For Every Law, a Loophole: Flexibility in the Menu of Spanish Business Forms, 1886-1936 AgEcon
Guinnane, Timothy W.; Marrinez Rodriguez, Susana.
The Spanish business code allowed firms great flexibility in their organizational form in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Until 1920, firms had the same basic choices as in France and some other European countries, namely, the corporation, the ordinary partnership, or the limited partnership. But Spanish law was unusually flexible, allowing firms to adapt the corporation especially to the needs of its owners. Starting in 1920 Spanish firms could also organize as a Sociedad de Responsabilidad Limitada (SRL), a form similar to the German GmbH or the British Private Limited Company (PLC). But some firms had already adopted the form prior to 1920. The Spanish coded lacked the principle of “numerus clauses” that is central to many areas of law....

Tarrifs And The Canadian Rapeseed Industry AgEcon
Griffith, Garry R.; Meilke, Karl D..
Rapeseed, in terms of farm value, is the second most important crop grown in Canada. The existence of tariffs on rapeseed oil, in the major import markets of the EC and Japan, have led many to believe that the elimination of these tariffs would result in substantial benefits for Canada. This paper presents empirical evidence on the impacts of removing the EC and Japenese tariffs on rapeseed and soybean oil, both seperately and jointly. In general, Canada gains from rapeseed oil tariff reductions and loses from soybean oil tariff cuts. Canada also gains if the tariff is removed on both commodities in Japan but loses if both tariffs are reduced in the EC.

Rural, Suburban and Urban Single Mothers' AFDC and FSP Participation and Labor Supply: Lessons for Welfare Reform AgEcon
Ranney, Christine K..
Since passage of the Personal Responsibility and Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA), states have the responsibility of developing and implementing their own Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) programs to operate in tandem with the Federal Food Stamp Program (FSP). The context for this welfare reform included a booming economy and broad public perception that welfare programs severely reduce the work effort of recipients. This study focuses on a period when the economy was in recession and investigates how the old cash welfare program, AFDC, and the FSP affected labor supply (weekly hours of work) decisions for single mothers, the majority of welfare recipients, across the rural-urban continuum. The central question is how the labor supply of...

Price Transmission and Price Integration in Food Retail Markets: The Case of Kinshasa AgEcon
Minten, Bart; Kyle, Steven C..
Integration of commodity markets in developing countries has received considerable attention because price integration is perceived to be central to the success of food and agricultural policies. Price integration tests are performed in retail markets in Kinshasa (Zaire), i.e. between commodities, among retail markets, and between the wholesale and retail market level. Price transmission is measured by incorporating the co-integration concept into the classical long-run and shon-run market integration test. It is shown that although wholesale prices are input prices for retailers, they lack shon-run integration with retail prices. Differences exist between retail markets which do not reflect services or transponation costs. It is hypothesized that this is...

Rowles, Kristin.
Apple processors are an important link in the marketing chain from apple growers to consumers, and their perspective is critical in understanding the industry’s situation and projecting the industry’s future. This paper reports the results of a survey of Northeastern U.S. apple processors. The survey was conducted to provide a snapshot of current strategic issues in the industry, to assess the industry’s strengths and weaknesses, to identify opportunities and threats, to forecast future trends, and to provide background data for additional research in this industry. Effects of Housing Costs and Home Sales on Local Government Revenues and Services AgEcon
Allee, David J..
The subtitle of this paper should be " How recession and federal devolution have caused local governments to cut services and raise property taxes --now, what should be done in response to the resulting clamor for local government consolidation?" Housing drives local government services. Home sales represent opportunities for more income and more costs. Intergovernmental competition for tax base and the role of state and federal aid to provide equity between jurisdictions are central to the quality of the results. Recent cuts in sales taxes, plus reductions in state and federal assistance are transmitted to the voters through increases in the property tax. This has produced a reaction -consolidate! But that is advice urged and largely ignored since Woodrow...

The Sophistication and Diversification of the African Agricultural Sector: A Product Space Approach AgEcon
Badibanga, Thaddee Mutumba; Ulimwengu, John M..
We use the concept of the product space to analyze the key features of the transformation process in Africa with a focus on the agricultural sector. Between 1962 and 2008, we find that both specialization and diversification occur for the overall economy and across sectors. Our findings also confirm that the transformation of the African economy is driven primarily by the increasing specialization of nonagricultural exports. However, the transformation process is still moving more slowly than that of an emerging economy such as Brazil. The index of specialization of agricultural exports grew at a modest annual rate of 2.1 percent between 1962 and 2008, compared to 5.0 percent for nonagricultural exports and 4.1 percent for the overall economy. Although...

Measuring Hicksian Welfare Changes from Marshallian Demand Functions AgEcon
Dumagan, Jesus C.; Mount, Timothy D..
A problem persists in measuring the welfare effects of simultaneous price and income changes because the Hicksian compensating variation (CV) and equivalent variation (EV), while unique, are based on unobservable (Hicksian) demand functions, and observable (Marshallian) demand functions do not necessarily yield a unique Marshallian consumer's surplus (CS). This paper proposes a solution by a Taylor series expansion of the expenditure function to approximate CV and EV by way of the Slutsky equation to transform Hicksian price effects into Marshallian price and income effects. The procedure is contrasted with McKenzie's "money metric" (MM) measure derived from a Taylor series expansion of the indirect utility function. MM requires a crucial assumption about...

Dairy Farm Management Business Summary: New York State, 2001 AgEcon
Knoblauch, Wayne A.; Putnam, Linda D.; Karszes, Jason.
Business and financial records for 2001 from 228 New York dairy farm businesses are summarized and analyzed. This analysis demonstrates the use of cash accounting with accrual adjustments to measure farm profitability, financial performance, and costs of producing milk. Traditional methods of analyzing dairy farm businesses are combined with evaluation techniques that show the relationship between good management performance and financial success. The farms in the project averaged 277 cows per farm and 21,762 pounds of milk sold per cow, which represent above average size and management level for New York dairy farms. Net farm income excluding appreciation, which is the return to the operator's labor, management, capital, and other unpaid family labor,...
