Cholelithiasis with atrophy of the right lateral hepatic lobe in a horse Ciência Rural
Santos,Renato de Lima; Oliveira,Tatiane de Fátima Brandão de; Oliveira,Taismara Simas de; Galvão,João Felipe Brito; Paixão,Tatiane Alves da; Goloubeff,Barbara.
A 22 year-old horse developed cholelithiasis with marked atrophy of the right lateral hepatic lobe. The horse had a history of intermittent colic since three years of age, and one of the first episodes of colic was associated with icterus. The size of the right lateral hepatic lobe was extremely reduced. There was a large choledocholith in the common hepatic duct, and several hepatoliths and choleliths in the intra- and extra-hepatic billiary ducts. Microscopically, there was severe atrophy of the right lobe with diffuse proliferation of connective tissue and billiary ducts. The left lateral lobe had peri-portal fibrosis with proliferation of billiary ducts, and billiary stasis. Chemical analysis of the calculi detected amorphous and triple phosphate,...

An update on equine laminitis Ciência Rural
Laskoski,Luciane Maria; Valadão,Carlos Augusto Araújo; Dittrich,Rosangela Locatelli; Deconto,Ivan; Faleiros,Rafael Resende.
ABSTRACT: Laminitis is a severe podal affection, which pathophysiology remains partially renowned. Ischemic, enzymatic, metabolic and inflammatory mechanisms are connected to the development of laminar lesions. However, few therapeutic measures are effective to prevent or control the severity of acute laminitis and its prodromal stage, which often determines serious complications such as rotation and/or sinking of the distal phalanx and even the loss of hoof. The purpose of this study is to compile the actual knowledge in respect to the pathophysiology and treatment of equine laminitis.

Cerebral equine hydatidosis in Southern Brazil Ciência Rural
Ruas,Jerônimo Lopes; Schild,Ana Lucia; Fernandes,Cristina Gevehr; Ferreira,João Luiz Montiel; Müller,Gertrud.
Equine cerebral hydatid disease is described in a 7-year-old, crossbred, female horse. Clinical signs were characterized by circling gait, pressing of head against fences or objects and motor incoordination. On gross examination of the brain the hemispheres were swollen, mainly the left one. On transversal sections, a 5cm X 7cm fluid-filled cyst was observed within the lateral ventricle of the left hemisphere. The cyst extended from the parietal to the occipital lobe, and compressed the third ventricle. There was also marked mid line deviation. Histologically, the brain lesion adjacent to the cyst, was characterized by a piogranulomatous process and vacuolization of neuropil. A diagnosis of equine hydatidosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus was made on...

Effects of two different deep digital flexor tenotomy techniques on distal articular angles of equine cadaver forelimbs Ciência Rural
Dearo,Antonio Cezar de Oliveira; Rosa,Vitor Bruno Bianconi; Reichmann,Peter; Oliveira,Milton Luis Ribeiro de.
Deep digital flexor (DDF) tenotomy is a technique employed for years to treat selected disorders of the musculoskeletal system in horses. Although two different surgical approaches (i.e. mid-metacarpal and pastern) have been described for performing the procedure, in vitro quantitative data regarding the modifications induced by either technique on the distal articular angles is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of the study reported here was to investigate the viability of a proposed biomechanical system of induced-traction used to compare the two DDF tenotomy techniques by measuring the distal articular angles of equine cadaver forelimbs. Ten pairs of forelimbs were collected and mounted to a biomechanical system developed to apply traction at the toe...

Effect of warm-up intensity on horse-rider dyad’s performance in jumping Ciência Rural
Stachurska,Anna; Janczarek,Iwona; Wilk,Izabela; Jaworska,Katarzyna; Pluta,Michał; Kolstrung,Ryszard.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between the intensity of warm-up and scores of horse-rider dyads in jumping competitions, and which factors affect the warm-up regime. Three international competitions of 120, 130, and 135cm obstacle height, completed by 82 competitors, were studied. Warm-up intensity was measured by the time spent in the schooling area, number of practice jumping efforts, and coefficient of practice obstacle height. Out of the official final scores in the competitions, penalty points in the round and converted final placings were used as outcome measures. The data were analyzed with Spearman’s correlation, multifactorial analysis of variance, and Tukey’s test. The rider’s sex, part of the...

Seropositivity to Leptospira interrogans serovar Bratislava associated to reproductive problems without significant biochemical or hematological alterations in horses Ciência Rural
Pinna,Melissa; Martins,Gabriel; Freire,Isabel; Lilenbaum,Walter.
The objective was to study haematological and biochemical alterations associated to seropositivity to Leptospira interrogans serovar Bratislava infection in horses with reproductive alterations, such as neonatal deaths, embryonic deaths and abortions. A flock of mares with poor reproductive performance was studied. Eighty-two (58.6%) were seropositive (titre 200); 72 of those (87.8%) for Bratislava. Slight haematological and biochemical alterations were observed, being more frequent (P<0.05) in horses seropositive versus seronegative. In conclusion horses seropositive for Bratislava had no consistent, severe alteration in values for hematology and biochemistry serum. Those findings reinforce this serovar as adapted to the horse and causing only mild...

Salmonella Typhimurium - associated meningoencephalomyelitis in a foal Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Jéssica Guerra de; Ramos,Carolina Pantuzza; Rocha,Izabela de Assis; Marcelino,Sóstenes Apolo Correia; Pierezan,Felipe; Palhares,Maristela Silveira; Maranhão,Renata de Pino Albuquerque; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Teixeira,Raffaella Bertoni Cavalcanti.
ABSTRACT: A 10-day old foal presented with a history of acute recumbency and generalized weakness, that progressed to seizure episodes and death. Post mortem examination revealed necrotizing and purulent omphalophlebitis and fibrinopurulent meningoencephalomyelitis. Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from the central nervous system and determined to be the cause of the meningoencephalomyelitis. Due to the lack of evidence of gastrointestinal disease, the umbilical cord was considered the most likely portal of entry of the bacteria. The isolated S. Typhimurium was resistant to ampicillin and cephalotin, and partially resistant to enrofloxacin. These drugs are commonly used in the treatment of salmonellosis. This is the first report of S. Typhimurium...

Primary bilateral guttural pouch empyema in a two-month-old foal Ciência Rural
Dias,Deborah Penteado Martins; Bernardi,Nara Saraiva; Queiroz,Daniela Junqueira de.
The present report describes a 2-month-old foal which signs of respiratory infectious disease, bilateral retropharyngeal swelling and nasal mucopurulent discharge, suggesting guttural pouch empyema. The owners reported that the foal lived in a herd that experienced an outbreak of strangles. Foals younger than 3 months are usually protected against infectious diseases, however in this case, the foal was exposed to an environment heavily populated by Streptococcus equi equi during the outbreak of strangles. Although uncommon in such young animals, the foal was infected and developed a primary bilateral guttural pouch empyema, without signs of lymph nodes alteration
