Introduction in Europe, from 1972 to 1980, of the Japanese Manila clam (Tapes philippinarum) and the effects on aquaculture production and natural settlement ArchiMer
Flassch, Jean-pierre; Leborgne, Yves.
The Pacific Mani la clam (Tapes philippinamm) was introduccd in France be tween 1972 and 1975 by the SATMAR Corporation , and in England through the Conwy Laboratory in 1980. Initially. spat were introduced and later adults, both from the west coast of North America (Puget Sound area). Aquaculture production in France started from adults. Until 1975, experiments with the spat were conducted at half-industrial scale and research activities and plans to transfer the knowledge were set up. The breeding began at first on the French Atlantic coast in intertidal areas and at the same time in oyster ponds. Characteristics of the new cu lture are presented in th is paper. The diseases met wilh in larval production and growout are also discussed . Nalural...

Abarnou, Alain.
This activity report entitled (“Chemical contamination of the marine environment: from measurement to risk assessment”) summarizes the main stages my career at Ifremer from November 1975 to june 2013. The first chapter deals with the seawater chlorination and chlorinated waters released into the sea, the identification and the conditions of the formation of various by-product of these processes. The second chapter concerns PCBs, their nature, their chemical analysis in environmental matrices. PCBs are considered as the best examples of persistant and bioaccumulable compounds and therefore, in all this report they are flagship contaminants to which other groups of studied substances are compared. The third chapter refers to studies performed within marine...

Paquotte, Philippe.
Aquaculture is an economic activity which is characterised by a great dependence on environmental conditions. Therefore aquaculture development is subdued to institutional context which defines the rules for use and conservation of the environment. This paper analyses the impact of marine environment regulations on economic operating of aquaculture enterprises and on industrial dynamics. Because aquaculture enterprises use a collective good, an economic approach of aquaculture has to take into account not only the relations between enterprises and environment, but also the relations between the enterprises themselves, through production externalities. In this study, several economic tools are considered in order to incite enterprises to integrate pad of...

Kempf, Marc; Cadour, Gwenael; Jeanneret, Hélène; Mear, Yan; Miramand, Pierre; Merceron, Michel.
This document is a result of an environmental impact study carried out between 1993 and 1995 on the site of a marine trout culture located in the Harbour of Cherbourg, France. It deals with the solid waste of the farm and concems deposition rate, sediment analysis and chemistry (fine fraction < 63 ~m, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen, copper and zinc), bottom living organisms and underwater video monitoring. The impact observed is very moderate and localised. This is mainly due to the strong d)'TIamics and flushing rate of the site. A seperate volume of the same study deals with dissolved waste and concems the water mass (volume 1 : water and pelagos). (Not controlled OCR)

Scenarios of fish waste deposition at the sub-lagoon scale: a modelling approach for aquaculture zoning and site selection ArchiMer
Chary, Killian; Callier, Myriam; Coves, Denis; Aubin, Joel; Simon, Julien; Fiandrino, Annie.
Spatial planning, including zoning and site-selection steps, is necessary to determine locations that minimize environmental impacts of aquaculture and respect ecosystem carrying capacities. This study aimed to analyse potential benthic waste deposition in a broad range of fish farming situations to facilitate zoning. To this end, we simulated waste dispersion for 54 aquaculture scenarios combining three red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) farm types (Small, Medium, and Large) based on real farm characteristics and 36 sites with contrasting hydrodynamics in Mayotte’s North-East Lagoon. Key forcing variables and parameters of the particle-dispersion model for farms (layout and solid waste fluxes), species (feed- and faeces-settling velocities) and sites (depth...

Chauvin, P; Freger, G; Guyader, Julie.
Le Havre Harbour dredging wastes are deposited off Octeville and cause the spreading of muds in this area. Currents disperse the sediments on a large zone. Physico-chemical analysis show low micropolluants concentrations. Water quality seems not to be affected by these deposits, but a reduction of species living in the sediments is observed.

The objective of GHYDRO, a France Energies Marines project, is to draw up a methodology guide that provide stakeholders in tidal stream energy projects with decision-making help for the environmental integration of generators and tidal farms. The methodological guide currently represents a summary of the recommendations concerning the diverse physical parameters and biological compartments of the ecosystems that are potentially affected. The physical and biological compartments of the marine ecosystems have been addressed separately in the guide, in order to propose methodologies adapted to each one, in relation to the establishment of the initial state, the characterisation of the potential impacts and the environmental monitoring. To bring together the...

Imidacloprid impact on arthropods associated with canopy of common beans Neotropical Entomology
Marquini,Flávio; Picanço,Marcelo C.; Guedes,Raul N.C.; Ferreira,Paulo S.F..
The present work aimed at assessing the temporal and spatial effect of applying the insecticide imidacloprid on the arthropod community associated with the canopy of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris). About 2 ha of bean field was divided into two adjacent fields subjected to the same crop management practices except for insecticide application. Imidacloprid 700 GrDA (147 g a.i./ha) was applied to 20-day old plants. Three transects were extended from the mid-part of the sprayed area to the mid-part of the non-sprayed area. Nine sampling points 10 m apart were established in each transect. Arthropods were sampled from the plant canopy before and 3, 8, 14, 22, 29 37 and 44 days after insecticide application. There was a strong temporal effect of the...

Diet and trophic structure of the fish assemblage in the mid-course of the Teles Pires River, Tapajós River basin, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Dary,Eurizângela P.; Ferreira,Efrem; Zuanon,Jansen; Röpke,Cristhiana P..
ABSTRACT This study was carried out in a section of the middle course of the Teles Pires River, a clear water river that drains ancient and highly eroded geological formations, and where five hydropower plants are planned or in construction. In this study we tested the hypothesis that local fish fauna is mainly sustained by autochthonous food resources, with modest changes in the trophic structure of fish assemblages along the hydrometric cycle. Sampling was performed every three months between July 2008 and May 2009 at seven sites distributed along a 50-km section of the river. Piscivores was the most representative group in terms of biomass, abundance and species richness, followed by herbivores, insectivores and omnivores. The trophic structure did not...

Upstream dam impacts on gilded catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) in the Bolivian Amazon Neotropical Ichthyology
Damme,Paul A. Van; Córdova-Clavijo,Leslie; Baigún,Claudio; Hauser,Marilia; Doria,Carolina R. da Costa; Duponchelle,Fabrice.
ABSTRACT This paper explores the effects of two run-of-river dams (Jirau and Santo Antônio) built in cascade in the middle Madeira River (Brazil) on the interruption of long-distance migration routes of the gilded catfish (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii). A participative monitoring system was set up to compare capture by commercial fishers approximately 1500 km upstream of the dams in Bolivia, before (1998-2007) and after (2015-2017) dam closure. A significant decrease in gilded catfish catches and in catch per unit effort was observed after dam closure, whereas no significant difference in mean weight was found. Back-estimation of age suggests that the few individuals remaining after dam closure in 2009 are a mixture of old homers that returned upstream...

Movement and longitudinal distribution of a migratory fish ( Salminus brasiliensis) in a small reservoir in southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
De Fries,Lucas; Hahn,Lisiane; Meneses,Bruna Arbo; Câmara,Luís Fernando da; Becker,Fernando Gertum; Hartz,Sandra Maria.
ABSTRACT We investigated whether the movement and distribution of the migratory fish, Salminus brasiliensis, were affected by a small reservoir. We also examined how movement and distribution were related to water temperature, flow, and rainfall. In December 2011 and January 2012, 24 individuals were captured downstream from the dam, tagged with radio transmitters and released in the reservoir (5.46 km² total area). After being released in the reservoir, 18 of the 24 tagged fish travelled upstream, taking an average of 16.6 days to leave the reservoir, with daily movements varying from < 5 km/day to > 24 km/day. However, only seven tagged specimens (29.16%) returned to the lower reservoir section, while the rest remained in the intermediate and upper...

Diet of Bryconops alburnoides and B. caudomaculatus (Osteichthyes: Characiformes) in the region affected by Balbina Hydroelectric Dam (Amazon drainage, Brazil) Neotropical Ichthyology
Silva,Cylene C. da; Ferreira,Efrem J. G.; Deus,Cláudia P. de.
The study of fish diet and its interaction with the environment provides important data on ecology and behavior, as fish face varying environmental and food availability conditions. The aim of the present study was to determine the diet of Bryconops caudomaculatus and Bryconops alburnoides, as well as to assess its seasonal variation, within the area influenced by Balbina Hydroelectric Dam (BHD), in the Uatumã River (Amazon Basin, Brazil). Collections were carried out every two months from April 2005 to February 2007, using gill nets with mesh sizes ranging from 12 to 60 mm between opposite knots. Two methods were used for determining diet: frequency of occurrence and relative volume, which were used to calculate the alimentary index (IAi). Diet similarity...
