Competitive forbs in high-producing temporary grasslands with perennial ryegrass and red clover can increase plant diversity and herbage yield Organic Eprints
Nawa Raj, Dhamala; Karen, Søegaard; Jørgen , Eriksen.
In highly productive temporary grasslands in Europe, plant diversity is usually low. Some non-leguminous species have shown a high competitive ability in temporary grasslands and can increase plant diversity without compromising yields. In an experiment, the competitiveness and productivity of three forb species: chicory (Cichorium intybus), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and caraway (Carum carvi), grown in different proportions in mixtures including traditional sown grassland species, perennial ryegrass and red clover, were examined with slurry application as an additional factor. Dry matter (DM) yield and botanical composition were measured during one complete growing season. Annual DM yields were mostly similar when forbs were included in the...

An overview on the role and potential of forage production on lowland organic livestock farms Organic Eprints
Weller, Richard F; Jones, Evan L.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). This paper outlines some of the factors influencing the level of forage production on organic lowland farms. Optimal forage production is achieved by maintaining soil fertility, providing a balance between N-fixing and N-demanding crops and producing sufficient quantities of quality feed to meet the requirements of the organic livestock enterprise. A key objective for organic systems is to increase the efficiency of forage production by improving the nutrient input/output balance of the wholefarm system. Improving forage quality reduces the requirement for external feed sources, leading to increased self-sufficiency in the wholefarm system....

Fatty Acids, α-Tocopherol, β-Carotene and Lutein Contents in Forage Legumes, Forbs, and a Grass-Clover Mixture Organic Eprints
Elgersma, A.; Søegaard, K.; Jensen, S.K..
Fresh forages are an important natural source of vitamins and fatty acids in ruminant diets, and their concentrations in forage species are important for the quality of animal-derived foods such as dairy and meat products. The aims of this study were to obtain novel information on vitamins and fatty acids (FA) in a variety of forage legumes and non-legume forb species compared to a grass−clover mixture and to explore implications for animal-derived products. Seven dicotyledons [four forbs (salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor), caraway (Carum carvi), chicory (Cichorium intybus), and ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata)) and three legume species (yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis), lucerne (Medicago sativa), and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus...

Micro-mineral profile in different grassland species Organic Eprints
Søegaard, K.; Sehested, J.; Jensen, S.K..
The aim was to investigate the micro-mineral profile of herbage as affected by grassland species, cutting time and seasonality and in relation to dairy cow requirements. The different grassland species were grown and harvested in mixtures with one grass and one legume for two growing seasons. The species turned out to have very individual mineral profiles, not influenced by year. Among the legumes red clover (Trifolium pratense) had high concentrations of Co, Cu and Zn, white clover (Trifolium repens) of Mn and Fe, lucerne (Medicago sativa) of Se and lotus (Lotus corniculatus) of Co, Mn, Zn and Fe. Among the grasses perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) generally had the highest concentrations of all the micro-minerals. Hybrid ryegrass (Lolium hybridum) had...

Wirkung verschiedener Nutzungsintensitäten auf montane Goldhaferwiesen im Biolandbau Organic Eprints
Angeringer, Wolfgang; Starz, Walter; Karrer, Gerhard.
In 2012 about 25 % of permanent Austrian grasslands were managed organically. At the same time the farms enlarged their average field areas especially in Alpine regions. In order to investigate intensification limits of montane meadows, an on-farm field experiment at the Upper Styrian Pöls valley was established in 2008. The triannual case study consisted of a balanced incomplete block design with 30 sub-plots at two autochthonous meadows of the Trisetetum association. These examined six treatments with different cutting regimes (2, 3, 4 cuts per year) and either slurry or solid manure for organic fertilization. Three years of investigation describe changes in coverage of grassland species as well as yield quantity and quality. The results show changes in...

Symbiotisk N2 fiksering i kløvergræs Organic Eprints
Vinther, F.P..

Podstatzky, Leopold; Thurnhofer, R..
The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of silage quality and duration of ensiling to the recovery of infectious larvae of endoparasites. 48 silage bags of different quality were prepaired (gras, gras and earth, gras and silage additive, gras and earth and silage additive). Third larvae of a parasite larvae mixture were added. Larvae were recovered by the methode of Baermann-Wetzel. Significant differences were seen between groups in the larval recovery with more recovery in groups with additional earth. Differences in pH were ambivalent, but samples without added earth were at least numerically better.

Empirical model for quantification of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in grass-clover mixtures Organic Eprints
Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Loges, Ralf; Jensen, Erik Steen; Jørgensen, Finn V.; Vinther, Finn P..
Symbiotically fixed nitrogen (N2) is an important input of nitrogen (N) source in many agricultural systems. In spite of this fact, the input of symbiotically fixed N to a particular cropping system is usually not known and exact measurements are costly and laborious. Consequently, there is a demand for an uncomplicated and reliable tool to estimate symbiotic N2 fixation (SNF) in leguminous crops. A simple emperical model is proposed for quantification of SNF in forage legumes under low external input conditions. The model estimates SNF using dry matter yield as input and parameters for (i)N concentration in dry matter and the (ii) proportion of the N in the legume that is derived from the atmosphere. Further, the model includes fixed N not included in the...

Management of forb species mixtures for high biomass production Organic Eprints
Mortensen, T.; Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, K..
Including forb species in grassland mixtures may secure a more biodiversity-friendly production of biomass. This experiment showed interesting future perspectives in terms of production of low-cost biomass for e.g. biogas production, which can be obtained by reducing the number of cuttings without compromising yield levels. No significant differences in dry matter (DM) yields of chicory, birdsfoot trefoil, yarrow and a 13 species mixture were observed between the situations with four compared to one autumn cut per year. Especially the 13 species mixture showed great potential in terms of yield and suppression of unsown species, for which reasons it should be developed further through knowledge on the species in pure stands.

Designing high-yielding, high-diversity and low-input temporary grasslands Organic Eprints
Søegaard, K.; Mortensen, T.B.; Eriksen, J..
Species-rich swards have received increasing interest due to their focus on ecosystem services, animal welfare and product quality. However, in high-yielding swards the proportion of herbs is often limited and there is little knowledge of their management. Seed mixture composition, cutting frequency, fertilization and grazing/cutting strategies were examined over 4 years in 3 experiments to quantify their effects on herbage yield and botanical composition. Inclusion of herbs in the sward gave similar or higher annual yields but swards established with 100% herbs depended on the presence of a driver species. The effects of management differed between species. Herb content in the sward was significantly related to the proportion of herbs in the seed...

Simulating leaching losses following incorporation of grass and grass-clover leys Organic Eprints
Berntsen, Jørgen; Petersen, B.M.; Pedersen, A.; Jensen, L.S..
Dynamic simulation models can be useful tools for predicting the residual effect of leys, but only if they have been calibrated and validated appropriately for this particular situation. The BIOMOD project has aimed at expanding, calibrating and validating two Danish dynamic simulation models, namely FASSET and Daisy, for a range of crop rotational situations occurring in organic farming. Here we report on the calibration results for an extensive experiment with residual effect and nitrate leaching following grass-clover leys.

The development of organic milk production systems Organic Eprints
Weller, R.
The main objective of the 4-year project was to provide both qualitative and quantitative information on the development of two contrasting organic dairy systems, including the benefits and limitations of each system and also the opportunities for improving the systems. The first system (SS system) was based on an extensive and sustainable system, with the objective of achieving a high level of self sufficiency and sustainability by minimising the importation of nutrients into the system. Therefore, the cropping rotation for the system included forage crops for grazing and conservation and also cereal crops to provide both grain (for feeding as a concentrate) and straw for bedding. The main objective of the second system (PC system) was to change from a...

Agronomic factors affecting yield and quality of extractable leaf protein 1 concentrate (LPC) in forage crops Organic Eprints
Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
The study aims to find the optimal cutting strategy and forage plant species for organic production of leaf 11 protein concentrate (LPC) and to investigate if sulfur fertilization have a positive effect on the content of the 12 sulfur containing amino acids cystine and methionine. The protein recovery in green juice and amino acid 13 composition of the proteins were measured for 23 common and alternative forage species grown in an 14 organic cropping trial. Total protein yield in green juice was measured for three different cutting strategies (2, 15 3 and 4 cuts per season) in three different forage species mixtures. The forage species mixtures were given 16 three levels of sulfur fertilization (0, 30 and 60 kg S ha-1). Results indicated that the economic...

Einfluss der Weideaufwuchshöhe auf Ertrag und Zuwachsleistung im Berggebiet Organic Eprints
Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Weißenbach, C.; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
Sward height is a key parameter for rotational grazing. Influence of different sward heights (low: 8 cm, medium: 10 cm, high: 12 cm) on DM yield and grass growth rate were investigated on an intensive grazed area at the research farm of the Organic Institute of AREC Raumberg-Gumpenstein during the vegetation period of 2013. The significant highest yields were found in treatment “high” (12,581 kg DM ha-1) and “medium” (12,119 kg DM ha-1). Treatment “low” reached a yield of 10,343 kg DM ha-1. During summer, grass growth rate was about 60 kg DM ha-1 day-1 in average.

The effect of cutting strategy on production and quality of high-yielding multispecies grasslands Organic Eprints
Søegaard, Karen; Eriksen, Jørgen.
There is an increasing focus on biodiversity and feed resources for pollinators. However, the integration of these elements into high-yielding temporary grasslands is a challenge. With the main aim of continuous flowering we examined three strategies with four cuts per year, in which the time of the spring cut varied. In total we had 10 different harvest times during the season. This was combined with 12 different species mixtures in two categories. One was high-yielding mixtures composed of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), white clover (Trifolium repens) and red clover (Trifolium pratense), either alone or with either chicory (Cichorium intybus), ribwort plantain (Plantago planceolata) or caraway (Carum carvi). The other category was lower-yielding...
