Fauna of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Goytacazes National Forest and surrounding area, State of Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Virgens,Thieres Marassati das; Rezende,Helder Ricas; Pinto,Israel Souza; Falqueto,Aloísio.
Abstract Mosquitoes comprehend a group with a major impact on public health, because some species transmit parasites vertebrate hosts. Comparative studies between preserved environment and disturbed areas provide important epidemiological information, due to the major knowledge on species populational dynamics and the possibility of a contact between vector species and human population. This work aims to characterize and compare the fauna of mosquitoes in the Goytacazes National Forest (GNF) and surrounding area, in the State of Espírito Santo, in Brazil. Collections occurred simultaneously in a preserved environment and in a peridomicile, from 15:00 to 18:00, between July 2008 and May 2009. In each environment, it was used a modified trap of Shannon type....

Cladocerans (Crustacea, Anomopoda and Ctenopoda) from Cerrado of Central Brazil: Inventory of phytophilous community in natural wetlands Biota Neotropica
Sousa,Francisco Diogo Rocha; Elmoor-Loureiro,Lourdes Maria Abdu; Mendonça-Galvão,Luciana de.
The aim of this study was to inventory the cladoceran fauna in wetlands located in two large areas that protect fragments of Cerrado. Located in the Brasília National Park-DF and Campo de Instrução de Formosa-GO, these wetlands are formed by upwelling groundwater, with extensive vegetation cover. We found 24 species in the Brasília National Park and 30 in the Campo de Instrução de Formosa. The observed richness reached approximately 80% of the estimated values for both protected areas. Moreover, the community of cladocerans in the kind of environment studied appears to be influenced by depth, with higher values of richness and similarity in wetlands of higher average depths. However, shallow wetlands contributed to the total richness with exclusive...

Diversity of small land mammals in a subtropical Atlantic forest in the western region of the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Maestri,Renan; Galiano,Daniel; Kubiak,Bruno Busnello; Marinho,Jorge Reppold.
Small land mammals possess features that significantly influence the dynamics of ecosystems and participate in various levels of the food web. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest the richness of these animals is high, which makes them even more ecologically and numerically relevant in this environment. In this context, we investigated the species composition of small mammals in an unexplored area of southern Brazil, and compared the species composition of this area with other Atlantic Forest regions in order to understand how this community is related to others. The study area was located in an interior Atlantic forest formation, at a transition region between deciduous and Araucaria forests. Small mammals were captured at five collection points using pitfall...

Ecology and diversity of a lizard community in the semiarid region of Brazil Biota Neotropica
Andrade,Maria Jaqueline Monte de; Sales,Raul Fernandes Dantas; Freire,Eliza Maria Xavier.
Composition, species diversity and resource usage in terms of space and time were evaluated for the lizard community of the Ecological Station of the Seridó (ESEC Seridó), Rio Grande do Norte. An observation area of 150 m × 150 m (2.25 ha) was delimited and surveyed monthly in alternate turns (morning, afternoon and night) for three consecutive days from April to October 2011, covering dry and rainy seasons. Fourteen species belonging to eight families were recorded, being Tropidurus semitaeniatus the most abundant. Seasonality influenced species richness and abundance. Regarding habitat usage, Lygodactylus klugei was the most generalist species, whilePhyllopezus periosus, P. pollicaris and T. semitaeniatus were specialists, showing affinity for rocky...

How many species of drosophila (Diptera, Drosophilidae) remain to be described in the forests of São Paulo, Brazil?: species lists of three forest remnants Biota Neotropica
Medeiros,Hermes Fonsêca de; Klaczko,Louis Bernard.
This paper describes the composition and abundance of Drosophila species found in three forest remnants in the State of São Paulo. A well-standardized sampling procedure applied on four collecting trips to the same sites on four areas resulted on 944 samples. All males collected were identified by analyses of the genitalia, this being the only data set used. One hundred and twenty five species were detected amongst the 29,289 males analyzed. From them 57,6% could be identified as described species. Thirteen of the species found were absent from the previous species list for the state of São Paulo State, thus represent an increase of 13% on the number known. We argue that the majority of the 53 unidentified species are in fact undescribed. The sites studied...

Snake assemblage of Ilha de São Sebastião, southeastern Brazil: comparison to mainland Biota Neotropica
Centeno,Fernanda da Cruz; Sawaya,Ricardo Jannini; Marques,Otavio Augusto Vuolo.
We provide a checklist of snake species from Ilha de São Sebastião (Ilhabela), the largest coastal island in Brazil located on the northern coast of São Paulo state. We also compare snake diversity (including richness and relative abundance of species) of Ilhabela and the nearest mainland municipality, São Sebastião. We obtained the data from the herpetological collections of the Instituto Butantan and Museu de Zoologia of Universidade de São Paulo, including records from 1939 to 2005. We recorded twenty snake species from Ilhabela (N = 376 individuals), and the dominant species was the viperid Bothrops jararaca with 55% of dominance. In São Sebastião we recorded 27 species (N = 625), and Bothrops jararaca was also the dominant species, but with 25% of...

Fishes community composition and patterns of species distribution in Neotropical streams Biota Neotropica
Cavalheiro,Laísa Wociechoski; Fialho,Clarice Bernhardt.
Abstract: The ichthyofauna of streams in the Neotropical region is not yet fully known. This study aims to investigate the ichthyofauna composition of six streams of the Ijuí River sub-basin, Rio Grande do Sul State, inserted in the Uruguay River basin, as to contribute to the knowledge of fishes species richness and distribution in the south of Brazil. Sampling was carried out between July 2015 and May 2016, bimonthly, using the technique of electric fishing to collect the fishes. Spatial variations (per sampled stream) in the ichthyofauna composition were tested with a permutational multivariate analysis of variance. In total, we collected 5,029 individuals from 55 species, 13 families and five orders. From these species, 17 are endemic to the Uruguay...

Falconiformes assemblages in a fragmented landscape of the Atlantic Forest in Southern Brazil BABT
Loures-Ribeiro,Alan; Anjos,Luiz dos.
An ecological analysis focused on distribution of Falconiformes, comprising abundance and morphology data, is provided. Samples were collected in a fragmented landscape within the Atlantic Rainforest, southern Brazil, between August and November 2001. Four main types of habitats were pinpointed among the 30 different sampling sites, while eight external morphological traits were employed. Twenty-one Falconiformes species were detected and jackknife estimates for regional richness reached 24.8 ± 2.56 species (p<0.05). There were no differences between average number of diurnal birds of prey species in the different habitats under analysis (H-test, p>0.05). Mantel's test for relative abundance and species morphology reveals weak association rates,...
