Cooperative vs. Non-Cooperative Spatial Competition for Milk in the Presence of Farm Marketing Cooperatives AgEcon
Graubner, Marten; Koller, Ines; Salhofer, Klaus; Balmann, Alfons.
Although important, the spatial dimension is often neglected in studies of market power and competition in agricultural markets. This paper investigates spatial competition for raw milk between dairies under the presence of marketing cooperatives. Since observed in reality, our model is based on uniform delivered pricing and overlapping market areas. We compare spatial cooperative price matching with non-cooperative Hotelling-Smithies conduct. Utilizing a vector error correction model we show that the observed low price transmission in Germany is in line with cooperative behaviour. This seems rational since it increases processors profits. The abolition of the quota system may increase price transmission.

Non-parametric and Parametric Modeling of Biodiesel - Sunflower Oil - Crude Oil Price Relationships AgEcon
Hassouneh, Islam; Serra, Teresa; Gil, Jose Maria.
Multivariate local linear regression and parametric error correction models are applied to assess price linkages and price transmission patterns between food and energy prices in Spain. Weekly biodiesel, sunflower and crude oil prices observed from November 2006 to October 2010 are used in the empirical analysis. Results suggest the existence of a long-run equilibrium relationship between the three prices studied. Biodiesel is the only variable that adjusts to deviations from this long-run parity. Local linear regression techniques show that the speed of adjustment of biodiesel prices is higher when biodiesel is cheap than when it is expensive. Energy prices are also found to influence sunflower oil prices through the short-run price dynamics.

Have Recent Increases in International Cereal Prices Been Transmitted to Domestic Economies? The Experience in Seven Large Asian Countries AgEcon
Dawe, David.
International cereal prices (in US dollar terms) have been increasing since 2003, but it is domestic prices that affect food consumption and production. This paper analyzes, for seven large Asian countries, the extent to which domestic prices have increased since 2003 and presents several conclusions. First, the data show that the increases in world cereal prices have been accompanied by a real depreciation of the US dollar. For many countries (but not all), this depreciation has neutralized a substantial proportion of the increase in world prices. Second, domestic commodity specific policies in several of these Asian countries have further stabilized domestic prices relative to the change in world prices. This has been especially true for rice, the main...

Transmissão de preços na cadeia de carne suína: uma aplicação para preços de São Paulo AgEcon
Weydmann, Celso Leonardo; Seabra, Fernando.
Changes in the pork chain bring about the discussion whether the wholesale sector has the leadership of price transmission and also if prices are efficient market indicators. The paper aims to identify what segment is the price leader in the pork chain and also to characterize the price volatility considering producer, wholesale and retail prices for the state of São Paulo between 1995 and 2005. The data analysis was conducted by estimating a VAR model which included an ARCH process for measuring price volatility. A Granger causality test was also implemented to check the price direction transmission. The results pointed out that price transmission occurs from wholesale to producer sectors and also that the price conditional variance for the wholesale...

Price Transmission in Differentiated Product Market Channels: A Study of the Boston Fluid Milk Market and the North East Dairy Compact AgEcon
Dhar, Tirtha Pratim; Cotterill, Ronald W..
This study develops a two-stage market channel model to analyze pricing in the Boston milk market where retailers are differentiated sellers. A nonlinear model of demand and costs, including firm specific and industry cost shift variables is estimated for each of the four leading supermarkets. Cost pass through rates for industry wide shifts are near 100%; for firm specific costs they range between 32 and 47 percent, suggesting that substantial differentiation and related market power. A test for focal point collusion finds that channel firms elevated retail prices when the Northeast Dairy Compact elevated and stabilized raw milk prices.

A FONTOSABB HAZAI TERMÉKPÁLYÁK ÁRALKUINAK JELLEMZŐI AgEcon
Varga, Tibor; Tunyogine Nechay, Veronika; Kemeny, Gabor.

Semiparametric Evidence on the Nature of Price Transmission in Tanzanian Maize Markets AgEcon
Ihle, Rico; von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephan.
Maize is a major staple food in Sub-Saharan Africa. Monthly maize prices in Tanzania are analyzed since the country is an important maize producer and exporter in East Africa. We analyze price transmission between the five most important urban regions of Tanzania between 2000 and 2008 which correspond to major maize production or consumption areas. We propose a novel method for the analysis. The semiparametric vector error-correction model allows the partial impact of the past deviations from price equilibria on current price changes to be potentially nonlinear. The nonparametric estimates of these partial influences suggest that they can be adequately modeled by linear functions.

The impact of food scares on price transmission along the food marketing chain AgEcon
Hassouneh, Islam; Serra, Teresa; Gil, Jose Maria.
In this paper we show how regime-switching vector error correction models can be used to assess the effects of food scares on price transmission along the food marketing chain. Our empirical implementation focuses on the impacts of the BSE crisis on price relationships and patterns of transmission among farm and retail markets for bovine in Spain. Monthly prices are used over the 1996-2005 period. A BSE food scare index is developed in order to measure the scale of the food scare crisis. Results suggest that the crisis affects beef producers and retailers differently. While consumer prices are not found to adjust to the crisis, producer prices do, though only when the scale of the food scare reaches certain minimum levels.

Consequences of BSE disease outbreaks in the Canadian beef industry AgEcon
Stephen Clark, J.; Cechura, Lukas.
This study examines farm to wholesale prices spreads to measure the impact of the BSE disease outbreak on the Canadian beef industry. The study uses structure break tests developed by Gregory and Hansen (1996) and Hansen (1992) examine possible breaks within co integrating relationships. The study finds evidence that the industry began realignment as a result of the UK BSE disease outbreak, and the Canadian BSE disease outbreak was simply the largest realignment of the process beginning with the UK disease outbreak. However, the only statistically significant break was the BSE disease outbreak itself in May 2003. Stability was not restored until the border was reopened in 2005. Specific results indicated that the processing sector exploited the border...
