Range extension of Boeckella bergi Richard, 1897 (Crustacea: Copepoda: Centropagidae), with comments on the taxonomy of the species Biota Neotropica
Previattelli,Daniel; Perbiche-Neves,Gilmar; Menu Marque,Silvina; Rocha,Carlos Eduardo Falavigna da.
We present new records of Boeckella bergi at several water bodies in Argentina and Brazil. Within these records the northernmost and southernmost limits of occurrence of B. bergi in South America are included. The ample range of distribution is consistent with former studies, but it is more extensive than previously known. Observations on habitat preferences are also made. This species is tolerant to temperate climate conditions in this region of South America, with wide amplitude of temperature between summer and winter seasons, and irregular patterns of precipitation.

Delariva,Rosilene Luciana; Neves,Mayara Pereira; Larentis,Crislei; Kliemann,Bruna Caroline Kotz; Baldasso,Mara Cristina; Wolff,Luciano Lazzarini.
Abstract The fish fauna of eight streams with different land uses of their watersheds (forested and rural areas) in the lower Iguaçu River basin was inventoried, in order to evaluate the composition and species richness. The fishes were sampled quarterly from May 2015 to February 2016, using the electrofishing technique. In total, 4,239 individuals were captured, belonging to six orders, 11 families and 26 species. The orders Siluriformes and Characiformes, and the families Characidae and Trichomycteridae were the most specious. Of the total species sampled, 65% were endemic to the Iguaçu River basin, four are not described and four are non-native. As expected to the Iguaçu River basin, the inventoried fauna revealed low richness and high endemism, however...

Marra,Raquel Cristina; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; Algarte,Vanessa Majewski; Ludwig,Thelma Veiga.
Abstract We conducted a taxonomical study of epiphytic diatoms on the macrophytes Polygonum hydropiperoides, Ludwigia peruviana and Alternanthera philoxeroides collected in the mesotrophic reservoir Piraquara II flooded in 2009, located in the state of Paraná. A total of 135 infrageneric taxa were identified, among them five at generic level and other five are first records to the state. We provided illustration, valve metrics, meristics limits and taxonomic reference for each taxon. Also, life forms and species frequency are given. The most frequent diatoms totalized 15.3% of total identified taxa and sporadic species represented 54.7%. Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing) Czarnecki and Brachysira neoexilis Lange-Bertalot occurred in more than 90% of...

Protozooplankton and its relationship with environmental conditions in 13 water bodies of the Mogi-Guaçu basin - SP, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bagatini,Inessa Lacativa; Spínola,Ana Lúcia Gerardi; Peres,Bianca de Miranda; Mansano,Adrislaine da Silva; Rodrigues,Mafalda Alexandra Antunes; Batalha,Marco Antônio Portugal Luttembarck; Lucca,José Valdecir de; Godinho,Mirna Januária Leal; Tundisi,Takako Matsumura; Seleghim,Mirna Helena Regali.
Protozooplankton is an important component of the aquatic microbial food webs and its composition, density, and distribution reflect the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the environment. Considering the scarce literature on freshwater protozoans in Brazil and on protozoan ecology in subtropical environments, we listed the ciliates and amoebae taxa found in 13 water bodies in São Paulo State and analyzed their abundance in relation to the environmental variables. We collected two samples in each environment, fixed immediately with mercuric chloride and stained with bromophenol blue. After microscopical analysis, 74 protozoan genera were identified and the Ciliophora were dominant in the majority of the environments. The Stichotrichia,...

Zooplankton (Copepoda, Rotifera, Cladocera and Protozoa: Amoeba Testacea) from natural lakes of the middle Rio Doce basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Maia-Barbosa,Paulina M.; Menendez,Rosa Maria; Pujoni,Diego Guimarães Florencio; Brito,Sofia Luisa; Aoki,Akemi; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio Rodrigues.
A list of zooplankton species identified during ten years of studies in the lake system of the middle Rio Doce basin is presented. This lake system integrates the Atlantic Forest biome, a biodiversity hotspot. Three types of studies were achieved by the Brazilian Long Term Ecological Research Program (Brasil-LTER/PELD-UFMG site 4): i) a temporal study (study 1) which sampled four lakes monthly and three lakes twice a year during ten years; ii) a comparative study of limnetic and littoral species composition (study 2) and iii) a spatial study (study 3) that evaluated the species composition of eighteen lakes (eight lakes inside the Rio Doce State Park (RDSP) and ten lakes in its surrounding area) during one year with quarterly sampling. A total of 354...

Periphytic algae in a floodplain lake and river under low water conditions Biota Neotropica
Bichoff,Andressa; Osório,Nicolli Cristina; Dunck,Bárbara; Rodrigues,Liliana.
Abstract Drought events will become more frequent due the climate change. In floodplains, periphytic algae are responsible for part of the primary production, are the principal source of organic carbon deposition, play an important role in mineralization and nutrient cycling, and are the base of the food web for many organisms. As algae distribution in aquatic environments is a strong indicator of physical and chemical conditions of the sites, we aimed to determine the structure of periphytic algae in lentic and lotic environments during drought conditions and to uncover the main local abiotic factors in community structuring. We hypothesized diatoms would be more frequent than green algae and desmids at both sites, due to their resistance characteristics,...

Feeding and trophic ecomorphology of Satanoperca pappaterra (Pisces, Cichlidae) in the Manso Reservoir, Mato Grosso State, Brazil BABT
Hahn,Norma Segatti; Cunha,Fabiane.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the relationship between diet and features of the trophic ecomorphology of Satanoperca pappaterra (Heckel, 1840) in an impacted environment. Samples were collected from March 2000 to February 2003 in Manso Reservoir, Cuiabá River, Mato Grosso State. Analysis of 93 stomachs contents showed that food resources associated with the substrate, such as plant remains, detritus, fish scales and Chironomidae larvae, dominated the diet. Consequently this species was characterized as a detritivorous-invertivorous. However, individuals collected in 2003 showed a greater selection of benthic organisms in relation to previous periods. Morphological structures such as position of the mouth, form of the lips, gill rakers and pharyngeal...

Diet of Iheringichthys labrosus (Pimelodidae, Siluriformes) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná River, Brazil-Paraguay BABT
Abes,Sara da Silva; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Okada,Edson Kiyoshi; Gomes,Luiz Carlos.
Iheringichthys labrosus is a secondary commercial fish species in the Itaipu Reservoir, but it is important in other reservoirs of the basin. However, little information exists about this species in the literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the diet of this species in the Itaipu Reservoir. Stomachs of 306 fishes were analyzed, collected from October 1994 to September 1996 in the differents zones of the reservoir (according to a longitudinal gradient). The reservoir was separated into riverine (upper reach), transitional (middle reach), and lacustrine (next to the dam) zones. Main items in the diet of I. labrosus were aquatic insects (mainly Chironomidae) and mollusks (mainly Bivalvia). Their presence in the diet did not vary according to...
