Within the SAFO network, the workpackage on standard development has focussed on the topic, on how and to what degree the EU-Regulations con-tribute to the objective of a high status of anima health and food safety in organic livestock production. Results and conclusions from the discussions at 5 SAFO workshops are presented. |

Ensilage of red clover results in lower concentrations of non-protein nitrogen compared to other forage legumes. It is assumed that the polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity in red clover is related to this effect. Therefore, a laboratory ensiling trial was carried out to quantify the changes in crude protein (CP) fractions during the ensiling process using the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System. At four cutting dates, fresh, wilted and ensiled herbage of three red clover genotypes and white clover grown in two systems (with and without mechanical stress) was sampled. The specific PPO activity was measured photometrically in fresh leaves of the plants. Concentrations of fraction A increased from 130-197 g/kg CP to 372-544 g/kg CP during the... |

Many growers of organic strawberry and raspberry have large losses in yield and reduced quality of their products because of insect damage. For many insects species pheromones and host plant volatiles are of major importance in mate finding and host plant location. In this project we want to extend our knowledge of these systems to develop effective control measures to control these pests in organic crops. The focus will be on the strawberry blossom weevil, the European tarnish plant bug and the raspberry beetle. |

Several studies have shown that changing from conventional to organic farming is an alternative to reduce negative impacts on the environment, for example nitrogen losses, reduced biodiversity and input of fossil energy per unit land and per unit product. In organic agriculture, as well, there is currently a trend towards specialized farming systems. To compensate for the lack of data on energy efficiency measured at farm scale, a comparison between three differently managed organic all-arable crop rotations and a typical rotation of typical regional N-intensive conventional farm was carried out over a two-year period at a highly productive site in northern Germany. Comparing the all-arable crop rotations, the organic systems had a 62 % lower output... |

A four year experiment is being carried out, at Ege University Department of Horticulture, in which three different pre-crops are tested under an organic management system as compared to fallow. The aim of the experiment is to identify the most suitable rotation program for organic vegetable production in Turkey. Vicia sativa (common vetch), Brassica oleracea var. italica (broccoli), Vicia faba ‘Sevilla’ (faba bean) and fallow are tested as preceding (winter) crops. During the experiment carried out between 2007 and 2009, the main crops were tomato (2007), zucchini (2008) and pepper (2009). Broccoli represented the farmers’ choice as a winter vegetable. Vetch (incorporated) and faba bean (partially harvested and incorporated) were selected as legumes well... |

Novel organic fungicides and elicitors against downy mildew on grapevines were evaluated on grapevine seedlings in a series of indoor screening experiments under controlled conditions and, if they have shown a good efficacy indoors, in a screening vineyard under field conditions. From 39 products tested under controlled conditions 10 were further examined under field conditions. All of the new products tested under field conditions showed at least partial efficacy. However, the efficacy was not good enough to protect grapevine plants sufficiently from downy mildew. For a complete re-placement of copper in plant protection against downy mildew on grapevine in organic agriculture, additional new products are needed. |

The effect of different sources of K and N on graded yields, dry matter, reducing sugars and quality of french fries and crisps, respectively were examined in two maincrop varieties (AGRIA and MARLEN). Fertilizers applied were cattle manure, potassium sulphate (PS), PS + grinded horn, grinded horn (GH) and a control. Results of two-factorial field experiments (2002-2004) on a loamy sand are presented. Cultivar and fertilizer had a significant effect on final yield, combined mineral K and organic N (PSGH) being the most efficient fertilizer with regard to graded yields for crisp (>40 mm) and french fries production (>50 mm). K content of tubers could be increased, but dry matter was lowered by most fertilizers, so that only the unfertilized plots... |

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) yield in tropical Africa remains below 1t/ha partly because most growers rarely use beneficial organic soil amendments on degraded tropical soils. Therefore, filed trials were conducted during the late cropping seasons (July – Nov.) of 2015 and 2016 on the organic research plots of the Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research, Nigeria (7o 23´ N, 3o 39´ E, altitude 139 m above sea level) the trials evaluated the agronomic response of five recently released soybean varieties (TGx 1448-2E, TGx 1440-1E, TGx 1740-2F, TGx 1987-62F and TGx 1835-10E) to the application of three commercial organic fertilizers (Aleshinloye Grade B, Organo-Farm and Gateway) and a control. The trials were laid out... |

The definition, characteristics and basic discipline of organic manor in China are discussed. Taking the planning of “Yuxi Manor” as an example, the designing for materials and energy circulation, organic production technical system, and quality system of the Manor are highlighted. ICS is introduced creatively into the planning for guaranteeing the organic integrity of the Manor. The study is referential for the construction of other organic manors. |

Experiment was conducted at 15 certified organic dairy farms in Eastern Finland during spring 2008. Farms were allocated to three balanced groups according annual milk yield, herd size and housing system. Three types of selenium (Se) supplementations: selenium yeast (SY), sodium selenite (SS) or their (50:50) combination (SYS) was used. Daily Se doses were adjusted according to milk yield basis (average 3 mg/d). Experimental model was 3 X 3 Latin square, consisting from 3 experiment periods. The length of each period was 28 days. RehuRaisio provided experimental feeds. In the end of each period bulk-tank milk samples were collected and analysed for Se at MTT Agrifood Research Finland. The Se supplementation form was crucial for milk Se concentration... |
