Entwicklung einer modernen Bio-Tafelkirschenproduktion Erhebungsresultate 2004 - 2007 Organic Eprints
Häseli, Andreas; Weibel, Franco.
Currently the market demand for Swiss organic sweet cherries is far above the actual production. However, organic sweet cherry production is under high pressure to change the cultivation system and cultivars in order to meet the new requirements of the market for a regular supply of faultless and big-sized fruit. Additionally there is a necessity to for a more economical management. In this study we assessed the agronomic and economic result of a modern organic sweet cherry orchard over the first 4 cropping years. The orchard is equipped with modern cultivars like Kordia, Regina etc. and a plastic cover to prevent rain-due cracking and Monilia disease. Sideward’s an insect net is fitted to exclude cherry fly infestation. The results prove that...

Development of a Management Tool to Indicate the Environmental Impact of Organic Viticulture Organic Eprints
Fragoulis, Georgios; Trevisan, Marco; di Guardo, Andrea; Scorce, Andrea; van der Meer, Markus; Weibel, Franco; Capri, Ettore.
Organic viticulture is an important part of the European Union organic farming sector, and, according to the most recent surveys, 1.5% of European Union wine originates from organic farms, with an upward trend. This paper describes an environmental impact of an organic viticulture indicator (EIOVI) that can be reliably used in the management of organic vineyards. The EIOVI can be used as a decision support system for farmers and other property managers by evaluating the potential ecological impact of their choices, thus optimizing management options. The tool allows the simulation of vineyard management based on six agricultural and ecological modules. The EIOVI is a fuzzy expert system that calculates the relationship between the modules on the basis of a...

Organic fruit production in humid climates of Europe: Bottlenecks and new approaches in disease and pest control Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Häseli, Andreas; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Weibel, Franco; Wyss, Eric.
The organic market has grown exponentially in Europe during the last ten years. However, the organic fruit industry has shown the lowest growth rates (1-5% market share) compared to other commodities. One major reason is the high production risk due to high disease and pest pressure in humid climates. Key pests and diseases in apple and pear include scab, sooty blotch, and fire blight as well as rosy apple aphid, pear sucker, and codling moth. In cherry, damages due to brown rot (Monilinia) and the cherry fruit fly make organic production almost unfeasible. In an ideal organic system, all possible measures that lead to improved stability of the system must be implemented. In fruit production, such measures include (i) use of resistant varieties (scab),...

Cocoa in Full-sun Monocultures vs. Shaded Agroforestry Systems under Conventional and Organic Management in Bolivia Organic Eprints
Schneider, Monika; Andres, Christian; Trujillo, German; Alcon, Freddy; Amurrio, Patricia; Seidel, Renate; Weibel, Franco; Milz, Joachim.
Cocoa is a crucial export commodity for many developing countries and provides income for millions of smallholders. However, cocoa cultivation has resulted in habitat destruction, biodiversity loss and soil degradation. While much of the world’s cocoa is produced in arguably unsustainable full-sun monoculture systems, shaded agroforestry systems may be an alternative for sustainable cocoa production. However, data-based information on advantages and limitations of different cocoa production systems are limited and pairwise comparisons on the long-term performance of cocoa monocultures and agroforestry systems under conventional and organic management are literally inexistent. The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) is pioneering to fill this...

Analyzing Coronas of Fruits and Leaves Organic Eprints
Sadikov, Aleksander; Kononenko, Igor; Weibel, Franco.
We implemented a system GDV Assistant (Gas Discharge Visualisation Technique) for parameterization and visualization of coronas of humans and plants. Besides standard parameters, developed by the team of Prof. Korotkov, the program includes some additional numerical parameters. In last few years in several studies we recorded coronas of apple tree leaves and fruits in order to verify and compare their vitality under different conditions. We used GDV Assistant for preprocessing and for numerical parameterization of coronas and we used various machine learning algorithms for analyzing the databases of parameterized corona pictures. The results of our studies show that coronas of leaves and fruits give useful information about the stress status of...

Innovative design and management to boost functional biodiversity of organic orchards : the ECOORCHARD project Organic Eprints
Warlop, Francois; Penvern, Servane; Weibel, Franco; Herz, Annette; Porcel, Mario; Tchamitchian, Marc; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Orchards are perennial cultures, and, especially in organic fruit production it is essential to design and manage orchards in a way which favours beneficials such as insect predators and parasitoids over pests and diseases. As landscape-dominating crops their management affects overall biodiversity in the agricultural landscape. Increasing plant biodiversity and habitats in such a way that beneficials are favoured is called Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB). The value of FAB for reducing pesticide use in fruit production is generally acknowledged, and many growers try to increase it. However, they lack situation-specific information about how to drive and assess biodiversity to optimize FAB. ECOORCHARD is therefore combining several approaches: (i)...

Regulatory Framework for Plant Protection in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Speiser, Bernhard; Tamm, Lucius; Weibel, Franco.
Plant protection in organic farming has to simultaneously comply with two sets of regulations: regulations on organic production and pesticide legislation. This chapter describes the organic approach to plant protection, including the role of systems management versus direct interventions, the range of authorised substances and the procedures for authorising new substances and the withdrawal of old substances. External factors not related to organic farming also influence the availability of plant protection products. Scientific, regulatory and economic aspects may limit the registration of substances in a given country. On the other hand, there is an alternative route for the registration of fertilisers and plant strengtheners in some countries. As a...

Häseli, Andi; Weibel, Franco; Tschabold, Jean-Luc; Suter, Francisco; Daniel, Claudia.

Ekologické ovocnářství by navíc mělo být i vzorem v ekologickém přístupu ke krajině a půdě. Tato publikace mimo jiné ukazuje, jak lze pomocí přirozených biotopů využívat samoregulační schopnosti sadu a které pěstební systémy podporují dobrý zdravotní stav dřevin a usnadňují péči o sad.

Cocoa agroforestry systems vs. monocultures under conventional and organic management - results from tropical Bolivia Organic Eprints
Andres, Christian; Milz, Joachim; Seidel, Renate; Trujillo, German; Alcon, Freddy; Weibel, Franco; Schneider, Monika.
Cocoa is one of the most important export commodities for many developing countries and provides income for millions of smallholders. The expansion of cocoa production has resulted in habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, and soil degradation. The prevalent cocoa production systems worldwide are conventional monoculture full sun systems. Agroforestry systems are argued to be a viable strategy for sustainable cocoa production. However, data-based information on advantages and limitations of different cocoa production systems is limited. Pairwise comparisons on the long-term performance of cocoa monocultures and agroforestry systems under conventional and organic management are inexistent. Ecological Apple Production: a Comparison of Organic and Integrated Apple-growing Organic Eprints
Bertschinger, Lukas; Mouron, Patrik; Dolega, Ewa; Höhn, Heinrich; Holliger, Eduard; Husistein, Alfred; Schmid, Andi; Siegfried, Werner; Widmer, Albert; Zürcher, Matthias; Weibel, Franco.
In 1995, an experiment was planted at Wädenswil for comparing organic and integrated apple production. The overall goal of this experiment was to develop a data set which allows for an objective overall comparison of the two production concepts. Horticultural, ecological and economical traits were looked at. In practical terms, the study should particularly clarify how suitable the two systems are for producing marketable fresh fruit under Swiss conditions. The approach of an on-station comparison with a split-plot design with 3 replicate blocks and the factors “production system” (1st factor) and “variety” (2nd factor) was chosen. Ninety-four percent of Swiss apple acreage is managed according to integrated production, and 5% according to organic...
