"The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) is investigating the impacts of pollution from land-based sources and activities of the Caroni River Basin (CRB) on the marine environment... The project will investigate the types, sources, levels of pollution, fate of pollutants, and potential impacts on the marine environment. In addition, the project will investigate the impacts of physical alterations of habitats caused by land uses in the Caroni River Basin." |

Zygochlamys patagonica (King and Broderip, 1832) is an ecosystem engineer mollusk which forms aggregations or banks, of different densities, in the main frontal systems of the SW Atlantic Ocean. The objectives of this work were to analyze the composition, biomass, diversity and species richness of the benthic invertebrate assemblages at different scallop densities as well as the variability of their trophic webs at high and low scallop densities. For this, samples of the benthic invertebrate assemblages were taken at the Shelf Break Front with a non-selective epibenthic dredge. It was evaluated if the abundance (ind/m2) or biomass (colonial species, gr/m2) of the different taxa varied with scallop densities. The results showed that from 14 analyzed, the... |

The Marine Environmental Data Information Referral Catalogue (MEDI) is a directory system for datasets, data catalogues and data inventories within the framework of the IOC's International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) system. The IOC Working Group on International Oceanographic Data Exchange (now IOC Committee on International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange - IODE) at its Fifth Session (September 1971) recommended the establishment of a Joint Task Team on Interdisciplinary and Inter-organizational Data and Information Management and Referral (IMAR), with participation by interested international organisations. The team was asked to assess on-going information and data management activities within the respective... |

These last years, while adressing marine conservation problems in Western Africa, 3 major issues were generally raised by our local partners: -Most of the distant water fleets fishing in the coastal waters of other countries do not often abide by the international standards of responsible fishing; -The number of distant water fleets is steadily increasing in the Exclusive Economic Areas of developing countries; -Theses fleets have tremendous ecological and economic consequences, which resulted in a crisis of fishery management. Yet it is thanks to fishing agreements that distant water fleets have legal access to the fish resources of developing coastal countries.More important: it is thanks to subsidies that the behaviours of distant water fleets have such... |

Data obtained by observers on board of two fishing vessels during six trips carried out between January-April 2010 to catch tuna were analyzed. Thirty-four fishing days were completed and of the 59 trawls performed 37 turned out positive (with tuna catches). The fishing gear consisted of a purse seine net. Exploitation took place within the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone, between 36° S-39° S. The main landings occurred in March and consisted of slender tuna, Allothunnus fallai (57%), followed by albacore, Thunnus alalunga (28.5%), in January and bonito, Sarda sarda (14%), in April. Sea surface temperature ranged 16 °C-19 °C. A total of 25 length frequency samples allowed to measure individuals of the species above mentioned and those of skipjack... |

This second volume of a guide to integrated coastal zone management opens a new dimension by discussing the processes involved in a more complete and dynamic way than the first, To fulfil1 this requirement, an expanded work group, drawing upon the knowledge of experts in political science, economics, and sociology, devoted over two years of effort (1999 - 2001) to its completion, following a disciplined working method. A dual principle prevailed in the application of this method. On one hand, it prescribed an approach structured as a series of steps, and on the other, it demanded that real situations be brought to light, emphasizing case studies of experience with or analysis of coastal management. |
