ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to assess the genetic diversity among accessions of Paspalum notatum based on morphological marker traits and identify those morphological traits that contribute most to the variability among accessions. Fifty-three accessions were evaluated for the following traits: length, width, color, and pubescence of sheath; length, width, insertion angle, color of midrib, and pubescence of leaves; number, length, and angle of racemes; length of flowering stems; and plant growth habit (erect or prostrate). Multivariate analysis of the quantitative morphological data based on the Mahalanobis distance and UPGMA method grouped the accessions into 19 heterogeneous clusters. The relative contribution of each trait to cluster... |

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the genetic and non-genetic effects that influence vigor at birth and preweaning mortality in Nellore calves. A total of 11,727 records of births that occurred between 1978 and 2006, offspring of 363 sires, were analyzed. Poor calf vigor at birth (VB) and preweaning mortality divided into stillbirth (SB), early mortality (EM) and total mortality (TM) were analyzed as binary variables. Generalized linear models were used for the evaluation of non-genetic effects and generalized linear mixed models for genetic effects (sire and animal models). The incidences were 4.75% for VB, 2.66% for SB, 5.28% for EM, and 7.99% for TM. Birth weight was the effect that most influenced the traits studied. Calves weighing... |

ABSTRACT Bird attacks on the sunflower may hinder its exploitation in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different levels of protection (0, 33, 66 and 100%) of the capitula of eight sunflower cultivars, evaluated in randomized blocks with sub-divided plots and four replications. The cultivars were allocated in the plots and the levels of protection in the sub-plots, by covering the capitula with caps of non-woven fabric after physiological maturity. The most frequent bird species was the Paroaria dominicana. The Aguará 06 cultivar was the most productive and most tolerant to bird attack, followed by the Helio 250, CF 101 and Charrua cultivars. There was a positive correlation between yield loss (YL) due to... |

ABSTRACT In genetic improvement of the soybean crop, the selection process is complex and greatly influenced by the environment. One of the alternatives for facilitating this process is the use of selection indices, making it possible to select desirable genotypes for the early generations of breeding programs. The aim of this study was to compare different selection indices in segregating populations of soybean, indicating methods which are superior in various situations, and proposing economic weightings in order to obtain higher gains. Direct and indirect selection criteria were used, together with the classic Smith-Hazel index, an index based on the sum ranks of Mulamba and Mock, a Williams base index, an index based on the desired gains of Pesek and... |

The coefficient of variation (CV) has been the most important statistic to determine the precision of experimental errors, but an even classification for guiding popcorn breeders is still lacking for popping expansion. The normality of data from 50 CVs was tested through the Shapiro-Wilk test, and the mean (m), median, standard deviation (SD), maximum and minimum values, asymmetry and kurtosis were all determined using the momentum method. The CVs were ranked as low [CV ≤ (m - 1 SD)], moderate [(m - 1 SD) < CV ≤ (m + 1 SD)], high [(m + 1 SD) < CV ≤ (m + 2 SD)] and very high [CV > (m + 2 SD)]. In summary, these data were close to the normality because the slight and flattened curve was skewed to the right. The CV’s mean was... |

Forty-four Bacillus spp. strains obtained from sugar cane derivates and residues, six of them isolated in this work, were tested using Tween 80 as substrate (agar-Tween 80 medium), in order to determine their esterase activity through the enzymatic index averages. After statistic analysis, B. cereus (C124) strain, which presented better results, was submitted to genetic improvement by treatment with ultraviolet light (UV). The survival curve pointed out 28" as the time necessary to obtain 30% of survivors. Fifty survivors and the wild strain C124 were compared in relation to their esterase activity as mentioned previously. The wild strain and the mutant C124UV35, which showed enzymatic index average higher than C124, were characterized in polyacrilamide... |

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the major crop in terms of planted area and presents the largest distribution in the country covering a wide range of climatic regions. This study assesses the changes of various agronomic traits of winter wheat cultivars released in Chile between 1920 and 2000. A total of 117 winter accessions, representing 45 old and 72 modern cultivars were tested in a humid Mediterranean-type climate, with irrigation, in 2003. Old cultivars were those released before 1960 and modern ones were those released after 1960. Principal component (PC) analysis using 10 agronomic traits clearly separate modern from old cultivars of winter wheat. Comparing modern cultivars with old ones, plant height have been reduced by 25.6%, but others traits... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to use quantile regression (QR) to characterize the effect of the adaptability parameter throughout the distribution of the productivity variable on black bean cultivars launched by different national research institutes (research centers) over the last 50 years. For this purpose, 40 cultivars developed by Brazilian genetic improvement programs between 1959 and 2013 were used. Initially, QR models were adjusted considering three quantiles (τ = 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8). Subsequently, with the confidence intervals, quantile models τ = 0.2 and 0.8 (QR0.2 and QR0.8) showed differences regarding the parameter of adaptability and average productivity. Finally, by grouping the cultivars into one of the two groups defined from QR0.2... |

ABSTRACT: Knowledge on the variability and heritability of agronomic characters of interest aid the selection of superior materials. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic parameters of agronomic traits in castor bean plant lineages and to quantify the genetic correlations between them. The study was performed in the experimental area of the Federal University of the Recôncavo da Bahia, Cruz das Almas, Bahia. Seed oil content, vegetative cycle, plant height, and the number and weight of seeds per plant were evaluated in 47 lineages of castor bean seedlings. The coefficient of genetic variation was higher for weight of seeds per plant, revealing greater variability. The broad-sense heritability of individual plots presented a higher... |
