Metallo-beta-lactamase producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated in hospitals in Recife, PE, Brazil BJM
Magalhães,Vera; Lins,Ana Kelly; Magalhães,Marcelo.
Out of 24 nosocomial strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from Recife, Brazil, 15 (62%) were metallo-beta-lactamase producers. Such isolates were resistant to main antipseudomonas drugs, except polymixyn B and aztreonam. The enzyme responsible for the carbapenem-resistance belongs to SPM-1 class, and the gene involved, blaspm-1, is likely plasmid located.

Detection of extended spectrum beta lactamases, ampc beta lactamases and metallobetalactamases in clinical isolates of ceftazidime resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa BJM
Umadevi,Sivaraman; Joseph,Noyal M; Kumari,Kandha; Easow,Joshy M; Kumar,Shailesh; Stephen,Selvaraj; Srirangaraj,Sreenivasan; Raj,Sruthi.
We studied the prevalence of ceftazidime resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the rates of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC β-lactamase (AmpC) and metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) production among the ceftazidime resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A very high rate of MBL production was observed, which suggested it to be an important contributing factor for ceftazidime resistance among Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Comparison of plant growth-promotion with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis in three vegetables BJM
Adesemoye,A.O.; Obini,M.; Ugoji,E.O..
Our objective was to compare some plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) properties of Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as representatives of their two genera. Solanum lycopersicum L. (tomato), Abelmoschus esculentus (okra), and Amaranthus sp. (African spinach) were inoculated with the bacterial cultures. At 60 days after planting, dry biomass for plants treated with B. subtilis and P. aeruginosa increased 31% for tomato, 36% and 29% for okra, and 83% and 40% for African spinach respectively over the non-bacterized control. Considering all the parameters tested, there were similarities but no significant difference at P < 0.05 between the overall performances of the two organisms.

Nickel biosorption by Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from industrial wastewater BJM
Rodríguez,Carlos E.; Quesada,Adolfo.
Nickel biosorption ability was evaluated in two bacterial strains: Acinetobacter baumannii UCR-2971 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa UCR-2957, resulting in greatest adsorption at pH 4.5 and a residence time of 100 minutes. Biosorption isotherms showed that the process follows the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption rates (Nmax) were 8.8 and 5.7 mg·g-1 for A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa, respectively; however, affinity constants suggest that P. aeruginosa (K=1.28) has higher affinity for nickel than A. baumannii (K=0.68). It is suggested that both strains could be used for wastewater treatment, as long as the concentration of Ni2+ is within the range of mg·L-1.

β-lactamase-producing Gram-negative bacteria in an intensive care unit in southern Brazil BJPS
Leite,Clariana Akemi Kariya; Oizumi,Karina Yoshimi; Caleffi-Ferracioli,Katiany Rizzieri; Scodro,Regiane Bertin de Lima; Pádua,Rubia Andreia Falleiros de; Cardoso,Rosilene Fressatti; Pires,Claudia Terencio Agostinho; Siqueira,Vera Lucia Dias.
ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility profile, β-lactamase production, and genetic diversity of Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. using phenotypic identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and β-lactamase phenotypic detection. Isolates were obtained from patients in an intensive care unit in a hospital in southern Brazil. Bacterial genomic DNA was extracted, followed by the genotypic detection of carbapenemases and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR). Fifty-six isolates (26 Klebsiella pneumoniae, five Escherichia coli, three Enterobacter aerogenes, nine P. aeruginosa, and 13 Acinetobacter spp.) were evaluated. The phenotypic...

AGENTES INFECCIOSOS ISOLADOS DE Chinchilla laniger Ciência Rural
