The authors give data on the catches, during 1982, of Chaunax pictus from Bay of Biscay, of Carcharhinus sp. from Arcachon basin and of scabbard-fish Lepidopus caudatus from la Rochelle. They notify of rather abundant observations of sunfish Mola mola, perhaps in connection with the hot summer. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |

An important eruption of Piton de La Fournaise on the Reunion Island started at April 2007. A large number of killed fishes were found floating on the sea infront of lava flows. More than 400 specimens were caught: 81 species for 42 families were identified. In the majority, these were deep species living between -100m and -1000m depth. 47 species are new for the ichthyologic fauna of the Reunion Island and about 12 species are probably new for the Science. This phenomenon, known from Hawaii and Galapagos, was not yet observed at the Reunion Island. |

Out of two specimens of Sagamichthys schnakenbecki (Kreff, 1973) (pisces, Clupeiformes, Searsiidae), measuring 112 and 142 mm L.st., caught with a high-opening trawl during the 1973 Rockall-Faeroe campaign of the "N.O. Thalassa" (station Z 55, 24.05.1973, 56 0 43'N 16 0 16'W, 780 m deep), we observed an unreported photophore in this fish family. It is a long mass of luminous tissue with a pretty irregular outline, orientated more or less sideways on to the edge of the mandible (fig. 1). This photophore is located on the posterior external side of this bone roughly where the edges of the two supramaxillas cover up. We named it maxilla organ (organe maxillaire) and gave it the following abbreviation MXO. (unverified OCR) |

Estimation of changes in the relative abundance of fish species in catches off Arcachon, on the shelf and in the Bassin d'Arcachon, from 1727 to the present day, shows that some previously dominant species are becoming scarce. Some are actually not caught now in the south of the Bay of Biscay. Among these are the large bottom-living elasmobranchs with low reproduction rates, such as Echinorhinus brucus, Squatina squatina, Raja batis, Raja brachyura, Dasyatis pastinaca, Myliobatis aquila, Galeorhinus galeus, Mustelus asterias, Raja clavata, ,.. and some actinopterygians, such as Trigla lyra, while catches of Eutrigla gurnardus are much reduced. Bottom trawling is principally responsible for these reductions but all fishing methods used there have... |

More than 8060 fishes of twelve different species were rodcaught in La Tremblade between 1949 and 1964 in Seudre Estuary and along the Côte Sauvage beach. The meagre represents 46 % of catches, the mullets 20 % and the spotted bass 15 %. The most common fishes caught early in spring are the bass, then the flounder and the spotted bass. The eagle ray, the eel, the sand-smelt, the conger and the mullets are more abundant in July. Whereas the gilt-head and the meagre are mostly caught in August. At least 62 % of catches have affinities for warm temperate waters. There are somme connections between the abundance of catches and climatic changes. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |

The authors give some data on the Ichthyological observations during 1998. They give data on the meagre Argyrosomus regius with the first catches of mature specimens from the South Bay of Biscay during January, March, April and the detrimental important catches of juveniles. They list the records in the North of Spain of shortnose greeneye Chlorophthalmus agassizii recorded from the first time from the Bay of Biscay, of Pompano Trachinatus ovatus and of Almaco jack Seriola rivoliana recorded from the first time from the French Channel and from the North Sea. They list the french records of the escolar Lepidocybium flavobrunneum recorded from the first time from the Bay of Biscay. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |
