Postharvest R & D concerning tropical fruits AgEcon
Chudleigh, Peter D..
An economic evaluation of two Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) projects in the area of postharvest technology for tropical fruits was undertaken. This evaluation considered a 30 year time period from the first year of investment and assumed a discount rate of 5 per cent. The estimate of the net present value of the research and development investment was $93 million expressed in 1996/97 terms. The benefit–cost ratio was 38:1 and the internal rate of return estimated at 64 per cent. If benefits realised by 1996/97 were considered, the net present value was $30 million, the benefit–cost ratio was 13:1, and the internal rate of return was 63 per cent. Benefits accrued to both Thailand and Australia, with the proportion of...

DEMAND AND COMPETITION AMONG SUPPLY SOURCES: THE INDONESIAN FRUIT IMPORT MARKET AgEcon
Andayani, Sri R.M.; Tilley, Daniel S..
Indonesia is a rapidly growing and competitive market for U.S. fruit. A restricted, source-differentiated, almost ideal demand system is estimated for apples, oranges, grapes, and other fruit in Indonesia. The Marshallian expenditure elasticities for U.S. fruit are estimated to be between 1.01 and 1.21. For grapes and oranges, competition with other fruits appears to be more important that competition with other supply sources. For apples, strong source-differentiated substitution relationships are found.

Import Demand for Disaggregated Fresh Fruits in Japan AgEcon
Schmitz, Troy G.; Seale, James L., Jr..
Using annual Japanese fresh fruit import data from 1971-1997, this study analyzes the import patterns of Japan's seven most popular fresh fruits by implementing and testing a general differential demand system that nests four alternative import demand specifications. When tested against the general system using the five-good case (bananas, grapefruits, oranges, and lemons and aggregating pineapples, berries, and grapes), the analysis rejects the AIDS and NBR specifications, but does not reject Rotterdam and CBS. When estimated using the six-good case (bananas, grapefruits, oranges, lemons, pineapples, and aggregating berries and grapes), the analysis rejects all specifications except the Rotterdam model.

GYÜMÖLCSFOGYASZTÁS A JÖVEDELEM FÜGGVÉNYÉBEN AgEcon
Pecze, Denes; Kiss, Oszkar Zsolt; Szekely, Geza.

Ennek a magyarázatát elsősorban a jelentős mértékben megnőtt déligyümölcsimport adja. A kedvezőtlen...

Önálló beszerzési szervezet csupán 13 vállalkozásnál található a hatvan feldolgozóból. Ezek 500 millió Ft feletti árbevétellel rendelkező vállalkozások. A megfelelő beszállító megtalálása, a velük való hosszú távú kapcsolatok kialakítása egyformán fontos, ha van, ha nincs a szervezetben önálló beszerzés. Ahol nincsen beszerzési szervezet, ott...

Morphology and anatomy of the fruit and seed in development of Chorisia speciosa A. St.-Hil. - Bombacaceae Rev. Bras. Bot.
Marzinek,Juliana; Mourão,Káthia S.M..
The structure of the fruit and seed in development of Chorisia speciosa are described with the main purpose of clarifying the origin and nature of the hairs that cover the seeds and aiding future taxonomical and ecological studies of the group. The fruit is an ellipsoid loculicide capsule and presents the exocarp formed by 7-10 cells layers, with very thick walls and evident simple pits. A great number of mucilage secretory cavities and ramified vascular bundles, accompanied by fibers, occur in the parenchymatic mesocarp. The endocarp derives from the ventral epidermis of the ovary wall, whose cells undergo a gradual elongation, become lignified, and constitute the trichomes which cover the mature seeds. The fruit aperture occurs by means of a suture...

Cypsela or achene? Refining terminology by considering anatomical and historical factors Rev. Bras. Bot.
Marzinek,Juliana; De-Paula,Orlando Cavalari; Oliveira,Denise Maria Trombert.
The worry about the indiscriminate use of the terms cypsela and achene for the fruits of Asteraceae has been frequently detached by specialists in this family. The present work was developed aiming to verify the existence of arguments to justify the adoption of a term against the other. After historical and anatomical analysis, we concluded that there is technical basis to consider cypsela and achene as different types of fruits. For Asteraceae, the correct is to call cypsela; achenes are only derived from superior ovaries, as in Plumbaginaceae.

Road transport vibration stress impact on ‘Palmer’ mangoes quality and shelflife Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Costa,Josenara Daiane de Souza; Figueiredo Neto,Acácio; Olivier,Nelson Cárdenas; Irmão,Marcos Antônio da Silva; Costa,Marylia de Sousa; Gomes,Josivanda Palmeira.
Abstract Studying the causes of postharvest fruit loss is important to avoid reduction of quality and quantity for the consumer due, for example, to the influence of frequent impacts from vibrations during transportation. In this sense, this study evaluates the storage quality of ‘Palmer’ mangoes after being subjected to different simulated road transport vibrations. Vibration was simulated from the analysis of the profile of the frequencies generated in road transport of fruit, determined in a tractor trailer. ‘Palmer’ mangoes stored after vibration stress wereevaluated for: mass loss, absorbance difference index (IAD), peel and pulp browning index (BI), pulp firmness, soluble solids content, and titratable acidity. The development of a vibration machine...

Sustainable alternative for the food industry: converting whey and orange juice into a micro-filtered beverage Scientia Agricola
Fagnani,Rafael; Puppio,Ana Amélia Nunes; Zanon,Emely Osti.
ABSTRACT: Enhancing industrial sustainability by converting whey into alternative high value-added products is a scientific trend in food science and technology. However, without other ingredients, rennet, or sour, whey has an unappetizing flavor. This sensory challenge can be overcome by blending it with citrus flavor from orange juice. This study assessed a micro-filtered beverage from whey and orange juice without enzymatic treatment. Four formulations (27:10, 8.6:10, 2.4:10 and 1:10 v/v whey:juice ratio) were processed through a 1.4 μm microfiltration system with four different transmembrane pressures (1, 2, 3, and 4.15 bar) and then stored at 5 °C for 28 days. The micro-filtered beverage was analyzed for physicochemical, sensorial and microbial...
