Oil flax was cropped in Switzerland in former times but seldom today. To investigate new varieties with respect to their agronomic performance and suitability for the production of cold-pressed oil, 15 varieties of spring flax were tested in the years 2005-2007 at one site. They were sown in small plots with four replicates and managed according the rules of Swiss organic farming. Averaged over the years, seed yield of the varieties ranged from 1.4 - 1.9 t/ha. Pressure of pests and diseases were generally low and weeds were controlled successfully by mechanical means. In order to recommend flax varieties for the production of oil, oil quality aspects need to be considered and investigated carefully. |

Agronomical ways for better quality and safety Choice of cultivar is an efficient way to obtain higher grain quality. Intercropping legumes (grain or forage) improves weed competition and N availability for wheat crop or succeeding crop. Green manure can be an effective alternative to farmyard manure. Fertilization with readily available nitrogen improves yield and quality when water is available. Reduced tillage affects soil fertility and wheat yield but has little effects on grain quality. Technological ways for better quality and safety Milling process strongly influences flour characteristics. Stone milling improves nutritive value; characteristics remain very stable independent of the milling yield. Flour characteristics from roller milling... |

There is a general need to increase grain legume protein production in Europe to meet an increasing demand. A certain import of conventionally produced protein feed sources is presently allowed on organic farms, e.g. soybean meal, free of genetically modified soybean grain, and oilseed rape cakes. However, from 2005 all feed used in animal production must be organically produced according to EU regulations. In that perspective evaluation of potentials for increased protein production via the growing of grain legumes in organic cropping systems is urgent. |

The success of the establishment of living mulch systems in cereals is, among other factors, dependent on the seeding time both of the main crop and the associated crop, which may be planted together or at different seeding times. In this contribution, the results of a series of experiments are summarized, where both the absolute and the relative seeding time of winter wheat as main crop and subterranean clover as associated crop has been varied. Early seeding favored the clover, later seeding the main crop. Competition can be regulated by anticipating the seeding time of one of the components. However, an equilibrated mixed canopy could be obtained by seeding both components together. |

Soybean silage can replace part of the lucerne hay or part of the lucerne silage. Practical recommendations. Observations and practical tips • Best at the R6/R7 stage (full seed size for apical pods and beginning maturity for basal pods). • Late harvests (stage R7/R8) promote good silage fermentation and preservation of the product; however, there is a loss of dry matter. • If harvest occurs at stage R5/R6, use a swather to mow the soybean 24 to 48 hours prior to chopping (at around 35 % dry matter). • Choose varieties with low levels of anti-nutritional factors. • Increase seed rate to decrease stem diameter. • Consider using a microbial inoculum to promote proper fermentation. |

Generally, purple-flowered peas are assumed to be less susceptible to soilborne pests. Ten peas were compared regarding tolerance to soilborne diseases and above- and belowground biomass yield on two soils with soil fatigue and a cultivation substrate as a control. In the pot experiment, five purple-flowered and five white-flowered grain and forage peas were tested. Purple-flowered peas had no higher tolerance to soilborne diseases compared to white-flowered peas. Forage peas were not less susceptible to soilborne diseases compared to grain peas, too. But purple-flowered peas showed a lower decrease in biomass yield among others due to a lower reduction for field emergency on soils with soil fatigue. This may cause a higher tolerance to soilborne pests... |

With the aim of identifying key factors for field pea yield, 52 fields on 21 organic farms were evaluated from 2009 to 2011. Criteria for evaluation were soil variables, crop data, management and field history. The average pea yield of all farms was 2.1 t/ha including 5 fields that did not harvest due to inadequate growth and/or high weed pressure. Based on measurements in three control points per field, yield was 65 % higher when harvesting by hand. The main causes were heterogeneous crops and high yield losses through combine harvesting. According to multiple linear regression analysis of yields in control points, factors leading to high pea yield included deep soil, high available phosphorous content, low clay content and longer intervals between pea... |

Consumers have become more aware of healthy and safe food produced with low environmental impact. We studied the quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L., winter form) grown in a 21-year agro-system comparison between organic and conventional farming in Central Europe, known as the DOK experiment. The 71% lower addition by plant available nitrogen to the organic field plots led to 14% lower wheat yields. However, the nutritional value, i.e. protein content and baking quality, were hardly affected by the farming systems. Despite exclusion of fungicides from the organic production systems, the quantities of mycotoxins detected in wheat grains did not differ. Food preference tests, as an integrative method, indicated a tendency for rats to prefer organically... |
