Vertical distribution of epiphytic bryophytes in Atlantic Forest fragments in northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Hermeson Cassiano de; Oliveira,Sylvia Mota de.
ABSTRACT The microclimatic gradient established from the forest understory to the canopy provides a range of different conditions for the establishment of bryophytes along the height of a tree. We investigated epiphytic bryophyte communities of four fragments of Atlantic Forest with the aim of describing their vertical zonation and assessing differentiation among the communities of the different fragments. In each fragment, five host trees were selected from which bryophyte samples were collected in four height zones from the base to the canopy. Furthermore, 10 plots were demarcated in each fragment where bryophytes were collected from the understory. In total, 114 bryophyte species were found on the 20 sampled phorophytes, plus an additional 51 species in...

Unraveling algae and cyanobacteria biodiversity in bromeliad phytotelmata in different vegetation formations in Bahia State, Northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Ramos,Geraldo José Peixoto; Santana,Lucineide Maria; Medina,Anderson Matos; Bicudo,Carlos Eduardo de Mattos; Branco,Luis Henrique Zanini; Moura,Carlos Wallace do Nascimento.
ABSTRACT Knowledge of algal and cyanobacterial diversity of phytotelmata remains poorly-known, especially for bromeliads from different vegetation formations. We investigated the microalgae communities of four species of tank bromeliads from different vegetation formations in Bahia State, Northeast Brazil, highlighting the composition, richness and diversity of taxa. Sampling of water stored in bromeliads was carried out quarterly between 2014 and 2016, and abiotic variables and morphometric attributes of bromeliads were measured. A total of 89 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria were recorded for the four bromeliad species studied. The microalgae communities of the phytotelmata varied among vegetation formations, with one tank bromeliad, Alcantarea nahoumii,...

Reproductive morphology and phenological aspects of one morphological variant of Hypnea pseudomusciformis (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) Acta Botanica
Jesus,Priscila Barreto de; Pestana,Edilene Maria dos Santos; Affe,Helen Michelle de Jesus; Rocha,Diogo Souza Bezerra; Caires,Taiara Aguiar; Nunes,José Marcos de Castro; Schnadelbach,Alessandra Selbach.
ABSTRACT Hypnea pseudomusciformis was recently described from South America, and has three morphological variants: “musciformis”, “nigrescens”, and “valentiae”. Information on the biology of these variants may help to explain this species’ wide morphological variation despite the absence of genetic divergence among variants. More morphological and ecological data has accumulated on the “musciformis” variant occurring on the Brazilian coast than for the others. In this study, we described the reproductive morphology of a tropical “nigrescens” population and investigated its phenology to provide crucial biological information about this taxon, and perhaps also assist in answering questions about the systematics of H. pseudomusciformis variants. The...

Communities of Mucorales (phylum Mucoromycota) in different ecosystems of the Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Lima,Diogo Xavier; Souza-Motta,Cristina Maria; Lima,Catarina Letícia Ferreira de; Souza,Carlos Alberto Fragoso de; Ribeiro,Jonathan Ramos; Santiago,André Luiz Cabral Monteiro de Azevedo.
ABSTRACT As primary decomposers of organic matter, mucoralean fungi have an important ecological role in edaphic systems in the Atlantic Forest. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding how communities of Mucorales are structured in soils of Atlantic Forest areas, and whether these communities are influenced by edaphic attributes in this domain. Thus, the current study aimed to understand the influence of edaphic attributes linked to species richness, abundance and composition of Mucorales in dense ombrophilous forest, ‘tabuleiro’ forest, sandbank and mangrove ecosystems located in Pernambuco, Brazil. Altogether, twenty-three taxa, including seven new records, were reported from soil samples from the ecosystems. Species composition was similar among the...

Distribution patterns of ferns and lycophytes in the Coastal Region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Acta Botanica
Gonzatti,Felipe; Machado,Letícia; Windisch,Paulo Günter.
ABSTRACT A survey of ferns and lycophytes of the Coastal Region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (CRRS) was performed based on field work and collections of the main regional herbaria. The following were evaluated for each species: preferential habits (terrestrial, epiphytic or aquatic), geographic distribution patterns and habitats (forest, grassland, and wetland). The occurrence of a latitudinal gradient in diversity was tested over five latitudinal ranges using the Sørensen Similarity Index. A total of 17 lycophyte and 206 fern species representing 28 families was found between the latitudes of 29° and 34°S. Exclusively terrestrial species were predominant (162), with the majority (113) exhibiting wide Neotropical distributions, followed by species...

The study of fractals among ecologists - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i1.7701 Biological Sciences
Mormul, Roger Paulo; Universidade Estadual de Maringá - UEM; Padial, André Andrian; Universidade Federal de Goiás & Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Mato Grosso do Sul.
Fractals seemed to have permeated most scientific fields, including ecology. In fact, biodiversity and ecological processes are affected by spatial complexity, and fractals can help understand patterns at multiple scales. In this paper we evaluated the main quantitative trends and the profile of ecology publications using fractals. Publications about fractals in Ecology experienced a high increase in the last two decades, and most articles were published in highly visible ecology journals. However, studies were authored mainly by US scientists, and researchers from developing countries had a minor contribution. In addition, studies were highly biased towards terrestrial environments, and empirical approaches were preferred.

Variation in quantitative vessel element features of Juglans regia wood in the western black sea region of Turkey Agrociencia
Yaman,Barbaros.
Variations in quantitative vessel element characters of Juglans regia L. wood were studied in relation to altitude and growth-ring width. Multiple regression analysis using altitude and growth-ring width as independent variables were performed. Significant correlations were obtained for tangential vessel and radial vessel diameter (p< 0.001), vulnerability ratio and xeromorphy ratio (p<0.01), and for the number of vessels per group (p<0.05). Vessel frequency is not correlated with independent variables. Non-anatomical factors (altitude and growth-ring width) explain 40.4-80.4% of variation for dependent variables.
