Les Pêches Togolaises OceanDocs
Kusiaku, Y.K.J.; Sedroz, K.M..

RDP. OceanDocs
Ehrhardt, N.M.; Legault, C.; Prenski, L.B..
In this work we present a process of risk analysis related to the adoption of a Total Allowable Catch (TAC)based in series of allowable biological catches which contain uncertainty derived of the recruitment patterns which characterize the stock. With the information obtained by the F0,1, and F30. RDP, the exploitation ratio and with the 500 values of the projected biomass of 1995 obtained by Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the distribution of the allowable biological catches under a scheme of F0,1, and F30. RDP andfor a natural mortality of 0.38. The selected TAC is expected to beas closer as possible to the reference fishery mortality F0,1, and F30. RDP. As a result of the present risk analysis in this study in Macruronus magellanicus of the SW...

OceanDocs
Prenski, L.B.; Ehrhardt, N.M.; Legault, C..
Hoki, Macruronus magellanicus, is an important resource in the Argentinean multispecific southern demersal fishery. The species is distributed South of 46°S between the 50 and 200 meter isobaths. Thesouthern demersal fishery was almost nil prior to 1987, becoming more relevant toward the end of the 1980's. International fleets operating through several fishery agreement were those of the ex-Soviet Union,Bulgaria and Japan. Research on the abundance of hoki resources were initiated in the early 1970's; however, fishery research have been noticeably enhanced since 1992. In this study existing information on the Argentinean hoki fishery is integrated and an assessment of the status of exploitation of the species is carried out.As a result of the analyses, a...

Fisheries Co-Management - An Institutional Innovation. OceanDocs
Degnbol, P.; Nielsen, J.R.; Viswanathan, K.K.; Ahmed, M..
Current fisheries management approaches based on centralised government intervention have proven inadequate to deal with the present management and cannot meet its objectives including reverting stock depletion, resolving user-group conflicts, increase profitability and prevent social disruption. There is no easy solution to this problem. New institutions enabling fishing communities to deal with present pressures are needed. Fisheries management is however still largely government-driven although experiences worldwide show that various forms of partnership between government, industry and fishers strengthen management and produce results. Such partnerships have become known as co-management.

The management and directions for future research on Lake Victoria multispecies fisheries OceanDocs
Okemwa, E..
A brief review is presented on some of the measures taken to manage Lake Victoria multispecies fisheries. It is suggested that management enforcement is not working. The linkage between research, policy making, industry and artisanal fishery is considered. The paper examines how the whole process of taking management decisions might be modified to take into account the realities of life in the riparian states around the lake and of the complexities and uncertainties of multispecies fisheries. Research and assessment are considered. Understanding the multispecies fisheries and characteristics of contemporary fisheries management are described. Recommendations for future research are given.

Gender participation in fisheries management of Lake Victoria, Kenya OceanDocs
Lwenya, C. A; Lwenya, K.R.; Abila, Richard O.; Omwega, R..
Gender plays an important role in the artisanal fisheries, therefore it critical for both men and women to participate fisheries management. This paper analyzes gender responses to introduced or enhanced fisheries regulations and constraints to compliance so as to facilitate gender participation in the management of Lake Victoria in Kenya. Both primary and secondary data have been used. Results indicated that in Lake Victoria, there is a clear-cut division of labor differentiated by gender, which is culturally defined. Men and women respond to management measures differently due to differentiated roles and space they operate in. Poverty emerged as a constraint to both men and women but affecting the women much more due to lack of economic and status...

Bioeconomic modeling and risk assessment of the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus (Latreille, 1804), fishery in the Gulf of Batabanó, Cuba. The spiny lobster Panulirus argus is the major fishery resource in Cuba, which produced an average revenue of about 70 million US$ a year during 2000-2004. There are 1,280 fishermen and 7,840 workers linked to administrative, industrial and fishery activities in lobster exploitation, which makes a total of 9,120 persons who economically depend on this resource. In the Gulf of Batabanó, where 60% of the catch is obtained, the economic rent constitutes 74% of the revenue, which represented profits about 35.2 million US$ a year as an average over the last five years. Because of its economic relevance, updating and in-depth...

On the fish catch and discard of the shrimp fishery of Nigeria OceanDocs
Ajayi, T.O.; Adetayo, J.A..
Commercial landings and effort data over the period 1970-1980 as well as shrimp research vessel catches were analysed. Both shrimp and fish by-catch consistently showed seasonality in abundance. However, while shrimp catches declined from 49.20% of total in 1979 to 13.795 in 1980, incidental fish landings rose proportionately. The fish shovelled overboard measured 18.0cm or less in total length. Prominent among these were Brachydeuterus auritus, Ilisha africana and Vomer setapinnis. The fish discard amounted to 43.68% of the total catch.

Report of the INIDEP working group on assessment of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) north of 48° S (Southwest Atlantic Ocean) OceanDocs
Bezzi, S.I.; Cañete, G.R.; Pérez, M.; Renzi, M.A.; Lassen, H..
The assessment covers hake between 34° and 48°S (Argentina and Uruguay), excluding Golfo San Matías. Total international landings and Argentine catch-at-age and effort data available for the 1983-1991 period allowed an analytical assessment. Tunning of the VPA was made using Laurec-Shepherd analysis and Extended Survivor analysis. The results of these analysis are congruent with the information about the state of the stock. VPA biomass estimates are aound 2.1 and 2.7 mill. Tonnes, which are similar to those calculated through surveys. The Spawning Stock Biomass estimated for 1991 is considered to be within limits where the stock shows stable recruitment. At the present effort level, yield and Spawning Stock Biomass appear to remain stable. Management...
