Cadmium and mercury in Seine Estuary flounders and mussels: the results of two decades of monitoring ArchiMer
Nakhle, K; Cossa, Daniel; Claisse, Didier; Beliaeff, Benoit; Simon, S.
The flounder (Platichthys flesus) is a flatfish that inhabits marine coastal environments, especially estuaries. It is an alternative quantitative biological indicator to the common marine mussel (Mytilus spp.), which is currently used as a sentinel species to monitor chemical contamination in numerous monitoring programmes. Findings from two decades of monitoring cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) using both sentinel species in the Seine Estuary (France) are reported. For comparison, time-series of water concentrations for the same two metals at the mouth of the River Seine are given. Cd concentrations in the liver of the fish and in the soft tissue of mussels show similar temporal trends, consistent with the major temporal variations of Cd concentrations...

Acetylcholinesterase activity in copepods (Tigriopus brevicornis) from the Vilaine River estuary, France, as a biomarker of neurotoxic contaminants ArchiMer
Forget, Joelle; Beliaeff, Benoit; Bocquene, Gilles.
From April 1997 to June 1998, 14 measurements of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymatic activity were performed with the copepod, Tigriopus brevicornis, collected at five stations in the Vilaine River estuary (South Brittany, France). Simultaneously, four chemical analyses of triazines and one analysis of total pesticides in water were undertaken. AChE activity levels in T brevicornis were compared to the levels measured at a reference site not exposed to effluents from Vilaine River. Results reveal significant differences between AChE activity levels depending on location of stations in the plume of the river with an increasing gradient of activity from the upstream to the downstream stations, thus indicating that neurotoxic contaminants are mainly brought...

Biodegradation of [D-Leu1] microcystin-LR by a bacterium isolated from sediment of Patos Lagoon estuary, Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Lemes,Gilmar AF; Kist,Luiza W; Bogo,Mauricio R; Yunes,João S.
Background Toxic cyanobacterial blooms are recurrent in Patos Lagoon, in southern Brazil. Among cyanotoxins, [D-Leu1] microcystin-LR is the predominant variant whose natural cycle involves water and sediment compartments. This study aimed to identify and isolate from sediment a bacterial strain capable of growing on [D-Leu1] microcystin-LR. Sediment and water samples were collected at two distinct aquatic spots: close to the Oceanographic Museum (P1), in Rio Grande City, and on São Lourenço Beach (P2), in São Lourenço do Sul City, southern Brazil. Methods [D-Leu1] microcystin-LR was isolated and purified from batch cultures of Microcystis aeruginosastrain RST9501. Samples of water and sediment from Rio Grande and São Lourenço do Sul were collected....

Dry season distribution of hydroids in a small tropical estuary, Pernambuco, Brazil Naturalis
Calder, D.R.; Maÿal, E.M..
Hydroid distribution patterns along a horizontal ecocline in the Rio Formoso/Rio Ariquindá/Rio Porto Alegre system, a small and seasonally poikilohaline estuary on the tropical northeast coast of Brazil, were investigated. Collecting was undertaken during the dry season, in November 1993, by diving (with and without SCUBA). Nine stations were sampled on a transect extending from a reef outside the river mouth to a mangrove system at the upper end of the estuary. Four major regions were distinguished along the ecocline based on numerical analyses of hydroid species/station location data: (1) nearshore reef — a sandstone ledge outside the entrance of the estuary; (2) river mouth — a sandy and shelly flood-tidal delta area inside the entrance of the Rio...

Ecomorphology and resource use by dominant species of tropical estuarine juvenile fishes Neotropical Ichthyology
Pessanha,André Luiz Machado; Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Oliveira,Ronnie Enderson M. C. C.; Silva,Adna Ferreira da; Sales,Natalice Santos.
Eleven ecomorphological attributes and diet of seventeen juvenile fish species were examined to test the hypothesis that morphological patterns determine resource uses in estuarine habitats. Species were separated according to the apparatus to food capture and habitat use (benthic or pelagic) in three different groups: (1) a group with depressed fish body, strong caudal peduncle and enlarged pectoral fins; (2) a second group laterally flattened with a wide protruding mouth, and (3) a third group strongly flattened with small pectorals fins. The following six trophic groups were organized based on prey categories: Zooplanktivores, Benthivores, Omnivores, Detritivores, Macrocarnivores and Insectivores. Significant results (PERMANOVA) between ecomorphological...

Evidence of habitat fragmentation affecting fish movement between the Patos and Mirim coastal lagoons in southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Burns,Marcelo D. M.; Garcia,Alexandre M.; Vieira,João P.; Bemvenuti,Marlise A.; Marques,David M. L. Motta; Condini,Vinicius.
The communication between the Patos and Mirim lagoon systems occurs via a natural channel called São Gonçalo. In 1977, a dam was built in this channel to prevent entrance of saline waters from Patos Lagoon estuary into the Mirim Lagoon. Our results showed an abrupt discontinuity in salinity and fish species distribution along the study sites. Sites below the dam showed salinity values higher than zero, whereas sites above had zero salinity values across all sampling periods. Marine and estuarine fishes (e.g., mullets Mugil platanus, M. curema, silversides Odontesthes argentinensis, Atherinella brasiliensis, sardine Brevoortia pectinata, and white croaker Micropogonias furnieri) were not captured above the dam. If these juvenile fishes could enter the Mirim...

Abundance and diversity patterns of the sessile macrobenthic community associated with environmental gradients in Vitória Harbor, southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Zalmon,Ilana Rosental; Krohling,Werther; Ferreira,Carlos Eduardo Leite.
Harbor terminals and urban sewage effluents affect the composition and distribution of epibenthic organisms. In this study, we hypothesized that the benthic community structure at the Vitoria Harbor changes spatially in a ~3 km scale, and that these changes are associated with environmental gradients resulting from point-source sewage and differences in the physical and chemical parameters of the water along the harbor access channel. Four sites, internal (PI), intermediate-internal (PMI), intermediate-external (PME) and external (PE), varying from 0.5 to 4.0 km off the harbor, were sampled on five quadrats at six sampling dates (N = 30 per site). The epibenthic community on the shallow sublitoral rocky shore was sampled fortnightly from December 2005 to...

Gonadal development and sexuality of Larkinia grandis (Arcida: Arcidae) inhabiting southeastern Gulf of California Rev. Bras. Zool.
Sotelo-Gonzalez,Maria I.; García-Ulloa,Manuel; Góngora-Gómez,Andrés M.; Salcido-Guevara,Luis A.; Arzola-González,Juan F.; Sepúlveda,Carlos H.; Sánchez-Cárdenas,Rebeca.
ABSTRACT Larkinia grandis (Broderip & G.B. Sowerby I, 1829), an important fishing resource for Mexican communities, is an Arcidae clam. It is also considered a species with aquaculture potential. In this work we investigated the gonadal phases and sexuality in a population of L. grandis in the Gulf of California. Our findings support the hypothesis that there is one male per female in the population studied. It also documents that the shape, position and color of the gonads of L. grandis are consistent with observations in other Arcidae species. Additionally, five gonadal phases are differentiated and described in males and females (development, mature, spawning, post-spawning and resting), with a noticeable presence of brown cells during post-spawning...

First record of the invasive medusa Blackfordia virginica (Hydrozoa: Leptomedusae) in the Río de la Plata estuary, Argentina-Uruguay RChHN
GENZANO,GABRIEL; MIANZAN,HERMES; ACHA,EDUARDO M; GAITÁN,ESTEBAN.
Blackfordia virginica is a well-known invasive medusa inhabiting estuarine areas. It was recently detected in northern Argentina, constituting the first record of invasive hydromedusa for the Argentine Sea. In this work more than 1,500 plankton samples in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean (34-55º S) from 1983 to 2000 were analyzed. More than 5,000 specimens per sample of B. virginica were found in Río de la Plata estuary for the first time in February 2000. This river is one of the large waterways of South America with an intense nautical traffic and several exotic species has been recorded here, mainly due to trans-oceanic shipping traffic. It is important to point out that we found medusae of both sexes (therefore this species could be introduced in either...

Aspectos da alimentação de Genidens genidens (Valenciennes) (Siluriformes, Ariidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha; Vendei,Ana Lúcia.
Seasonal variation of the food items of the "bagre-urutu", Genidens genidens is analysed based on monthly samples between September, 1993 and April, 1995 at the Guaratuba Bay, coast of Paraná. The stomach contents of 105 fish is analysed by the Occurrence Frequency Method and 41 of these have also been analysed by the Volumetric Method. Matching both methods using the Preponderance índices, a larger incidence of decapods is determined, followed by other crustaceans, molluscs, polychaets, fish, and plant material. The data show the existence of a strong seasonal variation in the diet.

Diet of the chola guitarfish, Rhinobatos percellens (Rhinobatidae), in the Paranaguá Estuarine complex Anais da ABC (AABC)
Carmo,Wanessa P.D. do; Bornatowski,Hugo; Oliveira,Elton C.; Fávaro,Luís L..
The chola guitarfish, Rhinobatos percellens, is one of the most-captured batoids on the Brazilian coast, and an important predator of benthic community. Stomachs from R. percellens were sampled in the Paranaguá estuarine complex (March/2006 to March/2007 and October/2008 to September/2009). The stomachs obtained were used for describing the diet of R. percellens, and verifying if there are seasonal and ontogenetic differences in their feeding into the estuarine area. The general analysis showed a specialized diet with a predominance of three species in food contents: Leptochela serratorbita, Caridea remains and Ogyrides alphaerostris. Ontogenetic and seasonal analysis did not reveal significant differences in the food consumption. These data reveal that R....

Hydrodynamic Aspects at Vitória Bay Mouth, ES Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARONCE,FLÁVIA A.A.; QUARESMA,VALÉRIA S..
Understading the hydrodynamic behavior and suspended particulated matter (SPM) transport are of great importance in port regions such as Vitória Harbor, which is located at Vitória Bay, Vitória – ES, Brazil. Vitória Bay is an estuary that has not been systematically assessed through a temporal analysis in order to identify its hydrodynamics characteristics and SPM exchange. This study aims to investigate salt and suspended particulate matter flux at the estuarine mouth of Vitória Bay by understanding the temporal variation of salinity, temperature and tidal currents within the water column and at the channel crosssection. Results showed that the estuarine mouth tended to present partial stratification periods during neap tides and little stratification in...

We investigated the influence of environmental factors in spatial and temporal distribution of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri in Santos Bay and São Vicente Estuary, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Monthly samples were obtained, from May 2008 through April 2010, from four locations in the estuary and four in the bay. No individual was collected in the estuary and this was attributed to the low salinity means recorded in this environment. We collected 109,153 individuals in the bay and there was no difference in abundance between the two years comprised by the study period. The similarity in spatial distribution can be related to sediment grain size that in all sampling locations showed great amount of very fine sand. The largest amount of reproductive...
