Low genetic variability in the fifth introduction of Litopenaeus vannamei in Cuba, as estimated with microsatellite markers OceanDocs
Artiles, A.; Rodríguez, I.; Pérez, A.; Pérez, L.; Espinosa, G..
The present work estimated the genetic variability and relatedness index of the fifth stock of Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, imported into Cuba for farming purposes from the US Shrimp Improvement System (SIS). Ge- netic variability was estimated by genotyping 33 samples for four microsatellite loci: M1, Pvan 1815, Pvan 0040 and Pvan 1758. This stock had average expected and observed heterozygosities of 0.37 and 0.27 respectively; the lowest of all stocks previously introduced in Cuba. The above, together with the low amount of allelic variants detected for each microsatellite, was suggestive of low genetic variability. In addition, pairwise relatedness coefficients clustered around unity, indicating a high degree of consanguinity. Taken...

Limitada variabilidad genética de la quinta introducción en Cuba de Litopenaeus vannamei estimada con el uso de marcadores microsatélites OceanDocs
Artiles, A.; Rodríguez, I.; Pérez, A.; Pérez, L.; Espinosa, G..

Genetic parameters for germination characters in twenty promising progenies of a çaizeiro for palm heart production PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Oliveira, Maria do Socorro Padilha de; Farias Neto, João Tomé de; Nascimento, Walnice Maria Oliveira do.
Germination of half-sib progenies of Euterpe oleracea Mart., promising for palm heart production were studied. A cluster with seeds of each progenie was selected at Embrapa Experimental Sation placed in Eastern Amazonia. Fruits were immersed in warm water and the chosen seeds were sown immediately. Randomized blocks design with 25 treatments (progenies), three repetitions and parcels of 100 seeds were utilized. Evaluation of the following characters were made: days for beginning (IG) and end (FG), average time (TM) and percentage (PG) of germination. Progenies presented genetic differences for germination characters. Beginning of germination (IG) and the average time (TM) showed the biggest estimates of heritability related to b index.

Genetic Variability Between two provenances of açaizeiro (Euterpe oleracea Martus) PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Farias Neto, João Tomé de; Müller, Antônio Agostinho; Oliveira, Maria do Socorro Padilha de; Santo, Dewis Eduardo Silva do Espirito; Silva, Mirna Rafaela Almeida da.
The objective of this work is to generate information about the distribution of the levels of genetic variability in two provenances of Euterpe oleracea. A sample of seeds of each individual from distinct regions had been collected at Curralinho and Limoeiro of Ajuru, localities of Pará State placed on the Estuary of Amazon river. The experiment was installed in randomized blocks with two replications and five plants per plot. Seedlings were evaluated, at 10 months of age for: height, diameter and number of leaves. Significant genetic variations between provenances for number of leaves were detected. Curralinho provenance presented greater genetic variability than Limoeiro do Ajuru. Small levels of coefficients of genetic variation among provenances shows...

Characterization of mandarin citrus germplasm from Southern Brazil by morphological and molecular analyses PAB
Koehler-Santos,Patrícia; Dornelles,Ana Lúcia Cunha; Freitas,Loreta Brandão de.
The objective of this work was to characterize mandarin (Citrus spp.) germplasm from Southern Brazil by morphological and molecular analyses. Thirty seven cultivars from 34 distinct mandarin varieties were evaluated by morphological and agronomic traits of leaves, flowers and fruits, and by microsatellite markers. The morphological and agronomic characteristics suggested that almost all varieties can be produced for commercial use, and some, as the Satsuma variety, are recommended for breeding programs. Pooled DNA samples from 1-5 plants belonging to each cultivar were tested. Eight of the nine primers detected polymorphisms. Specific markers were found for some accessions. The dendrogram constructed with the morphological results divided the 37 cultivars...

Analysis of preharvest sprouting in three Brazilian wheat populations PAB
Bassoi,Manoel Carlos; Flintham,John; Riede,Carlos Roberto.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the possibility of obtaining recombinant inbred wheat lines more resistant to preharvest sprouting, independently of colour genes, in three red-grained Brazilian wheat populations. The results showed statistical significance among lines within all populations, which presented a normal distribution and transgressive segregation for preharvest sprouting. The normal distribution of the lines from all red-grained populations suggests that sprouting, excluding the genes expressing seed coat pigmentation, is, probably, controlled by many genes. These findings also indicate that it may be possible to improve resistance to preharvest sprouting, independently of the colour genes.

Extreme homogeneity among Brazilian wheat genotypes determined by RAPD markers PAB
FREITAS,LORETA BRANDÃO DE; JERUSALINSKY,LEANDRO; BONATTO,SANDRO LUIS; SALZANO,FRANCISCO MAURO.
Random amplified polymorphic DNA markers (RAPD) were used to estimate the variability of 14 genotypes of Brazilian wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), using a set of 50 random 10mer primers. A total of 256 reproducibly scorable DNA amplification products were obtained from 48 of the primers, 83% of which were polymorphic. Genetic distances among genotypes were calculated and a dendrogram and a principal coordinates analysis showing the genetic relationships among them were obtained. Despite the low variability found (average genetic distance of 27%), two groups of genotypes could be identified, which probably reflect how they were formed. Studies such as this one may be important in the planning and development of future improvement programs for this plant...

Isoenzymatic variability in wild potatoes PAB
Rocha,Beatriz Helena Gomes; Augustin,Eliane; Silva,João Baptista da; Viégas,Judith.
Two species of wild potato Solanum commersonii, subspecies commersonii and malmeanum, and S. chacoense, subspecies muelleri occur in southern Brazil. Their rusticity and easy adaptation to extreme climatic conditions make them valuable for breeding programs. The objective of this work was to analyze the isoenzymatic variability of 113 clones of wild potato subspecies. They were collected and maintained at Embrapa-Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Clima Temperado, at Pelotas, RS, Brazil. Enzymes involved in energetic (group I) or in peripherical (group II) metabolism constituted the material used. Polyacrylamide horizontal gel electrophoresis was used to analyze peroxidase, aspartate transaminase, phosphoglucomutase and isocitrate dehydrogenase isoenzymes....

Residual effects of successive exposure of soybean Bradyrhizobium strains to aluminium on solid defined medium PAB
Campo,Rubens José; Wood,Martin.
The aim of these studies was to investigate whether residual toxic effects of exposing soybean root nodule bacteria to Al in a solid defined media (SDM) alter tolerance to Al, survival, sensitivity to antibiotics, N2 fixation effectiveness and genetic diversity of Bradyrhizobium strains. After being exposed four times to Al, strains showed variation in Al tolerance but there was no evidence of change in their original Al tolerance, sensitivity to the antibiotics or genetic diversity. Exposure of Bradyrhizobium strains to SDM plus Al did not alter biological N2 fixation effectiveness of five strains. Strain SEMIA 587 showed a reduction in its N2 fixation effectiveness but it seems that it was just a superficial toxic effect because one single passage...

Polymorphism of the grasshopper Rhammatocerus schistocercoides populations revealed by RAPD PAB
Silva,João Batista Tavares da; Tigano,Myrian Silvana; Magalhães,Bonifácio Peixoto; Cordeiro,Célia Maria Torres.
The objective of this work was to study the genetic variability of the grasshopper Rhammatocerus schistocercoides (Orthoptera: Acrididae) using RAPD analysis among individuals from three populations, one from Colombia and two from Brazil (Goiás and Mato Grosso States). Ninety scorable binary markers were obtained by fingerprinting with 11 oligonucleotide primers. Most of the polymorphism was attributed to 42 markers with variable frequency among the different populations. Although the existence of significant difference among populations (P<0.0001), most of the genetic variability was found within populations (87.7% of total variation). Pairwise distances between Colombian and Brazilian populations were 0.12 (P<0.0001) and 0.18 (P<0.0001) for...

Combining ability of twelve maize populations PAB
Vacaro,Elton; Barbosa Neto,José Fernandes; Pegoraro,Diego Girardi; Nuss,Claudio Natalino; Conceição,Leo Duc Haa.
Genetic progress depends on germplasm quality and breeding methods. Twelve maize populations and their crosses were evaluated to estimate combining ability and potential to be included as source populations in breeding programs. Plant height, point of insertion of the first ear, number of ears per plant, number of grains per ear, root and stalk lodging and grain yield were studied in two locations in Brazil, during the 1997/98 season. Genotype sum of squares was divided into general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability. Results indicated the existence of genetic divergence for all traits analyzed, where additive effects were predominant. The high heterosis levels observed, mainly in Xanxerê, suggested the environmental influence on the manifestation...

Local Seed Systems and Village-Level Determinants of Millet Crop Diversity in Marginal Environments of India AgEcon
Nagarajan, Latha; Smale, Melinda.
In the subsistence-oriented, semi-arid production systems of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, India, the environment is marginal for crop growth and often there is no substitute for millet crops. Across communities, farmers grow thirteen different combinations of pearl millet, sorghum, finger millet, little millet, and foxtail millet varieties, but individual farmers grow an average of only two to three millet varieties per season. The notion of the seed system includes all channels through which farmers acquire genetic materials, outside or in interaction with the commercial seed industry. Data are compiled through household surveys and interviews with traders and dealers in village and district markets. Based on the concept of the seed lot, several...
