Development of a water recirculating system for bullfrog production: technological innovation for small farmers Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Mello,Sílvia Conceição Reis Pereira; Oliveira,Roberto Rodrigues de; Pereira,Marcelo Maia; Rodrigues,Eliane; Silva,Willian Nascimento; Seixas Filho,José Teixeira de.
ABSTRACT Despite the technological progress in frog farming, issues related to the environment, biosafety, and the use of technologies that minimise environmental impacts are frequently neglected by farmers. With the goal of developing a low-cost technology for reuse and preservation of water quality, an anaerobic filtering system combined with an aerobic filtering system was implemented in the grow-out sector in the Frog Culture Research Unit at Fundação Instituto de Pesca do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FIPERJ). The filtering system received the effluent from six pens of frogs that were populated with 362 frogs in different development phases. The efficiency of the filtering system was evaluated by an analysis of the water before and after passing through...

Management strategies of Eremanthus erythropappus (DC.) MacLeish under different initial spacing Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Scolforo,José Roberto Soares; Altoe,Thiza Falqueto; Scolforo,Henrique Ferraco; Mello,Jose Marcio de; Silva,Charles Plinio Castro e; Ferraz Filho,Antonio Carlos.
ABSTRACT Eremanthus erythropappus, commonly known as candeia, is an income-generating tree native to Brazil. This is due to the high durability of its wood and its essential oil containing the active component alpha bisabolol. Despite this economic potential, until the early 2000's no studies existed to explore the sustainable management in areas in which the species naturally occurs or for establishing commercial plantations. This study proposes new management strategies based on an individual tree model, and evaluates the growth behavior of candeia trees planted in different spacing. The experiment was installed in March 2002, in Carrancas municipality, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The experimental area was divided into 4 blocks with 4 different spacings...

Evaluation of neem-based nanoformulations as alternative to control fall armyworm Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Giongo,Angelina Maria Marcomini; Vendramim,José Djair; Forim,Moacir Rossi.
ABSTRACT Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) based insecticides are efficient for the control of various pest species, but their low residual effect and the lack of standardized formulations are problems for field use. Nanoformulations of neem in colloidal suspension or powder, containing the polymers poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL), poly (β-hidroxibutirate) (PHB) or poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), in capsules or spheres, were developed in order to reduce biodegradation of the active neem compounds and improve their residual effect. Corn leaves treated with the nanoformulations were offered to first instar larvae of fall armyworm during 10 days, observing mortality and larval weight and comparing it to a commercial neem oil and negative controls. The...

Pelegrino,Marcelo Henrique Procópio; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Elidiane da; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Existing soil maps (legacy data) associated with digital mapping techniques are alternatives to obtain information at lower costs, however, tests are required to do it more efficiently. This study had as objectives to compare different methods to extract information from detailed scale soil maps using decision trees for mapping soil classes at two watersheds in Minas Gerais, validate these maps in the field and use the best method to extrapolate information to larger areas, also validating these maps of larger areas. Detailed soil maps of Vista Bela creek (VBW) and Marcela creek (MCW) watersheds were used as source of information. Seven methods to extract information from maps were compared: the whole polygon, eliminating 20 and 40 m from the...

Population dynamics and spatial distribution of Abaris basistriata Chaudoir, 1873 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Martins,Ivan Carlos Fernandes; Cividanes,Francisco Jorge; Barbosa,José Carlos; Lima Junior,Joaquim Alves de; Campos,Lourival Dias.
ABSTRACT Abaris basistriata, a beetle species dominant in agroecosystems and natural habitats, may benefit from the establishment of nearby refuge areas or crop field centers. To confirm this hypothesis, we analyzed the spatial distribution of the species and verified the population dynamics of this predator in a soybean/corn rotation crop and a central refuge area. The 1-ha experimental area was divided in half by a range of herbaceous plants (2 m in width and 80 m in length). Beetle samples were collected using pitfall traps every fortnight during the in-season and every month during the off-season (a total of 27 sampling occurrences). Population fluctuation was analyzed by correlating the total number of specimens with plant phenology. We used multiple...

Long-term phosphate fertilization, mycorrhizal inoculation and historical land use influence on soybean growth and P uptake Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Motta,Paulo Emílio Ferreira da; Siqueira,José Oswaldo; Ribeiro,Bruno Teixeira; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Phosphorus is a key-nutrient in the fertility management of highly weathered tropical soils. So, this work was carried out with the objective of evaluating the influence of the interaction between P doses, mycorrhizal inoculation and historical land use on soybean growth and P uptake in five Latosols (Oxisols) with contrasting chemical, physical and mineralogical properties under a continuous long-term phosphate fertilization (more than 15 years). The plants were cultivated in 4.5L-plastic pots containing 4 kg of soil in a completely randomized design, four replications and 2x2x2 factorial scheme with two P doses; and with or without mycorrhizal inoculation; and soils cultivated for long periods and non-cultivated (under native vegetation). There...

Forage mass and morphological composition of Marandu palisade grass pasture under rest periods Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Anjos,Albert José dos; Gomide,Carlos Augusto de Miranda; Ribeiro,Karina Guimarães; Madeiro,Afrânio Silva; Morenz,Mirton José Frota; Paciullo,Domingos Sávio Campos.
ABSTRACT An evaluation of productive potential is not the only factor used to determine grazing management efficiency; it is also necessary to know the structural characteristics of the canopy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of two management styles on Marandu palisade grass pastures under rotational stocking with respect to the herbage mass, morphological composition, and structural characteristics of the pasture. The treatments under consideration were a) a fixed rest period of 30 days (RP30) or b) a rest period based on the time necessary for the canopy to reach 95% light interception (LI95). The experimental design was a completely randomized block with two blocks and three replicates within the blocks. Animals were placed in...

Iron oxides and organic matter on soil phosphorus availability Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Fink,Jessé Rodrigo; Inda,Alberto Vasconcellos; Tiecher,Tales; Barrón,Vidal.
ABSTRACT Continuous crop expansion has led to a growing demand for phosphate fertilizers. A sound knowledge of the dynamics of phosphorus, and its interaction with iron oxides and organic matter, can be useful to develop effective strategies for sustainable management, especially in a scenario of increasing shortage of mineral phosphate resources. In this paper, we review the relationship of phosphate to iron oxides and organic matter, and its effect on phosphorus availability. Crops typically obtain phosphate from weathered minerals and dissolved fertilizers. However, the amount of phosphorus present in the soil solution depends on the extent to which it is adsorbed or desorbed by iron oxides, which may be influenced by interactions with organic matter....
