Classification of estuarine particles using automated electron microprobe analysis and multivariate techniques OMA
Bernard, P.C.; Van Grieken, R.E..
The suspended particulate matter from a series of stations in an estuary is automatically analyzed for 11 elements on a particle-by-particle basis by using electron microprobe X-ray microanalysis and an automatic image analysis system. The interpretation of the large acquired data set implies numerical multivariate analysis. The developed procedure consists of using cluster analysis on the particles of individual samples, followed by nearest centroid sorting over all samples from the study area. For the Ems estuary, the procedure provided 13 geochemically different particle types of which the relative abundance through the estuary could be followed and interpreted in terms of estuarine mixing processes. The presented methodology could be applied in other...

Interference of sample size on multicollinearity diagnosis in path analysis PAB
Sari,Bruno Giacomini; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal’Col; Olivoto,Tiago; Krysczun,Dionatan Ketzer; Tischler,André Luís; Drebes,Lucas.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the interference of sample size on multicollinearity diagnosis in path analysis. From the analyses of productive traits of cherry tomato, two Pearson correlation matrices were obtained, one with severe multicollinearity and the other with weak multicollinearity. Sixty-six sample sizes were designed, and from the amplitude of the bootstrap confidence interval, it was observed that sample size interfered on multicollinearity diagnosis. When sample size was small, the imprecision of the diagnostic criteria estimates interfered with multicollinearity diagnosis in the matrix with weak multicollinearity.

Genetic diversity in table grapes based on RAPD and microsatellite markers PAB
Leão,Patrícia Coelho de Souza; Motoike,Sérgio Yoshimitsu.
The objective of this work was to analyze the genetic diversity of 47 table grape accessions, from the grapevine germplasm bank of Embrapa Semiárido, using 20 RAPD and seven microsatellite markers. Genetic distances between pairs of accessions were obtained based on Jaccard's similarity index for RAPD data and on the arithmetic complement of the weighted index for microsatellite data. The groups were formed according to the Tocher's cluster analysis and to the unweighted pair‑group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). The microsatellite markers were more efficient than the RAPD ones in the identification of genetic relationships. Information on the genetic distance, based on molecular characteristics and coupled with the cultivar agronomic performance,...

Multifunctional agriculture: an analysis of country specialization and regional differentiation AgEcon
Pierangeli, Fabio; Henke, Roberto; Coronas, M.G..
Member States acknowledge the multifunctional role of the primary sector; however each of them emphasises specific functions according to its own model of agriculture and rural development. As a result, the CAP and the demand of citizens addressing a new role of the primary sector in post-industrial society have contributed to develop a specialisation of multifunctionality at the EU level that is more and more visible moving from an aggregated territorial level (Member Stares) toward a local one (regions). The objective of this paper is to analyse the specialization towards the secondary functions of agriculture at two different territorial and institutional levels: the national level (EU-25) and the regional level (in Italy), with the support of a...

Multivariate methods in aquaculture research: case studies of tilapias in experimental and commercial systems AgEcon
This volume documents the usefulness of multivariate methods û notably multiple regression, path analysis and canonical correlation û in the context of aquaculture, which has to date tended to neglect such methods, and hence to underutilize available data. All examples used here stem from experimental and/or commercial tilapia culture systems, and hence this book also represents an advance in the understanding of such systems.

A contribution to the phytogeography of Brazilian campos: an analysis based on Poaceae Rev. Bras. Bot.
Garcia,Ricardo José Francischetti; Longhi-Wagner,Hilda Maria; Pirani,José Rubens; Meirelles,Sérgio Tadeu.
Twenty areas from eight Brazilian states were compared according to a list of 224 species of Poaceae. In order to determinate affinity patterns between the areas, a binary matrix was submitted to cluster and ordination analysis. The patterns found were then faced to climate and geographic position. The scores corresponding to the areas obtained from the cluster analysis showed a strong correlation to temperature. The scores corresponding to the species suggest a gradient that associates distribution patterns to the photosynthetic pathway (C3 or C4). The current results suggest that the traditional classification of the Southern American grasslands might require some modification in order to be broadly applicable in the Brazilian context.
