Predation as a Mortality Factor in Populations of the Spittlebug, Deois flavopicta Stål (Homoptera: Cercopidae) Neotropical Entomology
SUJII,EDISON R.; GARCIA,MARIA A.; FONTES,ELIANA M.G.; O'NEIL,ROBERT J..
The spittlebug, Deois flavopicta Stål, is the main pest in cultivated pastures of the "Cerrados" (savanna) in the central region of Brazil. The insect has three discrete generations during the rainy season (September-April) and a synchronized population of diapausing eggs during the dry season (May-August). Experiments in cultivated pastures showed that nonspecific predators were able to affect significantly the mortality rates of diapausing eggs and nymphs of D. flavopicta. Predation was a density independent mortality factor that reduced diapausing eggs by approximately 60% and nymphs by 20% to 47%. The nymph mortality rate due to predation did not differ during the first and the second generations of the year. For the third generation however, the...

Allee effect in exotic and introduced blowflies Neotropical Entomology
Serra,H; Costa,Mis; Godoy,Wac.
We combined two models to investigate the theoretical dynamics of five exotic and native blowfly species in response to the Allee effect by using demographic parameters estimated from experimental populations. Most of the results suggest stabilization of dynamic behavior in response to the Allee effect. However, the results depended on the magnitude of the demographic parameters of each species, and also indicated chaotic fluctuations and limit cycles. The results are discussed in the context of larval aggregation, an important biological process for blowflies, which naturally incorporates the Allee effect.

Monthly collections were made using two traps 5 m apart exposed for 48h, containing sardines and installed at points: A at the edge (500 m from the entrance of the Reserve); B 1200 m from the entrance and 1000 m inside the forest; and C 1700 m from the entrance and 500 m inside the forest. The purpose was to evaluate the abundance and richness of calliphorid species as a function of the environmental conditions using Pearson's correlation, compare the richness of the areas using ANOVA and Tukey's test, compare the abundances of the areas by the Kruskal-Wallis test, and also assess the possible influence of the anthropic presence. Rare, intermediary and common species were identified. The collection totalized 8515 Calliphoridae belonging to 26 species, with...

Temperature-dependent development of the entomopathogenic fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Neotropical Entomology
Edelstein,Julio D.; Trumper,Eduardo V.; Lecuona,Roberto E..
The influence of temperature on the development rate of the entomopathogenic fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) 3rd-instar larvae was studied under constant temperature regimes. A non linear model was used to describe temperature-dependent vegetative and reproductive development rates of the fungus. The temperature required to reach the highest vegetative development rate was estimated to be 25.5ºC while lower and upper developmental thresholds were 11ºC and 30ºC, respectively. The rate of development for conidia release was stable from 18ºC to 26ºC. The estimated lower and upper thresholds of vegetative development coincide with conditions during the natural epizootics in central Argentina. Non-linear effects of...

Photoperiodism and seasonality in neotropical population of Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) Neotropical Entomology
Campos,Wellington G..
Neotropical populations of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella L. have seasonal cycles of growth and decrease, and moth migration plays a fundamental role in generating such population dynamics. Since the oscillation of these populations is predictable, photoperiod might operate as a signal that triggers the migratory behaviour of the insect. Migration in insects is usually preceded by reproductive diapause, a photoperiodic response that can be characterised by morphological, physiological and behavioural alterations that permit to discriminate between migratory and non-migratory forms. In this study, I tested whether the pre-imaginal and reproductive development of P. xylostella from Minas Gerais (Brazil) is affected by artificial day-lengths that...

A regional analysis of weather mediated competition between a parasitoid and a coccinellid predator of oleander scale Neotropical Entomology
Gutierrez,Andrew P.; Pizzamiglio,Marina A..
The regulation of an asexual population of the oleander scale [Aspidiotus nerii Bouchè (Hemiptera: Diaspididae)] on California bay tree [Umbellularia californica (Hopk. & Arn.) Nut.] by two natural enemies; an idiobiont, ectoparasitoid Aphytis chilensis Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) and a coccinellid predator (Rhysobius lophanthae (Blaisd.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), was examined using a general weather-driven, tri-trophic, physiologically based age-mass structured demographic model. The model is of intermediate complexity and was parameterized using extensive laboratory data and field observations from Albany, CA. Temperature-dependent physiological indices were estimated from the laboratory data and used to scale per capita growth,...

Distribution of Agonostomus monticola and Brycon behreae in the Río Grande de Térraba, Costa Rica and relations with water flow Neotropical Ichthyology
Ribeiro,Thiago Cotta; Villalobos,Gerardo Umaña.
Fish monthly samples were made in three tributaries and in the main stream in order to study population dynamics and the influence of flow on abundance of Agonostomus monticola (Mugilidae) and Brycon behreae (Characidae) in the basin of Térraba River Basin (Costa Rica). Flow was seasonal in these rivers, with peak flow in October. Recruitment was different among the species, B. behreae recruited from January to June and A. monticola all year round with a peak in June-July and October-November. Juveniles were more abundant in smaller streams. Abundance was higher in general during low flow and low turbidity periods. The results suggest that the streams have an important role in the maintenance of both species in the ecosystem, where juveniles can use the...

Dia, M.A..

OceanDocs
Ba, I.S..
