Explaining Finnish Farmers' Policy Responses with Environmental Attitudes AgEcon
Arovuori, Kyösti.
In general, farmers are often found to be resistant to environmentally targeted agricultural policies. On the other hand, a part of farmers are clearly self-motivated to undertake farm practices that are beneficial to the environment and resource conservation. What motivates these farmers to participate? How much of this participation can be explained with attitudes, and where these attitudes arise from? In this paper, we analyze the effect of farmers‟ attitudes towards environmental policies and related issues on their farm level policy choice. The policy response analyzed is farmers‟ choice to implement voluntary contract-based special measures in the current agri-environmental support scheme. Our results show that farmers fall into different groups in...

On Farm Conservation of Rice Biodiversity in Nepal: A Simultaneous Estimation Approach AgEcon
Gauchan, Devendra; Van Dusen, M. Eric; Smale, Melinda.
This paper presents an empirical case study about farmer management of rice genetic resources in two communities of Nepal, drawing on interdisciplinary, participatory research that involved farmers, rice geneticists, and social scientists. The decision-making process of farm households is modelled and estimated in order to provide information for the design of community-based conservation programs. A bivariate model with sample selection treats the simultaneous process of whether farmers decide to plant landraces or modern varieties, and whether the landraces they choose to plant constitute genetic diversity of interest for future crop improvement. Findings show that the two landrace choices are affected by different social and economic factors. The...

A BEHAVIORAL APPROACH TOWARDS FUTURES CONTRACT USAGE. AgEcon
Pennings, Joost M.E.; Leuthold, Raymond M..
We propose a behavioral decision-making model to investigate what factors, observable as well as unobservable, owner-managers consider regarding futures contract usage. The conceptual model consists of two phases, reflecting the two-stage decision structure of manager’s use of futures. In the first phase owner-managers consider whether futures are within the market choice set for the enterprise. In the second phase the owner-manager decides whether or not to initiate a futures position when confronted with a concrete choice situation. In both phases owner-manager’s beliefs and perceptions play an important role. The proposed model is tested on a data set of Dutch farmers, based on computer-assisted personal interviews. Because we incorporate latent...

Wastelands Afforestation in Northern India by Cooperatives: A Socio-Economic Evaluation AgEcon
Kareemulla, Kalakada; Samra, J.S.; Rizvi, R.H.; Munnaram.
India has an estimated area of 129 million ha of wasteland, which can be used for providing sustainable livelihood for millions of rural unemployed. An evaluation of enhancing income and employment generation and environmental externalities due to plantations on wastelands through cooperatives and self-help groups was done. The development process was set up in leased degraded lands in three north Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The capacity building processes like savings and micro-enterprise skills empowered resource-poor farmers. An internal rate of return of 11.5 to 17.0 % in the phase I of the project imply tangible economic benefits at the end of 17 years, which improved to 13.9 to 20.4 % by including environmental...

Agricultural Decision Analysis: The Causal Challenge AgEcon
Parton, Kevin A..
The paper sets out the agenda for reviewing models of decision making in the context of farmers’ use of seasonal climate forecasting. Such forecasts have been framed in terms of shifts in cumulative distribution functions of yields or gross margins. Typically they have been applied to choices about crop variety, crop type, time of planting or level of fertiliser application. Fundamental questions are: how do farmers conceptualise and make use of the information contained in seasonal climate forecasts? Do our models of decision making represent well the way in which these decisions are made?

Analysis of Farm Household Preferences in the Management of Invasive Species: The Case of Miconia in Hawaii AgEcon
Chan-Halbrendt, Catherine; Yang, Fang; Thomas, Lynna; Pant, Archana.
A major threat to Hawaii's ecosystem is the spread of invasive plant species. One such species is Miconia calvescens. Given that this plant was originally introduced to Hawaii by the horticulture industry and has negative effects on agricultural productivity, it is logical to find the farm households' preference for the control of Miconia. Using Conjoint Choice Experiment methodology, this study designed a survey to measure farm households' preferences for Miconia calvescens control program attributes. Results of the surveys indicate that the farm households are willing to support Miconia control programs if they prevent severe soil erosion and loss of biodiversity.

Can supply chain's coordination mechanisms include small holders? Insight from an empirical work in Costa Rica. AgEcon
Faure, Guy; D'Hotel, Elodie Maitre; le Coq, Jean-Francois; Saenz, Fernando.
Small holders' agriculture is currently facing new stakes due to State's withdrawal from agricultural support and to higher market requests for producing agricultural products. Different coordination mechanisms can be observed inside the supply chains involving farmers, farmers' organizations, and others stakeholders. They depend on the nature of the product, the characteristics of the stakeholders involved, the technical specifications related to the transactions, and the institutional environment. Relying on a comparative case study methodology, the paper analyzes the consequences of different coordination mechanisms on inclusion or exclusion of small farmers in the northern region of Costa Rica. Market coordination could be an efficient way to integrate...

Empirical Analysis on Fixed Assets Investment and Income of Rural Household AgEcon
Zhang, Lin.
The related literatures were reviewed. According to the data in 1984-2005, the long-run equilibrium relation and causality of household income and fixed assets investment in China were studied empirically. The results showed that the restrictions of income growth on fixed assets investment of household were serious, but fixed assets investment was not the cause of household income growth. Finally, some policy proposals were put forward.

Banana Supply Chains in Indonesia and Australia: Surviving Isolation from End markets AgEcon
Singgih, Shinta; Woods, Elizabeth.
Two banana supply chains (BSC), one in Indonesia (BSC1) and one in Australia (BSC2), are described based on case study research conducted in 2002. BSC1 sources bananas from small farmers for distribution through traditional markets in Jakarta. BSC2 includes farmers supplying to both major and independent retailers in Sydney through a wholesale agency with some farmer ownership. Farmers in both chains live in relative isolation from the main markets for their bananas. Prices for their bananas depend on the market prices in the city, upon which they have little control. This paper focuses on how farmers removed from key markets, deal with buyers to receive fair prices. In both chains, most transactions between farmers and their buyers were completed through...

Innovation behaviour at micro level - selection and identification AgEcon
Sauer, Johannes; Zilberman, David.
Using a sequential logit model and a mixed-effects logistic regression approach this empirical study investigates factors for the adoption of automatic milking technology (AMS) at the farm level accounting for problems of sequential sample selection and behaviour identification. The results suggest the importance of the farmer’s risk perception, significant effects of peer-group behaviour, and a positive impact of previous innovation experiences.

Risk Management Strategies by Australian Farmers AgEcon
Nguyen, Nam C.; Wegener, Malcolm K.; Russell, Iean W.; Cameron, Donald; Coventry, David; Cooper, Ian M..
Australian farmers operate in one of the most risky environment in the world. They have to cope with various sources of risk in their businesses. This paper reports results of two case studies undertaken to examine the issues of farming risks and risk management strategies in Australia. The first case study found that climate variability, financial risk, marketing risk, and personal risk were regarded as the major sources of farming risk in the Upper Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. The main management strategies used by farmers included diversifying varieties, minimising tillage, minimising area of risky crops and maximising area of the least-risky crop, having high equity, having farm management deposits and other off-farm investments, and "leaving...

The Risk Attitudes of U.S. Farmers: Comparisons to the General Population and Business Owners AgEcon
Roe, Brian E..
I compare the risk attitudes of a large, representative sample of farmers to representative samples of the general population and of non-farm small business owners using a robust survey measure of risk tolerance. I find no difference between farmers and the general population in average risk tolerance while small business owners are significantly more risk tolerant than farmers. If farmers shared the same demographic profile as the general population, farmers would be significantly more risk tolerant while if farmers shared the profile of nonfarm business owners they would have similar risk tolerance.
