Healthy growth in mid-scale values based food chains Organic Eprints
Kvam, Gunn-Turid.
This paper is a literature review of studies of mid-scale food values based food chains and healthy growth processes in the organic food sector. By midscale values based food chains we mean productions that are growing out of the niche/small scale market into larger volumes and sales. Previous research have shown that niche market chains might have inherent problems in moving from niche to volume, while mainstream large-scale markets have inherent problems in securing and advancing organic values. A main hypothesis is that mid-scale value based chains are able to deal with these challenges because they are based on a different form of marketing logic and strategies than either small- or large scale chains. As a first step in analysis of the success of...

Krawutschke, Manuel; Weiher, Nina; Gierus, Martin; Thaysen, Johannes; Taube, Friedhelm.
Ensilage of red clover results in lower concentrations of non-protein nitrogen compared to other forage legumes. It is assumed that the polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity in red clover is related to this effect. Therefore, a laboratory ensiling trial was carried out to quantify the changes in crude protein (CP) fractions during the ensiling process using the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System. At four cutting dates, fresh, wilted and ensiled herbage of three red clover genotypes and white clover grown in two systems (with and without mechanical stress) was sampled. The specific PPO activity was measured photometrically in fresh leaves of the plants. Concentrations of fraction A increased from 130-197 g/kg CP to 372-544 g/kg CP during the...

SOFTPEST MULTITRAP - MANAGEMENT OF STRAWBERRY BLOSSOM WEEVIL AND EUROPEAN TARNISHED PLANT BUG IN ORGANIC STRAWBERRY AND RASPBERRY USING SEMIOCHEMICAL TRAPS Organic Eprints
Wibe, Atle; Cross, Jerry V.; Borg-Karlson, Anna-Karin; Hall, David R.; Trandem, Nina; Sigsgaard, Lene; Baroffio, Catherine; Ralle, Baiba; Fountain, Michelle T..
Many growers of organic strawberry and raspberry have large losses in yield and reduced quality of their products because of insect damage. For many insects species pheromones and host plant volatiles are of major importance in mate finding and host plant location. In this project we want to extend our knowledge of these systems to develop effective control measures to control these pests in organic crops. The focus will be on the strawberry blossom weevil, the European tarnish plant bug and the raspberry beetle.

Influence of transplanter modifications and cover crop mulches on the production of summer vegetables in conservation tillage Organic Eprints
Campiglia, Enio; Mancinelli , Roberto; Radicetti, Emanuele; Ferrari, Francesco.
The aim of this poster is to develop a vegetable transplanter that is capable of working in no-tillage conditions and in presence of organic mulches which cover the soil. The following requirements should be considered for built a transplanter able to work in no-tillage conditions: - An adequate structure and implements that can transplant under the most challenging conditions; - The possibility of placing vegetable seedlings in areas with high amounts of residues without disturbing the soil more than necessary; - The creation of a furrow for proper seedling placement; - Being able to cover the vegetable root system with soil in presence of a superficial mulch layer.

Energieeffizienz der Fruchtfolgen viehloser Ökobetriebe und eines konventionellen Ackerbaubetriebs in Schleswig-Holstein Organic Eprints
Loges, Ralf; Biernat, Lars; Taube, Friedhelm.
Several studies have shown that changing from conventional to organic farming is an alternative to reduce negative impacts on the environment, for example nitrogen losses, reduced biodiversity and input of fossil energy per unit land and per unit product. In organic agriculture, as well, there is currently a trend towards specialized farming systems. To compensate for the lack of data on energy efficiency measured at farm scale, a comparison between three differently managed organic all-arable crop rotations and a typical rotation of typical regional N-intensive conventional farm was carried out over a two-year period at a highly productive site in northern Germany. Comparing the all-arable crop rotations, the organic systems had a 62 % lower output...

Bilen, Emre; Nazik, Ceren Ayşe; Unal, Mehmet; Bteich, Marie Reine; Al-Bitar, Lina; Aksoy, Uygun.
A four year experiment is being carried out, at Ege University Department of Horticulture, in which three different pre-crops are tested under an organic management system as compared to fallow. The aim of the experiment is to identify the most suitable rotation program for organic vegetable production in Turkey. Vicia sativa (common vetch), Brassica oleracea var. italica (broccoli), Vicia faba ‘Sevilla’ (faba bean) and fallow are tested as preceding (winter) crops. During the experiment carried out between 2007 and 2009, the main crops were tomato (2007), zucchini (2008) and pepper (2009). Broccoli represented the farmers’ choice as a winter vegetable. Vetch (incorporated) and faba bean (partially harvested and incorporated) were selected as legumes well...

Investigations on vitamin B2 and B6 contents in organically produced cereal and grain legume varieties Organic Eprints
Witten, Stephanie; Aulrich, Karen.
The results indicate that the contents of B2 and B6 can possibly be influenced by genetic factors. However, the potential might be higher in grain legumes than in cereal grains. Investigations on B-vitamin contents in further feedstuffs like alfalfa, clover, or natural feed supplements are needed to re-evaluate the need of B-vitamin supplementation in organic diets.

Total N difference method and 15N isotope dilution methode - A comparative study on N-fixation Organic Eprints
Müller, Dr. Torsten; Thorup-Kristensen, Dr. Kristian.
In the study, the 15N fixation of a number of green manure crops were studied using either the 15N dilution technique, or the simple total N difference method. The results of the two methods were not very different, and the total N difference method seemed to give as good results as the more complicated and expencive 15N dillution method.

Efficacy testing of novel organic fungicides and elicitors: from the lab to the field Organic Eprints
Schaerer, Hans-Jakob; Amsler, Thomas; Thürig, Barbara; Tamm, Lucius.
Novel organic fungicides and elicitors against downy mildew on grapevines were evaluated on grapevine seedlings in a series of indoor screening experiments under controlled conditions and, if they have shown a good efficacy indoors, in a screening vineyard under field conditions. From 39 products tested under controlled conditions 10 were further examined under field conditions. All of the new products tested under field conditions showed at least partial efficacy. However, the efficacy was not good enough to protect grapevine plants sufficiently from downy mildew. For a complete re-placement of copper in plant protection against downy mildew on grapevine in organic agriculture, additional new products are needed.

Einfluss von Düngung und Sorte auf Ertrags- und Qualitätsparameter von Verarbeitungskartoffeln im Ökologischen Landbau Effect of fertilization and cultivar on yield and quality factors of potatoes for processing in organic farming Organic Eprints
Haase, Dipl.-Ing.agr. Thorsten; Schüler, Dr. Christian; Kölsch, Ing. Eberhard; Heß, Prof. Dr. Jürgen; Haase, Dr. Norbert U..
The effect of different sources of K and N on graded yields, dry matter, reducing sugars and quality of french fries and crisps, respectively were examined in two maincrop varieties (AGRIA and MARLEN). Fertilizers applied were cattle manure, potassium sulphate (PS), PS + grinded horn, grinded horn (GH) and a control. Results of two-factorial field experiments (2002-2004) on a loamy sand are presented. Cultivar and fertilizer had a significant effect on final yield, combined mineral K and organic N (PSGH) being the most efficient fertilizer with regard to graded yields for crisp (>40 mm) and french fries production (>50 mm). K content of tubers could be increased, but dry matter was lowered by most fertilizers, so that only the unfertilized plots...

Organic fertilizers improve the growth, seed quality and yield of newly released soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) varieties in the tropics Organic Eprints
Onyenali, Tobechi; Olowe, Victor; Fabunmi, Thomas; Adeniyi, Soretire.
Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) yield in tropical Africa remains below 1t/ha partly because most growers rarely use beneficial organic soil amendments on degraded tropical soils. Therefore, filed trials were conducted during the late cropping seasons (July – Nov.) of 2015 and 2016 on the organic research plots of the Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research, Nigeria (7o 23´ N, 3o 39´ E, altitude 139 m above sea level) the trials evaluated the agronomic response of five recently released soybean varieties (TGx 1448-2E, TGx 1440-1E, TGx 1740-2F, TGx 1987-62F and TGx 1835-10E) to the application of three commercial organic fertilizers (Aleshinloye Grade B, Organo-Farm and Gateway) and a control. Fertilizer placement and competitive ability of spring barley varieties - Results from two years of organic field trials Organic Eprints
Madsen, K.H.; Bertelsen, I.; Askegaard, M..
Results from two years of field trial in organic spring barley showed a significantly higher grain yield per hectare in a competitive variety compared to a variety with lower competitive ability. Furthermore fertilizer placement resulted in a significantly higher grain yield than the broadcasted fertilizer application. The experiments furhermore, indicate, that combining fertilizer placement and growing a competitive spring barley variety will have mostly additive effect on the expected grain yield per hectare.

Refining proteins from green crops for high quality feed products for monogastricanimals and dairy cows Organic Eprints
Lübeck, Mette.
Green biorefinery concepts have the potential to become a suitable solution for production of organic protein-rich feeds from green crops. Different green crops such as alfalfa, red clover and clover grasses are studied as possible feedstocks for the development of an organic biorefinery system with refined proteins, ensiled press cake to be used as cattle feed and residual juice with potentials for fermentation of amino acids, lactic acid or other uses. A process was developed by which screw pressed juice from the freshly harvested crop was used for lactic acid fermentation to decrease the pH and precipitate proteins. These refined proteins have a favourable amino acid content and are comparable with soy proteins, especially for poultry where methionine...

Nitrogen use efficiency of cereals in arable organic farming Organic Eprints
Olesen, Jørgen E.; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Askegaard, Margrethe.
The effect of nitrogen (N) supply and weeds on grain yield of spring barley, winter wheat and winter rye was investigated from 1997 to 2004 in an organic farming crop rotation experiment in Denmark on three soil types varying from coarse sand to sandy loam. Two experimental factors were included in the experiment in a factorial design: 1) catch crop (with and without), and 2) manure (with and without). The apparent recovery efficiency of N in grains (nitrogen use efficiency, NUE) from NH4-N in applied manure varied from 29 to 38% in spring barley and from 23 to 44% in winter cereals. The NUE of above-ground N in catch crops sampled in November prior to the spring barley varied from 16 to 52% with the largest value on the coarse sandy soil and the smallest...
