How Retail Beef and Bread Prices Respond to Changes in Ingredient and Input and Costs AgEcon
Roeger, Edward; Leibtag, Ephraim S..
The extent to which cost changes pass through a vertically organized production process depends on the value added by each producer in the chain as well as a number of other organizational and marketing factors at each stage of production. Using 36 years of monthly Bureau of Labor Statistics price indices data (1972-2008), we model pass-through behavior for beef and bread, two retail food items with different levels of processing. Both the farm-to-wholesale and wholesale-to-retail price responses are modeled to allow for the presence of structural breaks in the underlying long-term relationships between price series. Broad differences in price behavior are found not only between food categories (retail beef prices respond more to farm-price changes than do...

Prospects for a European Animal Welfare Label from the German Perspective: Supply Chain Barriers AgEcon
Franz, Annabell; von Meyer, Marie; Spiller, Achim.
The Federal Government of Germany as well as the European Commission are discussing the establishment of an animal welfare label. This label should enable consumers to make a conscious purchasing decision on animal welfare products. Various studies show that many consumers (in Germany around 20 %) prefer products produced under animal friendly conditions. However, the supply of such products is limited. The following study examines the source of this discrepancy by way of an action‐based analytical approach and identifies different barriers within the supply chain that prevent the establishment of a market segment for animal welfare products. Although consumer demand will be decisive for long‐term success, first of all the stakeholders of the supply chain...

Delivering Seeds of 'Orphan' Crops: The Case Studies of Potato and Groundnut in India AgEcon
Pal, Suresh; Singh, Harbir; Mathur, Prasoon.
This paper examines the performance of the Indian seed system in the context of high volume, low value seed, using the case studies of potato and groundnut. In theory, public sector should be able to address seed needs of farmers growing these crops. However, the ability of the public sector is constrained by a number of institutional and technical factors, and farmers largely depend upon traditional sources of seed. The traditional sources meet more than two-thirds of the total seed demand , and the rest is met by the formal seed system, mainly public seed agencies. Most of the farmers buy fresh seed for quality reasons, and only 12-15 percent farmers purchase seed to change variety. In potato, technological innovation provided options to enhance...

Can supply chain's coordination mechanisms include small holders? Insight from an empirical work in Costa Rica. AgEcon
Faure, Guy; D'Hotel, Elodie Maitre; le Coq, Jean-Francois; Saenz, Fernando.
Small holders' agriculture is currently facing new stakes due to State's withdrawal from agricultural support and to higher market requests for producing agricultural products. Different coordination mechanisms can be observed inside the supply chains involving farmers, farmers' organizations, and others stakeholders. They depend on the nature of the product, the characteristics of the stakeholders involved, the technical specifications related to the transactions, and the institutional environment. Relying on a comparative case study methodology, the paper analyzes the consequences of different coordination mechanisms on inclusion or exclusion of small farmers in the northern region of Costa Rica. Market coordination could be an efficient way to integrate...

Relationships Between Food Processors and Traders in Hungary AgEcon
Stauder, Marta.
During the past years the market share of trade chains has increased substantially in Hungarian food commerce. The concentration of food commerce and the increasing presence of international and national trade chains can be observed in Hungary as well. It is generally true that small and middle-sized food trading enterprises are not competitive compared to large trade chains. However, this fact does not mean that their reason for existence or their support is questionable. The former system of relations between food commerce and food industry has undergone radical changes due to the expansion of food chains. Due to the changes, requirements towards food industry have grown, food industry has to face fundamentally new mentality and concepts. In conclusion...

Reputations, Market Structure, and the Choice of Quality Assurance Systems in the Food Industry AgEcon
Carriquiry, Miguel A.; Babcock, Bruce A..
A repeated-purchases model is developed to explore the fundamental economic factors that lie behind the choice of different quality assurance systems and their associated degrees of stringency by firms. Differences in the quality discoverability of a sought-after attribute, market structure, attractiveness of a market, nature of reputations, and the value placed in the future are among the factors contributing to the implementation of widely diverse systems across participants in different markets. Close attention is paid to the role of reputations in providing the incentives for firms to deliver high-quality goods. We model three different scenarios— - monopoly, duopoly with firm-specific reputations, and duopoly with industry-wide reputations— - and...

REPUTATION, QUALITY OBSERVABILITY, AND THE CHOICE OF QUALITY ASSURANCE SYSTEMS AgEcon
Carriquiry, Miguel A.; Babcock, Bruce A..
Participants in a supply chain of agricultural value-added products face significant challenges. Many of the costly distinctive traits desired by consumers are difficult (if not impossible) to observe even after consumption. A complicating factor, addressed here, is that in some circumstances delivered quality can only be imperfectly learned and/or affected stochastically by producers. Hence, both symmetric and asymmetric informational imperfections may be present. In order for markets for these classes of goods to arise, firms touting the quality of the product need to be trusted. A repeated-purchases model is developed to explore the fundamental economic factors that lie behind the choice of different quality assurance systems and their associated...

A Consumer-oriented Study of the South African Beef Value Chain AgEcon
Labuschagne, Anita; Louw, Andre; Ndanga, Leah Z.B..
The South African beef industry, like many other South African supply chains, is challenged by the increased complexity and demand brought about by globalization, increased volumes and competition, shortage of skilled staff and pressures to meet changing customer needs. The power has shifted from the supply side to the consumer. The consumer has been empowered by greater knowledge. Consumer needs are changing. A combination of these two facts implies that not only the retailer, but also the supply chain as a whole must make sure that it is aligned to deliver customer value, in order to ensure sustainable competitiveness and survival, manage risks and ensure acceptable returns. Competition today is based on competing supply chains. The focus of this study...

Agri-food supply chains and sustainability-related issues: evidence from across the Scottish agri-food economy AgEcon
Leat, Philip M.K.; Lamprinopoulou-Kranis, Chrysa; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Kupiec-Teahan, Beata.
This paper examines the influence of agri-food supply chains on the sustainability-related activities and decisions of Scottish farmers, as well as the treatment of sustainability issues by food processors and retailers themselves. It is based on 8 whole chain case studies covering some of Scotland’s major agricultural products. The cases identify differing levels of understanding and activities related to sustainability, but widespread acknowledgement that sustainability involves the development of chains within which all parties can achieve acceptable profits. Indeed, collaborative supply chains, which seek improved economic performance, frequently assist environmental and social sustainability. The main drivers of sustainability are found to be the cost...

Dynamics of Price Transmission in the Presence of a Major Food Safety Shock: Impact of H5N1 Avian Influenza on the Turkish Poultry Sector AgEcon
Saghaian, Sayed H.; Ozertan, Gokhan; Spaulding, Aslihan D..
This article addresses the dynamic impact of the 2005 H5N1 avian influenza outbreak on the Turkish poultry sector. Contemporary time-series analyses with historical decomposition graphs are used to address differences in monthly price adjustments between market levels along the Turkish poultry supply channel. The empirical results show that price adjustments are asymmetric with respect to both speed and magnitude along the marketing channel. Results also reveal a differential impact of the exogenous shock on producers and retailers. The findings have critical efficiency and equity implications for the supply-chain participants.

EFEITO DO FAIR TRADE NA COOPERATVA DE AGRICULTORES FAMILIARES DE CAFÉ DE POÇO FUNDO, MG AgEcon
Oliveira, Renato Ferreira de; Araujo, Uajara Pessoa; Santos, Antonio Carlos dos.
Fair trade is a commercial practice that aims to help small farmers in underdeveloped countries through mechanisms that can modify the supply chain. This paper, through exploratory, quantitative and transversal research, tries to investigate this structuring effect of fair trade on the productive nodule of the chain, examining the cohesion caused by this intervention on a small Cooperative of Coffee Family Farmers (organic and conventional SAT-no agro toxic substances used in production) in Poço Fundo in the state of Minas Gerais. The social network and supply chain perspectives, suported by Granovetter’s embeddeness theory, were used to analyze the information surveyed. Although a high degree of cohesion was observed, there were also some hints of...

Consumer driven supply chains: the case of Dutch organic tomato CIGR Journal
Anastasiadis, Foivos; van Dam, Ynte.
Supply chain management refers to the efficient integration of various processes involved in turning resources into consumer products.  Effectiveness of the supply chain is more easily understood in terms of Value Chain Management, and the integration of processes that turn resources into consumer value.  The current paper reports two studies into the value chain of organic produce in The Netherlands.  The paper combines two different research approaches to study which consumer motives and values are the main drivers of organic consumption.  In a qualitative laddering (N=72) study, three distinct groups of motives were identified.  These motives are centred around hedonic, benevolent, and universalist values.  In a quantitative survey (N=1453), the...
