The aim of this work was to understand by using a numerical model, the main characteristics of the Maputo Bay hydrodynamics; and furthermore to assess the hydrodynamics implications on the different processes that can occur in the Bay. The study was initiated with a description of the hydrodynamical characteristics of Maputo Bay, through the analysis of vertical profiles of salinity and temperature, time series of the components of tide currents and water elevation. The wind intensity and river runoff patterns were also studied. Analysis of temperature and salinity profiles have revealed that the Maputo Bay can be considered vertically homogeneous; however, when floods occur or when there is high intensity of precipitation on summer season, a horizontal... |

Bluemouth (Helicolenus dactylopterus), a benthic fish mostly inhabiting at depths between 500 m and 600 m, represents a highly valuable economic resource for local fishermen at the Azores Islands (NE Atlantic). Nominal catches of bluemouth increased from 1990 through 1994, and declined afterwards reaching in 1999 the lowest value recorded. Standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) was used as an index for stock relative abundance; a General Linear Model, considering several factors that may have affected the fishing efficiency of commercial vessels, was run to obtain this CPUE index. These factors were: fleet type, year, month, and boat size; the last three factors were found to be statistically significant. A discrete version of the Schaefers Biomass... |

With the purpose of easening its application, the theory of parameter estimation by the maximum likelihood method is presented. The theory is general and useful for linear and nonlinear models. The method is applied to the von Bertalanffy´s growth model for individual data and for mean values of length-at-age. Statistical tests to compare parameters from different population groups are presented. Problems caused by lack of verification of assumptions are discussed. An example of its application is given and results of nonlinear least squares estimations are compared to those obtained with Allen´s method. An example of application implemented on a calculus spreadsheet is attached. |

The daily spawning females fraction (S) of Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) in relation to the year, length, proportion of females, temperature and salinity variables was studied using generalized linear models. Samples were collected during eleven research surveys carried out in the main spawning seasons and areas during 1993-2008 (Southwest Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The aim of this work was to identify the factors that affect the spawning activity. No temporary differences were observed and an S 0.12 average value was estimated. The poor explanatory percentage of the models analyzed did not allow to clearly detect the variables that could affect S. Length and temperature were the only variables that related positively, which suggests that... |

New features have been added and several necessary changes have been made to the standard WAM-cycle4 (WAMC4) model code for it to run efficiently when applied to shallow water regions. The restriction of having a source term integration time step smaller than or equal to the propagation time step was relaxed, considerably reducing the computational time needed. An additional reduction in computing time and an increase in accuracy were obtained by introducing a split-frequency time step. There is now a choice of using the octant or quadrant coordinate system for the propagation of the wave energy. The source term integration and, more particularly, the use of a limiter on the energy growth, were studied. For the evaluation of the energy decay in shallow... |
