The appearance, ossification and growth of cartilaginous structures of the mouth in early larval stages of laboratory reared red porgy Pagrus pagrus, were examined. At the time of mouth opening, red porgy larvae are equipped with the fundamental components of the oral cavity to allow the sucking motion for acquiring food. During the initial feeding stage, from day 5 after hatching (AH) to day 7 AH, the hyoid and lower branchial archs were completed, and the head length and other structural elements, like the ceratohyal-epihyal cartilage, increased rapidly. These events intensified sucking mechanisms by increasing the amount of ingested rotifers. After day 13 AH, the presence of the bony premaxilla and angular, the ossification of the Meckels cartilage and... |

There is a global trend towards intensification of aquaculture-based systems, however a large portion of world production from aquaculture is still in small-scale "rural type" and extensive systems. The term “rural aquaculture” has been used to distinguish, from other production systems, the culture of aquatic organisms by families through extensive or semiintensive systems, for home consumption or partial marketing. Studies conducted in various regions of Mexico suggested that rural aquaculture of tilapia could be an alternative activity, able to dampen the demand and reduce pressure on natural resources. This paper analyzes the culture of tilapia considering the minimum management, with low fish density and low water exchange with the intention to... |

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for fish culture have been used for more than three decades. The interest in RAS is due to their have advantages such as greatly reduced land and water requirements in places where the water resources are limited; but the RAS have also disadvantages like the deterioration of the water quality if the water treatment processes within the system are not controlled properly. The water quality problems in RAS were associated with low DO and high fish waste metabolite levels in the culture water. The objective of this study was to compare water quality in a RAS with water quality in a Limited Reuse System (LRS) for Arctic charr culture taking into account the oxygen demands of the fish; the metabolites production by the... |

Intensive culture of teleost fish introduces changes over the environmental conditions found in their spawning grounds, leading to reproductive dysfunctions. The manipulation of these parameters (photoperiod, temperature) represents a common technique to alter the reproductive rhythms and enhance the spawnings in terms of quality and quantity. Nevertheless, for each species some modifications or adjustments have to be done according to their reproductive strategies. The advantages of manipulating those parameters are primarily to schedule the spawning for a desired period of time and to obtain good quality and quantity eggs. Many factors such as tank dimension, light intensity, nutritional status and husbandry of broodfish and minimum stress level have... |

Spontaneous spawning of red porgy was achieved in captivity by using photoperiod and temperature control systems along the year. During a four-month reproduction period females released in average about 0.2 times their own body weight in oocytes with an energy content of 5.71 J mg-1 wet weight. A total of 28.8 x 106 eggs and approximately 200 g of viable eggs (wet weight) per female kg were obtained. The eggs and larvae quality in terms of hatching and larval survival rates experienced a significant variation during the spawning season ranging between 0%-92% and 0.3%-33.2% respectively. Comments in reference to the probable causes of these variations and the need of carrying on with this line of research are presented. |

Mariculture in Argentina has expanded over the last years. Flounders of the Paralichtydae family are a very important fishery resource due to their abundance, meat quality, and high market price. The first mass production of juveniles of Paralichthys orbignyanus in captivity was successfully performed in 2002 at the Estación Experimental de Maricultura (EEM), Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), Mar del Plata. Moreover, it has got potential as a species for cultivation, due to its behaviour in captivity, good growth, survival and feed conversion rates. In this study, the parameters that affect this flounder cultivation under controlled conditions and in closed recirculating seawater system, are presented. Temperature, pH, and... |

Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus acclimated to 27 °C were then held at 19, 23, 27 (control), 31 and 35 °C, and were examined for non-specific cellular and humoral responses after 12–96 h. Total leucocyte count decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 and 23 °C after 48 and 96 h, and when transferred to 35 °C over 12–96 h, respectively. Respiratory burst decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19, 31 and 35 °C over 24–96 h, whereas phagocytic activity and phagocytic index decreased significantly when fish were transferred to low temperatures (19 and 23 °C) and high temperatures (31 and 35 °C) over 12–96 h. Lysozyme activity decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 °C after 12–96 h, but increased... |
