed at elemental level for Particulate Organic Carbon and Particulate Organic Nitrogen (POC, PON), at molecular level for main classes of organic compounds using Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) and for phenolic compounds, particularly lignin-derived phenols, using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The SPM content increases from the French (south) to the English coast (north) with the lowest values...

Distribution et caractérisation par fluorescence de la matière organique dissoute dans les eaux de la Manche centrale ArchiMer
Ismaili, Mm; Belin, Colette; Lamotte, M; Texier, H.
Intensity and spectral characteristics of the fluorescence of water samples collected along the transect Cherbourg-Isle of Wight during four cruises for excitations at 370, 313 and 270 nm have been investigated within the framework of the FluxManche II program. Seasonal and spatial differences appeared to reflect on the one hand, variations in terrestrial inputs, and on the other hand, waters masses structuring. The observed linear variation of the fluorescence intensity with salinity indicates a gradual dilution of the continental humic material in going from the coasts to the central part of the English Channel. The largest signal was observed for the English coastal waters in agreement with important terrestrial inputs from the Solent river. While the...

Update of the English Channel cuttlefish stock assessment with a Bayesian two-stage biomass model. ArchiMer
Alemany, Juliette; Rivot, Etienne; Foucher, Eric; Vigneau, Joel; Robin, Jean-paul.
A two-stage biomass model is developed in the Bayesian framework that allows us to assimilate various sources of information. A method that makes use of ancillary length frequency data is developed to provide an informative prior distribution for the intrinsic biomass growth rate parameter and its annual variability. The new Bayesian model provides substantial improvement to the existing stock assessment method used by ICES. Considering a time-varying g parameter improves model fit and improves the ecological realisms of the model according to the sensitivity of the cuttlefish population dynamics to environmental fluctuations. We present results of the English Channel cuttlefish stock assessment updated with the new Bayesian model. The model also provides...

- This study (granted up to 50% by the French Office for Water and Aquatic Environments ONEMA) aimed at determining by modelling (hydrodynamical/biogeochemical ECOMARS3D model) the marine "receiving basins" of the main tributaries to the French waters of the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. Knowing the respective part of each of these marine "receiving basins" in winter nutrient distribution, some optimal scenarios of nutrient loading reduction can be computed for nitrate or phosphate in order to bring back any marine water to the Good Ecological Status regarding eutrophication, at the best efficiency/cost ratio. - The study encompasses 45 watersheds (or clusters of neighboring watersheds) which have been retained because of their sizes and flow...

Suspended particulate matter fluxes through the Straits of Dover, English Channel: observations and modelling ArchiMer
Lafite, Robert; Shimwell, Susan; Grochowski, Nicolas; Dupont, Jacques; Nash, Linda; Salomon, Jean-claude; Cabioch, Louis; Collins, Michael; Gao, Shu.
Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentrations at various levels within the water column, together with salinity and temperature, were measured using water samples collected from six stations across the Straits of Dover. The sampling programme covered a 16-month period, undertaken during 23 cruises. On the basis of the spatial variability in the concentrations, the water bodies are divided by several boundaries, controlled by tidal and wind conditions. Within the water column, SPM concentrations were higher near the sea bed than in the surface waters. Throughout the cross-section, maximum concentrations occurred adjacent to the coastlines. Temporal variability in the SPM concentration exists on daily and seasonal scales within the coastal waters (4.2 to...

The role of hydrographic parameters, measured from a ship of opportunity, in bloom formation of Karenia mikimotoi in the English Channel ArchiMer
Hartman, S.e.; Hartman, M. C.; Hydes, D.j.; Smythe-wright, D.; Gohin, Francis; Lazure, Pascal.
Unusually high chlorophyll values (~ 14 mg chl m− 3 at 5 m depth), recorded on a ship of opportunity (SOO) in July 2010, indicated the occurrence of a potential Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) in the Western approaches of the English Channel. This bloom, located at 49.7°N, 3.2°W was observed via complementary datasets. These included data from samples collected for microscopic phytoplankton identification, information from satellite maps to follow geographical bloom development and in situ data to identify hydrographic factors related to bloom initiation. The relationships between chlorophyll-fluorescence, temperature, salinity and wind speed were examined. The intense summer bloom predominantly consisted of the dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi and followed an...

Modelling larval dispersal of Pecten maximus in the English Channel: a tool for the spatial management of the stocks ArchiMer
Nicolle, Amandine; Moitie, Roderic; Ogor, Julien; Dumas, Franck; Foveau, Aurelie; Foucher, Eric; Thiebaut, Eric.
The great scallop Pecten maximus supports one of the most important and valuable commercial fisheries around the British Isles and in the northwest of France, but the resource is mainly managed at the scale of each local fishing ground through a combination of European, national and local measures. To analyse the larval dispersal pathways and connectivity patterns among fishing grounds of the great scallop in the Celtic Sea and the English Channel, a particle tracking model was developed. The model combined a 3D physical circulation model that simulated currents and temperature fields and a scallop larval submodel that took into account a temperature-dependent planktonic larval duration and an active vertical swimming behaviour. Due to the lack of stock...

Ecological and life history traits explain a climate induced shift in a temperate marine fish community ArchiMer
Mclean, Matthew; Mouillot, David; Auber, Arnaud.
A better understanding of community dynamics and ecosystem functioning can be achieved by describing how community functional structure responds to environmental change over both time and space and by identifying which functional groups best mediate community responses. Here, we used a trait-based approach in combination with a newly developed application of principal response curves to functionally characterize a rapid taxonomic shift in the eastern English Channel fish community in the late 1990s. We identified the functional groups with the greatest contributions to the overall shift in fish functional structure and uncovered significant trait−environment relationships. We found that pelagic species with rapid life history cycles, characterized by...
