On a new species of Uca from the West Indian region (Crustacea, Brachyura, Ocypodidae) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
A paper on the Ocypodid crabs of the Netherlands Antilles, which is now in preparation, was held up by the fact that one of the species of Uca, commonly found on practically all of the islands, proved to need a new name, which I expected to be introduced by Dr. Jocelyn Crane in her coming monograph of the genus Uca. However, Dr. Crane has now decided to refrain from giving a new name to this form. As several authors dealing with the species should like to have a valid name for it, the new name is now proposed here. Uca burgersi new species Gelasimus affinis Streets, 1872: 131 (not Gelasimus affinis Guérin, 1829). Gelasimus vocator p.p. Kingsley, 1880: 147. Uca mordax p.p. Note on some Stomatopoda from the Atlantic Coasts of Africa and America, with the description of a new species Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The Stomatopoda dealt with here belong to the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden and of the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam; they were collected at the African Westcoast and in the Caribbean Sea. I wish to express here my sincere gratitude to Prof. Dr. H. Boschma at Leiden and to Prof. Dr. L. F. de Beaufort at Amsterdam, who kindly placed this material at my disposal. Some of the specimens are already mentioned by Rathbun (1919) in the "Rapport betreffende een voorloopig onderzoek naar den toestand van de Visscherij in de kolonie Curaçao". All the specimens are preserved in spirit. Squilla Fabr. Squilla empusa Say Squilla empusa Say, 1818, Journ. Acad Nat. Sci. Philad., vol. 1, p. 250. Squilla empusa H. Milne-Edwards, 1837,...

Interesting records of whale epizoic crustaceans from the Dutch North Sea coast (Cirripedia, Amphipoda) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B.; Fransen, C.H.J.M..

A revision of the Indo-West Pacific spiny Lobsters of the Panulirus Japonicus group Naturalis
George, R.W.; Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION As a result of separate investigations on Panulirus japonicus (sens, lat.), the present authors independently came to the conclusion that more than one species was included under that name. The first author (George), when in 1958 studying specimens of the Western Australian spiny lobster which at that time was indicated by the name Panulirus longipes (A. Milne Edwards) (a species considered by many authors to be synonymous with P. japonicus), was dissatisfied with that identification and obtained material of the typical P. longipes from Zanzibar. Comparison with this material showed that the Western Australian spiny lobster represented an unnamed species, which he then described as P. cygnus. He also arrived at the conclusion that P. japonicus...

De pissebedden (Crustacea Isopoda, Oniscoidea) van de ondergrondse kalksteengroeven in Zuid-Limburg Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
In the limestone quarries in the southern part of the province of Limburg, Netherlands, 13 species of Isopoda Oniscoidea were found during an intensive exploration (1946-1958) of the obscuricole fauna of these artificial caves. None of the species found is troglobiont, all have to be classed as troglophile or trogloxene, as all are to be met with also outside the caves. Four of the species (Platyarthrus hoffmannseggii, Philoscia muscorum, Trachelipus rathkii and Porcellio spinicornis) probably have to be ranged among the trogloxene, as all four were found only once, and then either near the cave entrance or at a place where the roof of the cave had collapsed and epigaean debris fallen in. All 13 species (with the possible exception of Porcellio laevis)...

The scyllarid lobsters (Crustacea: Decapoda: Palinuridea) collected by F. Peron and C.A. Lesueur during the 1800-1804 expedition to Australia Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The original figures of Scyllaridae by Lesueur and manuscript descriptions and notes by Péron, made during the 1800-1804 French Expedition to Australia, are now kept in the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle du Havre, and shed new light on the identity, type locality and whereabouts of these species. The figures and part of the descriptive material are reproduced here.

Nomenclatorial notes on European Macrurous Crutacea Decapoda Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The study of the older literature on Crustacea, from Linnaeus (1758) to H. Milne Edwards (1837), has been much neglected by modern carcinologists. A result of this is that many wrong names at present are used, especially for European species. The European species namely were most extensively studied by the older authors, while moreover in the middle of the previous century handbooks on the carcinological fauna of several parts of Europe were published (for instance Bell's (1844-1853) "A History of the British stalk-eyed Crustacea", and Heller's (1863) " Die Crustaceen des südlichen Europa"), which for many authors made a consultation of older works superfluous. It is astonishing to note how many names at present are used incorrectly for species of the...

Scientific Results of the Surinam Expedition 1948-1949 : Part II. Zoology. No. 1. Crustacea Decapoda Macrura Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
During the 1948-1949 Scientific Surinam Expedition, thorough zoological, botanical and geological explorations have been made in the coastal area and in the anterior mountain region of Dutch Guiana. The number of macrurous Decapods collected is large, though the number of species represented is relatively small. These shrimps have been collected at the following localities: 1. Coronieweg. This is the highway from Coronie to Paramaribo. Coronie is situated in the N.W. part of Surinam, about at 5° 53' N 56° 20' W. The Coronieweg localities are accompanied by a piket- and a km-number, e.g., Coronieweg, piket 216, km N 0.2. The piket-number indicates the distance in hundreds of meters which a certain point on the highway (the piket) is situated east of...

Enkele interessante Nederlandse crustacea Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..

Note on the Zuiderzee Crab, Rithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) subspecies tridentatus (Maitland) Naturalis
Buitendijk, A.M.; Holthuis, L.B..
In the former Zuiderzee, the large brackish inland sea of the Netherlands, a species of crab was commonly met with, which species generally was considered to be endemic in the Dutch inland waters, and was named by most authors Heteropanope tridentata (Maitland). Examination of material and literature convinced us that the crab does not belong to the genus Heteropanope at all, but is a Rithropanopeus, while it is so closely related to the American Rithropanopeus harrisii (Gould), that we only can consider it to be a subspecies of that species. The synonymy of the Dutch form is as follows: Pilumnus tridentatus Maitland, 1874, Tijdschr. Nederl. dierk. Ver., vol. 1, p. 232. non Pilumnus tridentatus Maitland, 1876, Tijdschr. Nederl. dierk. A new fresh-water prawn of the genus Macrobrachium (Crustacea Decapoda, Caridea) from Madagascar Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Due to the kindness of Mr. Y. Therezien, Ingénieur-hydrobiologiste of the Centre Technique Forestier Tropical at Tananarive, Madagascar, the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie received at several occasions freshwater Crustacea from Madagascar. Two previous reports (Holthuis, 1964, 1965) dealt with the crayfishes and the atyid shrimps of these collections. Among the fresh-water Palaemonid prawns a new species of Macrobrachium was found, which is the subject of the present note. It is a great pleasure to dedicate this beautiful species to Mr. Therezien. Cavernicolous And Terrestrial Decapod Crustacea From Northern Sarawak, Borneo Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
During the 1977-1978 Royal Geographical Society Mulu (Sarawak) Expedition a number of Decapod Crustacea was obtained. Some were collected by Mr. Philip Chapman in the course of studies of the invertebrates of the limestone caves in the Gunong Mulu National Park, 4th Division of Sarawak, and the Niah National Park south of Miri. Another expedition member, Dr. N. M. Collins, collected several crabs in pitfall traps and one in a soil core in the course of studies of terrestrial invertebrates of the Mulu area. I am most indebted to Messrs Chapman and Collins for placing this interesting collection of cavernicolous and terrestrial Decapoda at my disposal, and for the extensive information on the localities, habitats and the biology of the species, as well as...

Necora, a new genus of European swimming crabs (Crustacea Decapoda, Portunidae) and its type species, Cancer puber L., 1767 Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The new genus Necora is split off from the Portunid genus Liocarcinus Stimpson, 1871. A single species, Cancer puber L., 1767, is assigned to it. As the identity of Cancer puber L. is not certain (the original description fits Cancer corrugatus Pennant better) and as no type material is known to exist, a neotype specimen is selected so as to enable the specific name puber to be used for the species to which it has been applied for more than 150 years.

The identity of Hapalopoda investigator Filhol, 1885 (Decapoda, Penaeidae) and other shrimps collected by the 1880-1883 "Travailleur" and "Talisman" expeditions Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
In 1880, 1881, and 1882 the French research vessel "Travailleur" explored the deep waters of the Bay of Biscay (1880, 1881, 1882), off the Portuguese coast (1881, 1882), the Mediterranean (1881) and the eastern Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay as far south as the Canary Islands (1882). In 1883 the "Travailleur" was replaced by the larger "Talisman", which ship explored the eastern Atlantic between the Bay of Biscay and the Cape Verde Islands, visiting also the Azores, and going as far west as 31°34'N 41°15'W (of Greenwich = 43°35'W of Paris; the longitudes of the "Travailleur" and "Talisman" stations were always given relative to Paris). A select company of French zoologists was on board the "Talisman" on her (June-August) 1883 cruise. Among these...
