Eutrophication in a tropical pond: Understanding the bacterioplankton and phytoplankton dynamics during a vibriosis outbreak using flow cytometric analyses ArchiMer
Lucas, Ronan; Courties, C.; Herbland, Alain; Goulletquer, Philippe; Marteau, Anne-laure; Lemonnier, Hugues.
In tropical shrimp ponds, the increasing of feed input, concomitantly with the stocking shrimp biomass, induces an eutrophication of the ecosystem. Although difficult to maintain, its stability is required to guarantee the success of the culture. A 110-day period of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton stock and dynamics in an earthen pond (1.2 ha area, 1 m depth) was monitored using flow cytometry to provide baseline information on community characteristics and ecosystem instability. Seven autotrophic cell types were identified over the whole sampling period. Prokaryotic cells included Synechococcus sp., a group named UNK which presented an atypical new flow cytometric signature and picoeukaryotes (PEUK). Nanophytoplankton cells were represented by 4...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Goulletquer, Philippe.

Razet, Daniel; Faury, Nicole; Soletchnik, Patrick; Geairon, Philippe; Le Moine, Olivier; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Monitoring hydrology is an essential part of studying an ecosystem such as the Marennes-Oléron Bay. Since 1977, bimonthly samples have been taken from five stations in the bay. These samples provide important information on physical characteristics (temperature, oxygen, salinity), nutrients (NH4, NO3, NO2, SiO3, PO4) and particulate matter composition (seston, chlorophyll a and pheophytin).

Goulletquer, Philippe; Nedhif, Mohamed; Heral, Maurice.
The complete Manila clam's breeding cycle (Ruditapes philippinarum ) in oysters ponds (claires) permits to obtain a length of 25 mm after 1 year with a density range of 200 animals/m2 . As the primary production is restricted, the breeding biomass during the second year is limited to 500 g.m2 corresponding to a density between 30 to 50 clams..m-2. For an increase of the production it is necessary to extend the cultivated area to the tida1 bottom of the Bay of Marennes-Oleron. It appears that the man tidal level between + 2 and + 2.5 15 necessary with a density range of 200.m-2 to reach, the market size nine months later. The harvest sould be done before winter time to avoid a large 1055 of the flesh which can cause high levels of mortality.

Martin, Jean-louis; Haure, Joel; Thebault, Anne; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The evaluation of the ecological and economical consequences of the hydrocarbon pollution of the Erika implies the setting up of monitorings, analysis and experiments in the short, medium and long term. Among the consequences to be evaluated, a great deal of attention has to be paid to the direct impact on the biology and production performances of the main shellfish species as about 30% of the national production (around 130,000 tons of oysters and 60,000 tons of mussels per year) is cultivated in the impacted area. The main difficulty in evaluating the effects of the contaminants on a distinct part of the ecosystem which is mostly dominated by a cultured population dwells in the different approaches to set up as well as the variability of the answers...

Mussel (Mytilus edulis) culture management along the Normandy coastline (France) : stock assessment and growth monitoring ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Joly, Jean-pierre; Le Gagneur, Eric; Ruelle, Francois.
The Normandy region is presently a leading shellfish rearing area in France yielding 35,000 metric tons of oysters C. gigas and Il,000 metric tons of mussels M. edulis on a yearly basis. Preliminary studies were initiated in 1989, 1991 and 1992 to develop the sampling strategy for cultured mussel stock assessment. Comprehensive mussel stock assessment and concomitant growth monitoring were carried out in 1993 to study mussel population and optimize overall s1l1ellfish culture management. A three-stage cluster sampling strategy combined with stratification was tested on the 278 kms 'bouchot' type culture with a sampling effort of 275 units. Stratification was based upon two criteria including geographical sector and tidal level. Overall biomass was...

History, Status, and Future of Oyster Culture in France ArchiMer
Buestel, Dominique; Ropert, Michel; Prou, Jean; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The history of French oyster culture consists of a succession of developmental phases using different species, followed by collapses caused by diseases. The indigenous species Ostrea edulis was replaced first with Crassostrea angulata, then C. gigas. France is now the top producer and consumer of oysters in Europe, producing around 120,000 t of the cupped oyster C. gigas annually, and an additional 1500 t of the flat oyster O. edulis. Cupped oysters are produced all along the French coast from natural and hatchery spat. Various structures are used to collect spat from the wild. After a growing-on period, oysters are Cultivated by three main methods: (1) on-bottom culture in the intertidal zone or in deep water, (2) off-bottom culture in plastic mesh bags...

Decline of oyster production in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay: Causes and perspectives ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Rothschild, Brian J .; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The historical landings of the oyster production are described for the Maryland part of the Chesapeake Bay. The different trends are analysed concurently with the main events and management strategies which occured on the bay. Three main periods are identified : - the greatest fishery from 1840 to 1890 with a large overfishing and the destruction of the oyster habitat caused by the oyster gears, - the decrease and stable landings from 1900 to 1980 due to the failure of the reseeding plan connected to the heavy sedimentation and the anoxic summer conditions, - the large decrease of the production (1981-1988) caused by high mortalities related to diseases (MSX and Perkinsus marinus) prédation and management practices. Alternative strategies for restoration...

A population of Pacific ovsters, Crassostrea gigas, infected with a Chlamydia-like procaryote was reared to compare infection trends under three different feeding conditions: a starved condition, an intermediate condition with a diet of Skeletonema costatllm, and a mixed algal diet. Several physiological and pathological criteriJ: presence of gill abnormality; microscopic examination, basophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions, Feulgen reaction; condition index, filtration, food consumptiQn; fecal production and respiration were used to compare the various modalities one month after the initiation of the experiment. The Irodality of starved oysters showed reduce physiological performances in terms of scope for growth and condition index compared to oysters...

Evaluation of oyster sampling efficiency of patent tongs and an oyster dredge ArchiMer
Chai, Ai-ling; Homer, Mark; Tsai, Chu-fa; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Sampling efficiency of two oyster fishing gears, patent tongs and an oyster dredge, were compared in reference to diver-harvested quadrats in Chesapeake Bay, which supports important harvests of eastern oyster Crassosrrea virginica. Mean densities of spat (0$35 mm), small oysters (>35 mm to 75 mm), marketable oysters (>75 mm), and all oysters (three size-groups combined) estimated from patent tong samples were not significantly different from those derived from diver-harvested quadrat samples. In contrast, the densities estimated from dredge samples were low, only 2-32% of the diver estimates. Accordingly, patent tongs are recommended as the sampling gear for estimating eastern oyster stock abundance in the Maryland portion of Chesapeake Bay.

Grizel, Henri; Renault, Tristan; Cochennec, Nathalie; Tige, Gilbert; Audic, Guylaine; Pichot, Yves; Chollet, Bruno; Goulletquer, Philippe; Soletchnik, Patrick; Geairon, Philippe; Prou, Jean.

Comparative analysis of oxygen consumption rates between cupped oyster spat of Crassostrea gigas of French, Japanese, Spanish and Taiwanese origins ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Wolowicz, Maciej; Latala, Adam; Geairon, Philippe; Huvet, Arnaud; Boudry, Pierre.
Respiration rates of various geographical strains of Crassostrea gigas were compared to assess the respiratory expenditure as a physiological indicator of catabolism (cost of maintenance). Parental oysters, sampled in France (Marennes-Oleron), Japan (Hiroshima), Taiwan (Tunkang) and Spain (Cadix), were differentiated by both their geographic origin and by mitochondrial DNA markers, allowing the distinction between the two closely related taxa Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata. After reproduction of these parental oysters, respiration rates of spat of each strain, reared under common controlled conditions, were individually estimated at 20 degrees C by using a volumetric microrespirometer. Our results demonstrated that physiological variability...

Since 1988, seasonal, chronic mortality (up to 30-40 %) has been occurring at oyster farms in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, namely at the Ronce and Perquis sand flats. The particular geographic position on the southern part of the bay, between the Seudre River and the Maumusson Strait, confers a relative specificity to these oyster farming areas. Production in this area is on the order of 8,000 to 10,000 t of the 30,000 t of oysters produced annually in the Bay. Although limited in surface area (180 ha out of a total of 4,500 ha), this high proportion of production can be attributed to the fact that this zone is mostly dedicated to the finishing process before commercialisation. Due to its economic importance, oyster farming is vital for local businesses.
