Qualitätssicherung und Verbraucherschutz bei ökologisch erzeugtem Schweinefleisch (BÖL-Projekt Nr. 02OE453) Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert.

The effect of organic and conventional fruit cultivation system on mineral composition and sensory properties of cloudy apple juice Organic Eprints
Heinmaa, Lagle; Põldma, Priit; Tõnutare, T; Kahu, Kersti; Kidmose, Ulla; Lo Scalzo, R; Moor, Ulvi.
The aim was to determine the differences in mineral composition and sensory properties of cloudy apple juice depending on apple cultivation system. Three indigenous Estonian cultivars were chosen on condition that the same cultivars would be grown in organic and conventional orchards at the same geographical location. ’Krameri tuviõun’ and ’Talvenauding’ apples were harvested from old (over 30 years) low maintenance orchard and ‘Krista’ apples from 10-years old experimental orchard. 100 kg of apples per cultivar and cultivation system were stored at +3±2°C for two months and then pressed into juice using Lancman waterpress. Total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA) and content of P, K, Ca and Mg were determined from apples and from juice....

Økologisk kost og sundhed Organic Eprints
Brandt, Kirsten.
In 2000-2001 a review was produced on the topic "Organic food and human health", (http://www.agrsci.dk/foejo/DK/sider/pub/fojorap.html ). The review evaluated a large number of studies comparing the constituents of organic and conventional foods, as well as feeding studies comparing reproduction and health of animals fed with organic or conventional feed. Additionally studies on the connection between consumer values and food production systems were reviewed. The results showed that organic plant foods consistently contain more vitamin C, natural pesticides and higher dry weight percentage, less b-carotene, pesticide residues and protein, but the protein has a higher percentage of essential amino acids than in conventional plants. Organic animal...

Effect of tomato variety, cultivation, climate and processing on Sola l 4, an allergen from Solanum lycopersicum Organic Eprints
Kurze, E.; Lo Scalzo, R; Campanelli, G.; Schwab, Wilfried.
Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) are one of the most consumed vegetables worldwide. However, tomato allergies in patients suffering from birch pollen allergy occur frequently. Due to highly similar protein structures of the tomato allergen Sola l 4 and the major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1, patients cross-react with allergenic proteins from tomato as well as other fruits or vegetables. The aim of this study was to quantify Sola l 4 in various tomatoes differing in color, size and shape for identification of varieties with a reduced allergen level. Therefore, an indirect competitive ELISA using a specific polyclonal Sola l 4 antibody was developed. In addition, two varieties, both cultivated either conventionally or organically and furthermore...

Quality of lamb meat in organic vs conventional sheep farming. Organic Eprints
The specification of ‘Organic Farming’ on a product gives guarantees on the way is has been produced, but does not give any guarantees on his quality. There is however, an increased consumer demand concerning the products quality in organic farming. The aim of this project is to compare the quality of lamb meat produced under an organic system vs a conventional system. The comparison will concern the sensorial and nutritional qualities. Another aim will concern the ability of some methodologies to be used to trace the production system (organic vs conventional) on the product or the animal. The experimental design is : -Comparison of male Limousin house-fed lambs produced under organic (12 lambs) vs conventional (12 lambs) farming. These lambs are fed...

Dioxins in organic eggs: a review Organic Eprints
Marion, de Vries; Rene, Kwakkel; Aize, Kijlstra.
Eggs contribute for about 4% to the daily dioxin intake of humans. Research among layer farms in the Netherlands and other EU countries has shown that organic eggs contain more dioxin than conventional ones and that a significant number of organic farms produce eggs with a dioxin content that exceeds the EU standard. The hens’ intake of dioxins from various sources leads to an increase in the dioxin content of organic eggs. These sources include plants, feed, soil, worms and insects, and compared with hens on conventional and free-range farms, organic hens make more use of these sources due to better access to the outdoor run. Plants appear to be relatively unimportant as a source of dioxins. Also commercial organic feed generally has very low dioxin...

The Content of Selected Antioxidant Compounds in Bell Pepper Varieties from Organic and Conventional Cultivation Before and After Freezing Process Organic Eprints
Hallmann, Dr. Ewelina; Rembiałkowska, Prof. Ewa.
Sweet bell pepper is one of the best sources of ascorbic acid and a fair source of carotenoids in human diets. The levels of vitamin C are very variable and may be affected by maturity, genotype and processing. Vegetable freezing is one of the most efficient and adequate preservation methods. Organic fresh vegetables contained more bioactive compounds than conventional ones. Two bell pepper cultivars (Roberta and Ożarowska) have been selected for analysis. Vegetables were cultivated on organic and conventional farms in Poland. Ripe bell peppers have been collected in the same week of ripening and were chemically analyzed twice: fresh before freezing and after six month of storage in -20°C. Vitamin C content, carotenoids also the total flavonols content...

pH dependence of antimicrobial activity of berries Organic Eprints
Rokka, Susanna; Hellström, Jarkko; Mattila, Pirjo; Marnila, Pertti.
We have analyzed phenolic compounds from organically and conventionally grown blackcurrants and strawberries to test the idea if organically grown berries contain a higher amount of health-promoting phenolic compounds. Statistically significant differences between farms were found for almost all compounds. In strawberry, the impact of genotype and environment on the flavonol content was more important than the cultivation practice. The "health quality" from organically grown berries does not differ from those grown conventionally.

Is Your Farm Organic? Building Consumer Relationships Organic Eprints
Buila, Sarah.
The world food system is broken, the most prosperous nations are experiencing epidemics related to what they eat, fresh produce is not available for some people, and farmers growing organic food face many challenges within systems that don’t always support them. A farmer and a social worker, the presenter has a unique perspective to share. This presentation puts a lens on the United States’ food system, farmers who grow organic food and what needs to happen in order to transform the food system. The central thesis is that the relationship between the farmer and the consumer is key. A prime opportunity for contact and building these relationships is at the farmers market.

Effects of weed management strategies on quality and enteric pathogen contamination of organic lettuce Organic Eprints
Fischer-Arndt, Meike; Neuhoff, Dr. Daniel; Köpke, Prof. Ulrich.
Quality requirements for raw edible produce like lettuces include nutritional value and hygienic quality. Organic lettuce is often considered to cause a potential health risk for immunocompromised individuals due to assumed pathogen transfer from organically manured soils into lettuce heads (Lactuca sativa, var. capitata). The effect of different weed management strategies (rotary tiller, mouldboard plough combined with flame weeding, plastic mulch and straw layer, resp.) on pathogen transfer from fresh and composted farm yard manure were assessed in four field experiments in 2006 and 2007. Results gave no hint on any pathogen transfer given by the assumed pathways (contaminated soil particles transported by mechanical tools and/or splash effect of rain...

Can the restricted use of antibiotics in organic pig farming be documented to provide a safer, high quality meat product with less antibiotic resistant bacteria? Organic Eprints
Åbo, S.; Jensen, A.N..
The project SafeOrganic aims to document that the restricted use of antimicrobials in organic pig production leads to lower levels of antibiotic resistant bacteria compared with the level in conventional pigs. However, the project will also address the risk of losing this quality parameter, due to a widespread practice of slaughtering organic pigs together with conventional pigs, implying a risk of cross-contamination.
