Assessment of genetic variability in two lots of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) introduced to Cuba OceanDocs
Machado Tamayo, R..
To monitor the genetic variability of L.vannamei shrimp-specie as founder stock and their correspondent first generation (F1), four microsatellite DNA loci species-specific for these animals were used. Data from allelic diversity (size, number and frequency of alleles) and levels of hetrozygozity were obtained as measures of genetic diversity. The protocol used is belonging to the lab, from the Norwegian College of Fishery science (NFH) of the University of Tromsø (Uitø). The results indicated a decrease in some of measures for genetic diversity. The number of allele (Na) ranged from 1-9 and their effectives number of alleles (ne) from 1.1 to 6.72. The mean value observed heterozygosity (Ho) by populations range from 0.29 to 0.63, which were lower than the...

Variación del residual de sulfito en el camarón de cultivo Litopenaeus vannamei almacenado en hielo OceanDocs
Flores Gutiérrez, E. R.; Espino Martínez, R.; Wong Wong, C.; Pérez Luis, M..
The absorption and loss of the sulfhite in the shrimp has great importance in their post-crop handling, since the sulfhite residual can give a measure of the protection that presents the shrimp against the appearance of the melanosis. Shrimps were taken and underwent to a treatment in solution of MBS to 8 % using different times of immersion, being determined the residual of sulfhite in the product obtained in each case. Additionally, the shrimps tried during five minutes were placed in plastic containers with ice in proportion 1:1, those that were storaged in a refrigeration camera to a temperature between 7 and 10 °C during five days. The residual ones were determined every day with the objective of quantifying the losses that take place during the...

Probióticos como herramienta biotecnológica en el cultivo de camarón: reseña OceanDocs
Villamil-Díaz, L.; Martínez-Silva, M.A..

Growth response of penaeid postlarvae to dry diets containing <i>Artemia</i> biomass meal OMA
Abelin, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
The results are presented of a feeding experiment conducted with post-larvae of <i>Penaeus monodon</i> and <i>P. vannamei</i> using formulated dry feeds in which <i>Artemia</i> biomass was incorporated. The total and partial substitution for Artemia nauplii were evaluated. Survival rates in the experiment were not very high, indicating that nutritionally balance dry diets do not support the same growth as Artemia nauplii, which must contain a particular ingredient yet to be identified

International study on <i>Artemia</i> : 33. Promising results in larval rearing of <i>Penaeus stylirostris</i> using a prepared diet as algal substitute and for <i>Artemia</i> enrichment OMA
Léger, P.; Bieber, G.F.; Sorgeloos, P..
The importance of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) such as 20:5omega3 and 22:6omega3 has been investigated for the larvae of the blue shrimp <i>Penaeus stylirostris</i>. HUFA-rich or HUFA-enriched <i>Artemia</i> nauplii yielded higher production results in the hatchery than HUFA-poor <i>Artemia</i> especially when yeast was used as a substitute for algae during the early larval stages. Best results were obtained when a HUFA-rich formulated diet was used as a supplement to the yeast and as an enrichment for the <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. Differences in production results could be attributed to the HUFA content in living and non-living larval diets.

Comparison of phosphatidylcholine purified from soybean and marine fish roe in the diet of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> Boone OMA
Coutteau, P.; Kontara, E.K.M.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effects of adding two different types of phosphatidylcholine (PC) (purified from soybean lecithin, SPC, or marine fish roe, MPC) on growth, survival and osmotic stress resistance as well as lipid and fatty acid composition of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> was determined. PC was added at a level of 1.5% in a semi-purified diet containing similar levels of essential fatty acids (EFA). A PC-free diet served as the control treatment. The supplementation of 1.5% SPC significantly improved growth and reduced sensitivity to osmotic stress. <i>P. vannamei</i>-fed MPC showed inferior growth compared to those fed SPC, but yielded better growth and survival than the PC-deprived shrimp. The addition of any of the PC types resulted in a...

Experiences on importance of diet for shrimp postlarval quality OMA
Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This paper gives an overview of own experiences with respect to the impact of dietary conditions on the quality of postlarval penaeid shirmp. Direct nutrient-specific effects are documented for highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA), phosphatidyl choline (PC) and ascorbic acid (AA). Specific immunostimulants may also contribute to an improved stress resistance of the shrimp fry. Last, but not least, some emphasis is placed on the role of the microflora during the hatchery rearing, the possible reduction of bacteria in the live food adminstered, and the use of probionts through the diet.

HUFA levels in eggs of wild and cultured broodstock of <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> OMA
Lavens, P.; Piyatiratitivorakul, S.; Menasveta, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The variation in egg quality, i.e. the potential of the egg to produce viable fry, is still a limiting factor in the commercial production of marine fish and crustacean fry. Better knowledge in this field would contribute to improved and especially more consistent hatchery outputs and to the development of more suitable broodstock diets. So far, objective criteria to evaluate egg quality are scarce. However, it is very likely that the nutrient composition of the eggs may be a good indicator for egg viability as it reflects the nutrient demands of the developing embryo and larva. Since (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) have been identified as essential nutrients for the larvae of marine fish, shrimp and prawn a case study has been initiated with...

Ensiled <i>Artemia</i> biomass: a promising and practical feed for penaeid shrimp postlarvae OMA
Abelin, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
Unlike <i>Artemia nauplii</i> which are used extensively as convenient live feed in aquaculture, large-scale utilization of <i>Artemia</i> juveniles and adults (biomass) is still very limited and in most cases restricted to those operations which are located near an <i>Artemia</i> production site. Currently applied techniques for preservation of <i>Artemia</i> biomass (e.g. blast-freezing or drying) are often cost prohibitive and in several cases not applicable at the remote and scattered sites where the <i>Artemia</i> biomass is available. An inexpensive technique which can be readily applied under field conditions and allowing to stabilize and retain the nutritional quality of...

Improved production of postlarval white shrimp through supplementation of L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate in their diet OMA
Kontara, E.K.M.; Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Robles, R.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (ApP) was used as a vitamin C source to study the ascorbic acid (AA) requirements for the early postlarval stages of white shrimp (<i>Penaeus vannamei</i>). First the stability of ApP in the diets was determined: ApP losses after pelletizing and 10 min immersion in seawater were 25-35% and 30%, respectively. Semipurified diets with five levels of ApP (0, 20, 40, 100 and 200 mg kg-1 expressed as active AA were fed <i>ad libitum</i> to <i>P. vannamei</i> (PL-14 stage, mean dry weight 0.73 mg) for 26 days. Each treatment was run in five replicates. No significant differences in growth were observed among treatments after 26 days of feeding. As of day 19 of feeding, increased...

Tosta,Gitonilson Antonio Moreira; Albinati,Ricardo Castelo Branco; Carvalho,Gleidson Giordano Pinto de; Carvalho,Jaciane Vergne de; Souza Filho,José Jerônimo de; Vasconcelos,Fabíola Rios; Kuhnen,Vanessa Villanova; Sanches,Eduardo Gomes.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate different feeding rates on the productive performance of cobia (Rachycentron canadum) grown in brackish waters. For the experiment, 1,600 juveniles were distributed in 16 enclosures installed in an estuarine pond. Four different feeding rates were evaluated: 1, 3, 5, and 7% live weight (LW) per day. The following performance parameters were assessed: survival, final biomass, specific growth rate, daily weight gain, apparent feed conversion, protein efficiency rate, lipid efficiency rate, and hepatosomatic index. Survival was greater than 80% at all feeding rates. The most efficient feed conversion rate was obtained with the feeding rate of 5% LW per day, which also resulted in better values for the...
