The challenge of collecting and publishing data on organic agriculture worldwide Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Lernoud, Julia; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Globally, organic farming continues to grow and, in many countries, has reached wide acceptance amongst farmers, consumers, market actors, policymakers, and the public. According to the latest available data (per 31.12.2014), 43.7 million hectares are under organic agricultural management, and this constitutes almost one percent of the global agricultural land; the global market is estimated to be 80 billion USD (Willer & Lernoud 2016). These data, which are mostly based on national data sources, are annually compiled by FiBL, which has been collecting and publishing data on organic agriculture worldwide since 2000. They are widely used and quoted by governments drawing up action plans for organic agriculture; researchers; market actors; market...

The quality of organic market data: providing data that is both fit for use and convenient Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Gerrard, Catherine L.; Hempel, Corinna; Losták, Michal; Vieweger, Anja; Husák, Jakub; Stolze, Matthias; Hamm, Ulrich; Padel, Susanne; Willer, Helga; Vairo, Daniela; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Members of the organic supply chain need high-quality data to make correct investment decisions, but data with sufficient depth and quality are not widely available in Europe. The quality of available data is a key concern for both data collectors and data users. The aim of this study is to identify whether the commonly used quality attributes (accuracy, coherence, comparability, timeliness, punctuality, accessibility, relevance), which have been developed from the perspective of data collectors, are also appropriate from the perspective of end users of organic market data. A further aim is to assess whether the data quality needs of end users are being met by the existing data. The results of two surveys carried out in Europe, one of data collectors and...

Europe: Overview Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga.
Organic agriculture continues to develop dynamically in Europe. In most countries the organic area is on the increase and the market continues to grow. This positive development is also due to several policy support measures; such as funding under rural development programmes, legal protection, action plans as well as support for research and advice The organic sector, represented by the EU Group of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM EU Group), plays an important role in the development of organic food and farming in Europe.

Current status of organic farming world-wide Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga.
Abstract In this paper some current data on organic farming are presented, based on the global survey on organic farming carried out 2007/2008 by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM and Foundation Ecology & Agriculture (SOEL). Organic agriculture is developing rapidly and is now practiced in more than 130 countries of the world. Its share of agricultural land and farms continues to grow in many countries. According to the latest survey on global organic farming, 30.4 million hectares of agricultural land were managed organically at the end of 2006, constituting a growth of 1.8 million hectares compared to 2005. Additionally, according to this survey, there are more...

Building a global platform for organic farming research, innovation and technology transfer Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Andres, Christian; Willer, Helga; Baker, Brian P..
Organic food and farming systems have a great untapped potential to provide the world with healthy, high-quality food that is produced and distributed in an ecologically sound and fair way, but numerous production challenges and barriers slow the adoption of organic practices. Innovations addressing these challenges are not being developed sufficiently because of insufficient capacity in research, development and technologytransfer, especiallyinAfrica, Asia and Latin America. Given the limited resources, as well as the specific needs of organic food and farming systems, different pathways are needed to develop new technologies that are compatible with the principles of organic farming. The Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM...

Schaack, Diana; Lernoud, Julia; Schlatter, Bernhard; Willer, Helga.
In 2012, the organic market continued to grow in the European Union, even though some countries were still affected by the economic crisis, leading to stagnation or even decline. According to data provided by the EU-funded project OrganicDataNetwork(www.organicdatanetwork.net), the organic market in Europe increased by approximately 6 percent in 2012. It now amounts to approximately 22.8 billion euros (European Union: 20.9 billion euros). In this article, key developments of the organic market as well as tables and graphs are presented.

Country Report on Organic Food and Farming Research in Germany Organic Eprints
Lange, Stefan; Williges, Ute; Saxena, Shilpi; Willer, Helga.
Recently, research about organic farming has gained strong impulses in Germany. Schools of higher education, as well as state research centres steadily opened up, and with the funding under the Federal Organic Farming Scheme BÖL1 organic farming research has been strengthened substantially. Research about organic farming has a long tradition in Germany, going as far back as into the twenties of the last century. At that time the first – mainly biodynamic – pioneers started to carry out research on their farms. The Institute for Biodynamic Research IBDF2 founded in 1950, was one of the first private research institutions in the world. Also the first university chair for organic agriculture emerged in Germany, where until today more specific...

Growth Trends in European Organic Food and Agriculture Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Schaack, Diana; Bteich, Marie Reine.
In Europe today, organic agricultural land, operators4 and markets5, in almost all countries, continue to develop and grow. Furthermore in a global context Europe continues to be a forerunner in organic agriculture. This positive development in Europe and in particular in the European Union (EU) is due to a number of reasons, including strong consumer demand, legal protection and requirements for organic production and labelling as set out in EU and national legislation, and the development of private organic standards. In addition, policy support measures, such as conversion and maintenance payments for organic production and other relevant measures, provided for in most countries under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), Rural Development Programmes...

Erhebung zu Bio-Marktdaten in Europa – Datenlücken, Klassifizierungen, Definitionen und Qualitätschecks Organic Eprints
Schaack, Diana; Willer, Helga.
One of the aims of the EU-funded OrganicDataNetwork project is to collect, store in a common format and provide access to currently available data on organic markets in Europe. Two surveys on production, retail sales, international trade data were carried out. The surveys have shown that a wide range of data is available but a number of challenges need to be tackled in the future. These challenges include lack of data, non-timeliness and incompleteness of data, as well as classification issues as – other than with the area and production data – almost every country uses a different classification/nomenclature for retail sales, export and import data. Other issues include non-harmonised definitions and data quality. For the first time, organic market data...
