Straw management by incorporation into the soils is an alternative method to avoid straw burning before land preparation. The experiment was conducted at Pathum Thani Rice Research Center and Suphan Buri Rice Research Center during 2006-2007. It was comprised of 3 trials, i.e., effect of amount of straw incorporated into soils to rice growth and yield, effect of straw management methods to rice growth and yield, and effect of straw incorporation period to rice growth and yield. The results showed that straw incorporation rate of 0-800 kg/rai did not affect early growth stage (number of plants/m2 at 15 days after planting) and yield. Number of plants/m2 at 15 days after planting was decreased by straw incorporation at the rate of 1,200-1,600 kg/rai whereas...

Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix), (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil Zoologia
Ambrósio,Ângela Maria; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Agostinho,Ângelo Antônio.
Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) was determined. Data were collected from December 1983 to November 1984 and from April 1997 to March 1998 in the Itaipu Reservoir. To evaluate reading consistency, it was analyzed the coefficient of variation of the total length for each annulus observed in the otoliths. Through marginal increment analysis, it was determined that the annuli formed annually (April) indicating that otoliths may be used in the study of age and growth of the species. Food supply was considered the main factor affecting growth and annuli formation in both periods. Back-calculated data were used to assess if the Rosa Lee phenomenon, commom in selective samples like commercial fishing, occured....

Crescimento de Schizodon Intermedius Garavello & Britski (Ostheichthyes, Anostomidae) do Rio Tibagi (Sertanópolis, Paraná) Zoologia
Orsi,Mário Luís; Shibatta,Oscar Akio.
This work consists of age, growth, and circuli formation period determination and the relation of reproduction, temperature, and pluviosity on the growth of S. intermedius Garavello & Britski, 1990. The growth curve was adjusted by the Bertalanfy's expression and the relationship between weight and size was made by the minimum square method to determine the conditioning factor. Gonadossomatic index (IGS) was used to study the reproduction. The assintotic values for length were 33,94 cm and 44,81 cm for males and females, respectively. The circulus were formed annually and the growth was slow and the maximum age was determined to be nine years. The formation of the circuli was influenced by the reproduction, probably allied to other abiotic factors...

Estudo populacional do camarão-rosa Penaeus Paulensis pérez farfante (natantia, penaeidae) na Lagoa da Conceiçáo, Santa Catarina, Brasil Zoologia
Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Verani,José Roberto.
In the time period between May/92 to April/93, 2693 (1243 males and 1450 females) specimens of Penaeus paulensis Pérez Farfante, 1967 were collected. The shrimps were captured by night using a hand net in äreas between 30 to 150 cm deep. The abundance of P. paulensis is regulated mainly by the temperature, the summer being the season of greater profusion. The major recruiting period takes place in the Spring with shrimps measuring between 1,0 to 3,0 cm and approximately 2,0 months old. The population reaches the pre-adult in the Fall-Winter period with average length between 8,8 cm (females) and 9,3 cm (males). The migration to the ocean occurs during the Winter. The artisanal fishing in the Conceição Lake is predatory, acting upon the young and pre-adult...

Size distribution of the jack Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Linnaeus) (Actinopterygii, Carangidae) in a tropical bay at Southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Costa,Marcus R. da; Albieri,Rafael J.; Araújo,Francisco G..
Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Linnaeus, 1766) is the most abundant representant of the Carangidae family in the Sepetiba bay, a c.a. 450 km² semi-closed coastal area in the Southeastern Brazil. We analyze fish (number, weight and size) and environmental data to assess the part of life history of this species in tropical embayment environments. Fish sampling were taken in triplicates by monthly bottom trawls, in three bay zones (inner, middle and outer), defined according to a spatial gradient of depth and salinity. Juveniles were firstly caught in the inner bay zone measuring 30-90 mm total length - TL (mode = 60 mm TL) in Spring. Then they move toward the middle and outermost part of the bay in Summer-Autumn (120-180 mm TL), following a seaward migration to...

Development and reproduction in Bulimulus tenuissimus (Mollusca: Bulimulidae) in laboratory Zoologia
Silva,Lidiane C.; Meireles,Liliane M. O.; Junqueira,Flávia O.; Bessa,Elisabeth C. A..
Bulimulus tenuissimus (d'Orbigny, 1835) is a land snail of parasitological importance with a poorly understood biology. The goal of this laboratory study was to determine development and reproductive patterns in B. tenuissimus. Recently hatched individuals in seven groups of 10 were maintained in the laboratory for two years. To test for self-fertilization, 73 additional individuals were isolated. After 180 days the isolated snails showed no signs of reproduction. Subsequently, 30 of these snails were paired to test fertility. We noted the date and time of egg-laying, the number of eggs produced, the number of egg-layings per individual, the incubation period and hatch success. This species shows indeterminate growth. Individuals that were maintained with...

Crescimento e reprodução de Hyale media Dana (Amphipoda, Gammaridae, Hyalidae) associada à Sargassum cymosum C. Agardh Zoologia
Leite,Fosca Pedini Pereira.
The post-marsupial growth, sexual differentiation, fecundity and reproductive biology of Hyale media Dana, 1853 living on Sargassum cymosum C. Agardh, 1820 are described. The growth was continuous througth 12 stages for males and 9 for females. The sexual differentiation occours at 2th or 3th moult and was demonstrated by the enlargment of the gnatopod II propod. Number of eggs increased with the female head length. Observations of courtship behavior, incubation, moult processes, emergence of juveniles and brood caracteristics were made. The precopula courtship continued for two days, the eggs were incubated for six days and the juveniles, that stay until three days in the marsupium, moult every day.

Maturation and growth curves of Macrobrachium Carcinus (Linnaeus) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Palaemonidae) from Ribeira de Iguape River, southern Brazil Zoologia
Valenti,Wagner C; Mello,Jeanette de T.C. de; Lobão,Vera L.
In this paper, female Macrobrachium carcinus (Linnaeus, 1758) maturation curve, weight/length relationship, length and weight growth curves were studied. Prawns were captured, by traps, in Ribeira de Iguape river (24ºS and 47ºW), southern Brazil. There were used 207 females. It was observed that M. carcinus presents several spawnings during its life cycle and reproductive period goes on, at least till six years old. Weight/length relationship can be represented for the equation W = 8.73 E-3 L3.28. Expressions obtained for length and weight growth curves are Lt = 21 .0 (1-e-0493t) and Wt= 190 (1-e-0493t)3.28. respectively. A symptotic maximum length and asymptotic maximum weight are nearly attained at six and eight years old, respectively.
