Organic farming - stewardship for food security, food quality, environment and nature conservation Organic Eprints
Schnug, Ewald; Haneklaus, Silvia; Rahmann, Gerold; Paulsen, Hans-Marten; Walker, Robin.
Conventional agriculture is associated with problems such as pesticide residues in soils and plants, contamination of meat with antibiotics and hormones, and eutrophication of water bodies. An alternative for consumers is the consumption of products from organic farming. Organic management is possible on arable farms, although livestock is often a crucial part of the system as manure and slurry can contribute significantly to maintaining closed nutrient cycles. Independent of the management system, it is not possible to exclude nutrient losses to the environment on agricultural fields, but acceptable loads need to be defined. Organic farming can contribute to environmental protection and nature conservation in many ways, for instance by improving soil...

Neue Aufgaben der Vertrauensbildung in der Ökologischen Landwirtschaft Organic Eprints
Oppermann, Rainer; Rahmann, Gerold.

On farm organic dairy sheep and goat breeding in Germany Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold.
In the period from 1992 to 1998 the fat and protein yield of both flocks could be increased. A specific breeding strategy had an important contribution to the increase but the environmental impacts on animal productivity is enormous (e.g. the very wet summer season 1994). A wrong decision in breeding bucks (dairy sheep in 1992-1994) had an negative effect on the productivity.

New insights into organic farming in Germany – empirical results of a survey in 218 farms Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Nieberg, Hiltrud.
A comprehensive description of the recent structure, performance and developments of organic farming in Germany does not exist. Because of this gap the Institute of Organic Farming and the Institute of Farm Economics of the German Federal Agricultural Research Centre (FAL) have carried out an interdisciplinary empirical analysis of the state of the art of Organic Farming in Germany in 2002-2003. In addition to the status-quo-analysis an important function of the study was to establish a long lasting research-organic farming network. Farm economists, organic crop production specialists, organic livestock specialists and sociologists are member of the scientific network. 218 randomly chosen farms throughout Germany have been surveyed in 2002/2003. The...

Do endangered sheep breeds have an advantage in organic farming? Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold.
Endangered breeds are not compulsory for organic farming, but adapted and local breeds are considered suitable for Organic Farming. In the year 2001, 240 ewes of six different breeds were introduced on the experimental farm of the Institute of Organic Farming in Trenthorst. Two were high yielding breeds, four older endangered German breeds. The whole herd was kept in one herd in a low input – low output system, comparable to agri-environmental schemes. The scientific programme was to follow the herd’s development in terms of health status, growth rate and product qualities. After three lambing seasons, no real advantages could be found for the old breeds. Nevertheless, high yielding and old breeds did not show big differences in production and health...

Neues aus der Ökologischen Tierhaltung 2008 - Vorwort Organic Eprints
Schumacher, Ulrich; Rahmann, Gerold.

Special aspects of ecological farm management on pre-harvest food safety in meat and milk Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold.
Consumer expect organic food as safe and healthy. The standards of organic farming are able to prevent contaminations and diseases effecting human health direct and indirect: · Direct food safety means the prohibition of specific production and processing inputs. Organic farming is minimising the use of external inputs (positive lists), the prohibition of synthetic fertilisers, pesticids, preservatives and additives, no GMOs and irradiation, no human waste water slurry (heavy methals, chemical hazards etc.) on fields, no preventive use of antibiotics, double withhold period after veterinary treatments as well as no hormons in animal production. · Indirect food safety means the protection of the abiotic and biotic environment. Ground water is not...

Organic Eprints
Schumacher, Ulrich; Rahmann, Gerold; Oppermann, Rainer.

Organic agriculture world-wide offers the promise of a future to produce and distribute food and other farm products in a healthy, ecologically sound, truly sustainable and fair way. The full benefits of organic agriculture are just now being realized—from ecosystem services to the provision of healthier food - yet, to reach its full potential organic farming needs to address many challenges. While organic agriculture has grown in strength and is in the most favorable position it has ever been in with respect to market conditions, government policies and international institutional support, it still does not have adequate resources to continue its expansion. The Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM (TIPI) has developed a vision and an agenda to advance...

Organic Livestock Production Sustainable increase of meat production on natural grasslands in Namibia - research methodology and preliminary results - Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Hülsebusch, Christian; Isele, Judith; Idel, Anita.
Improvement in grazing systems are necessary to increase the productivity and sustainability of grassland utilisation in semi-arid Africa. Changes in stock density and stocking rate as described in the concept of “Holistic Management” can be an option of improvement. This management concept has not been tested scientifically yet, despite farmers report good success. “Holistic Management” is carried out on the farm is Springbockvley in Namibia since 1993. Since 2014, the grazing system has been changed to prove the concept. Approximately 800 head of cattle and 3,000 head of sheep are used in different herd densities have been introduced on a 9,500 ha farm. The vegetation and the stock productivity are assessed for the first experimental year. The designed...

Breeding goats for organic production in Germany Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold.
With only 120,000 females (year 2000), goat keeping is a niche activity in animal husbandry in Germany. Most of the goats (about 90%) are kept on part-time farms. The main reasons they are kept are as a hobby, for milk production and for landscape management; in many cases it is a non-profit oriented activity. There are estimates (no official statistics exist) that 20,000 goats are milked and 10,000 are used in landscape management to avoid shrub succession on protected biotopes. In the year 2000 10% of the goats (12,000) were kept on organic farms but not all for economic reasons. Because the dairy breeds in Germany (White and Brown German Alpine) are selected under intensive keeping conditions, breeding under the restrictions of organic farming is...

Organic Sheep and Goat Farming Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold.
Organic sheep and goat farming is on the rise in Germany and the EU. Many consumers see organic farms as an example of the "intact world" of farming and rural living. Agrienvironmental schemes support conversion from conventional towards organic farming. Only few know how difficult organic sheep and goat farming is from animal welfare, ecological and economic perspective. Newcomers particularly overestimate the production and marketing potential of the field, and underestimate the associated husbandry (e.g., health) and labour problems. It usually takes years to learn how to operate a sheep and goat farm and make it profitable. In addition to patience, good animal handling skills, and marketing ability, qualified professional and veterinary advice is...

Die deutschen Märkte für Ökologische Nahrungsmittel im Jahr 2007 - Perspektiven und Probleme Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Oppermann, Rainer.

DIFFERENCES IN FEEDING PRACTICES ON ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL DAIRY FARMS – DATA FROM A FARM NETWORK Organic Eprints
Warnecke, Sylvia; Schulz, Franziska; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Rahmann, Gerold.
Organic and conventional feeding practices of dairy cattle differ due to specific regulations that are in place for organic farming. E.g., dairy cows must have access to pasture, and soybean extract, a very common concentrate in conventional dairy feeding, may not be fed. The joint project “Climate Effects and Sustainability of Agricultural Systems – Analyses in a Network of Pilot Farms” determined feeding practices and feed qualities on a total of 44 dairy farms (22 organic and conventional, each) in four German regions for 2008, 2009 and 2010. The average diets of the dairy cows differed considerably between organic and conventional dairy farms. Organic farms with a high percentage of hay in the diet were found in East and South Germany. The low...

Ökologische Schaf- und Ziegenhaltung - 100 Fragen und Antworten für die Praxis Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold.

Halle, Ingrid; Rahmann, Gerold; Holle, Romana.
Organic products like milk and beef are enriched with polyunsaturated fats (PUFA) due to higher intake of roughage than conventional livestock. There is little knowledge of whether eggs are enriched as well. 100%-diets have to be developed to fulfil con-sumer expectations, animal nutritional demands and improve product quality. In an experiment with organic rape cake (heat treated and non-treated) the laying hen TETRA was tested for egg quality and PUFA. It was found that eggs from hens which have been fed with rape cake had significantly higher PUFA than those fed with stan-dard organic feed stuff rations.
