This study analyses the larval recruitment and biology in Crassostrea Gigas, in the Arcachon Bay. Three types of observations were conducted: - a study of the reproduction anomalies in C. gigas between 1976 and 1981. - observations of the particulate nutrition of the veligeres. - ecotoxicologic experiments (organostannic action on oyster reproduction, mostly). The reproduction anomalies in C. gigas could not be attributed to either the genitors' quality or the water quality in the Arcachon Bay, but to a perturbation of the veligeres' trophic regime; the hypothesis of an alteration of the nanoplancton in the Bay, during the summer period, and linked to the action of the organotins is highly considered. The assumption of responsibility of the particulate... |

Coastal systems could be affected by hypoxic events brought about by global change. These areas are essential nursery habitats for several fish species including the common sole (Solea solea L.). Tolerance of fish to hypoxia depends on species and also on their physiological condition and nutritional status. Indeed, high dietary lipid content has been recently shown to negatively impact the resistance of sole to a severe hypoxic challenge. In order to study the molecular mechanisms involved in the early response to hypoxic stress, the present work examined the hepatic transcriptome in common sole fed diets with low and high lipid content, exposed to severe hypoxia. The activity of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) was also investigated through the... |

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of Rhodomonas salina in the diet of Pecten maximus on growth, survival and metamorphosis success in relation to biochemical content. Food quality is an essential factor in the success of larval, post-larval and juvenile development. A diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids present an advantage for growth, survival and metamorphosis success. Larvae and post-larvae fed with the diet containing R. sauna showed a higher accumulation of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) and generally a lower concentration of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3). Addition of R. sauna in diet was related with higher level of eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) in larval stages, but lower level in post-larvae. Addition... |

The indigenous oyster of mainland France, the fiat oyster, Ostrea edulis has been part of the human diet for centuries. The Romans collected them and exported them to Rome. Although tanks for holding oysters after harvesting were in use at that time (GreIon 1978) it seems that true culture was not developed along the coast contrary to the records of Pliny the Older. It appears that oysters were already being captured on hoards off the Italian coast. The exploitation of natural stocks continued through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. However, it was not until the 17th century that oyster culture began, first in the pools of the salt marshes of the Atlantic coast and then in specially managed ponds. Papy (1941) repeats a good description given in 1688... |

Xenophyophores, widespread giant deep-sea protists, dominate the megafaunal organisms visible on the seafloor in some areas. Owing to the extreme fragility of their tests (external part), little is known about them, and their diet is largely a matter of speculation. The extensive accumulation of fecal pellets (stercomes) within their tests attests to the degree to which xenophyophores feed on particulate matter. During the EUMELI 2 cruise, xenophyophores were recovered intact at the surface of box-cores from an abyssal mesotrophic site in the northeastern Atlantic. They were identified as Syringammina corbicula. In our study, we compare the lipid composition of xenophyophores collected at the top of cores with sediment from the same mesotrophic environment... |

An individual's environmental history may have delayed effects on its physiology and life history at later stages in life because of irreversible plastic responses of early ontogenesis to environmental conditions. We chose a marine fish, the common sole, as a model species to study these effects, because it inhabits shallow marine areas highly exposed to environmental changes. We tested whether temperature and trophic conditions experienced during the larval stage had delayed effects on life-history traits and resistance to hypoxia at the juvenile stage. We thus examined the combined effect of global warming and hypoxia in coastal waters, which are potential stressors to many estuarine and coastal marine fishes. Elevated temperature and better trophic... |

The zooplankton of an eutrophic brackish lagoon (Etang de Berre), near Marseille (France) was studied during an annual cycle. It was characterized by large populations of a pelagic copepod (Acartia tonsa ). Grazing on natural particles by this species was investigated. Adults were able to use an extended range of particle sizes, but showed selectivity for particles concentration was observed (14 mu m). Temperature and particles concentration appear to modify the selectivity behavior. Juvenile stages could also catch particles of various size but did not show the same selectivity for the peak particles as adults. Daily food ration was high comparatively to open-sea copepods. Taking into account several results obtained on food ration, egg production and... |

Pseudoplatystoma punctifer is an Amazonian catfish highly appreciated for its high flesh quality, size, and commercial value. Its aquaculture is pursued to satisfy the demands of an increasing population in the region. However, knowledge of the nutritional needs during the early life stages is necessary for improving growth and reducing the incidence of cannibalism, factors that limit the success of its commercial farming. This study aimed at evaluating the influence of four diets containing different protein and lipid levels (30:15, 30:10, 45:15, or 45:10 in %) in the digestive physiology and performance of early juveniles. The results showed that the dietary protein:lipid as well as carbohydrate levels and ratios influenced differently the whole-body... |

A twice monthly study shows that the major amount of organic material is from detrtic origin, and is brought in winter, when valeus of mineral seston are very high. In the sping time, phytoplancton blooms, do not make up for lack of detritic material where as in the summer, oceanic phytoplancton is composed of important amounts of carbohydrates. Available food is defined as sum of protids, lipids and carbohydrates and mesured in energetic therms. This allows to foretell the amount of food that molluscs ar likely to assimilate. |
