International study on Artemia : 24. Cold storage of live Artemia nauplii from various geographical sources: potentials and limits in aquaculture OMA
Léger, P.; Vanhaecke, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Freshly-hatched Artemia nauplii from various geographical sources survived storage in a refrigerator (2-4°C) at densities of 2000 per ml and above. Except for Artemia from Chaplin Lake and Buenos Aires, naupliar viability was very high even after 48 h storage, and did not decrease significantly after a 24 h post-storage transfer to 25°C. Neither the naupliar dry weight nor biochemical composition changed significantly during refrigeration for most strains tested. Comparative culture-tests with stored and freshly-hatched nauplii as food for juvenile marine mysids Mysidopsis bahia M. and larval carp Cyprinus carpio L. revealed similar production performances.

Annual variability in the seasonal cycles of chlorophyll, nutrients and zooplankton on the North-West European continental shelf OMA
Bot, P.V.M.; Van Raaphorst, W.; Batten, S.; Laane, R.W.P.M.; Philippart, K.; Radach, G.; Frohse, A.; Schultz, H.; Van den Eynde, D.; Colijn, F..
Seasonal cycles of salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll and zooplankton at 8 locations on the West-European shelf were analysed with respect to their timing and magnitude in the period 1980-1984. A late spring bloom with low chlorophyll values (2-4 mg.m-³) is observed in the Irish Sea, off the Scottish east coast and the Channel entrance. An early spring bloom and relatively high chlorophyll values (7-12 mg.m-³) are found in the southern Bight and the Skagerrak, whereas a late spring bloom with high chlorophyll concentrations (24 mg.m-³) is found along the Dutch and Belgian coast. In contrast to the other regions, the peak of the phytoplankton cycle in the German Bight (Helgoland) occurs in the summer period instead of the spring period. The peak in the yearly...

Etudes hydrobiologiques sur les eaux saumâtres de Belgique: VII. Le microplancton des eaux du Port d'Ostende. Période 1953-1954 OMA
Van Meel, L..
In this work we studied some ecological factors and the floral composition of phytoplankton (micro plankton) during the 1953-1954 period. We measured successively: the temperature, the pH, the alkaline, the chlorine, the dissolved oxygen, the concentration of phosphates and nitrates. The water of the Ostend port passes the scale a-mesohaline to polyhaline. The sampling of the phytoplankton has been worked out one time or several times in a month. The Bacillariophyceae play an important role, the Dinophyceae are relatively rare, as the Chryosophyceae, and the Chlorophyceae are meeting during the whole year, with the exception of January, February and April, in little quantities, except for November. Dominant species are: Coscinodiscus continues,...

Structural analysis of the meiobenthos communities of the shelf break area in two stations of the Gulf of Biscay (N.E. Atlantic) OMA
Vanreusel, A.; Vincx, M.; Van Gansbeke, D.; Gijselinck, W..
In a first attempt to obtain information in order to characterize the shelf break zone, the meiobenthos communities of two fine sandy stations of 190 m and 325 m depth in the Gulf of Biscay off the Spanish coast were investigated in relation to some environmental characteristics (sediment composition, chlorophyll a content, redox values). The nematodes, which are the dominant taxon, were studied in detail. Their communities are relatively poor in densities (840 and 779 individuals per 10cm2 and biomass (0.137 and 0.334mg dwt/10cm2) compared to those of shallow coastal areas. The dominance of small species (mean individual biomass: 0.169 and 0.423 µg dwt) and a low total biomass can be related to...

The Hydrozoa: a new classification in the light of old knowledge OMA
Bouillon, J.; Boero, F..
The Hydrozoa, on the basis of embryological, developmental and morphological features, are considered as a superclass of the phylum Cnidaria comprising three classes: the Automedusa (with the subclasses: Actinulidae, Narcomedusae and Trachymedusae), characterised by direct development of the planula into a medusa; the Hydroidomedusa (with the subclasses: Anthomedusae, Laingiomedusae, Leptomedusae, Limnomedusae, and Siphonophorae), characterised by a polyp stage budding medusae through a medusary nodule; and the Polypodiozoa, with complex endocellular parasitic life cycles.

Interpretation of particle spectra of electronic counters by microscopical methods OMA
Bakker, C.; Prins, T.C.; Tackx, M.L.M..
1. Using monocultures or single species dominated natural phytoplankton, cell counts and volume estimations obtained by visual and electronic methods show reasonable agreement.Calibration seems possible (Figs.1-2).2. Further examples given (Fig. 3-4) show that microscopical identification of the volume peaks in electronic counter spectra of natural seston is not quite simple. Phytoplankton peaks may not be detected in the Counter spectrum. Shifts of Counter peaks to the left side of the visual spectrum may be found when cylindrical, elongated or needle- like phytoplankton dominate the sample.3. Both visual and electronic methods include potentially large errors. Possibly particle volume is either overestimated by the microscope and / or underestimated by...

Boundary conditions for heavy metals at the air-sea interface OMA
Dehairs, F.A.; Dedeurwaerder, H.; Dejonghe, M.; Decadt, G.; Gillain, G.; Baeyens, W.F.J.; Elskens, I..
During 1980 and 1981 the aerosol burden as well as the wet and dry atmospheric fall-out of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe and Mn to the sea have been studied in the Belgian coastal area. Atmospheric Cu, Zn and Cd are observed to be introduced into the sea mainly by wet fall-out, while Fe, Mn and also Pb have a dry and wet fall-out of similar magnitude. Of these elements, Cu, Zn and Cd have the highest washout factors. Furthermore, for all elements, excepted Mn, discrepancies exist between washout factors above land and sea, with values up to 5 times larger above the sea.On the scale of the North Sea, atmospheric fall-out of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd exceeds by one order of magnitude the combined input of the rivers Scheldt, Rhine and Meuse, while fall-out of Fe and Mn is of...

Temperature, salinity and food thresholds in two brackish-water bacterivorous nematode species: assessing niches from food absorption and respiration experiments OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
Respiration and food assimilation of two estuarine bacterivorous nematodes, the rhabditid Pellioditis marina and the monhysterid Diplolaimelloides meyli, were measured at a range of temperatures, salinities, and food densities. The aim of this study was to identify the fundamental niche of both species in their natural habitat, and to investigate the relative importance of food and abiotic factors in determining presence and success of nematode species in the highly dynamic estuarine tidal environments of macrophyte detrital habitats. Of the three factors studied, salinity least impacted P. marina and D. meyli. Respiration and assimilation in both species showed only minor...

A comparison between models describing the influence of temperature on the development rate of copepods OMA
Heip, C.H.R..
Four mathematical expressions relating development time to temperature are compared. All four yield good predictions of the development rate of the copepod Tachidius discipes. The use of the equation of Belehradek is criticized. It is concluded that the power equation D= aTb gives the best approximation in this case.

General description of the Scheldt estuary OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Van Eck, B.T.M.; Lambert, C.; Wollast, R.; Goeyens, L..
A general description of the Scheldt estuary, including the hydrology, the sediment transport, the productivity and the biodegradation with respect to their influence on the trace metal behaviour in the Scheldt estuary, is given. The river basin can be divided in several sections according to their morphological, hydrodynamical and sedimentary properties. The zone from km 78 to 55, which corresponds roughly with the salinity zone from 2 to 10 psu, is the zone of high turbidity, high sedimentation and of oxygen depletion, especially in the summer period. That area is called the geochemical filter because the solid/dissolved distribution of the trace metals is controlled by redox, adsorption/desorption, complexation and precipitation/coprecipitation...

Technological improvements for the cultivation of invertebrates as food for fishes and crustaceans: 1. Devices and methods OMA
Persoone, G.; Sorgeloos, P..
Technological problems can be considered as one of the bottlenecks of research concerned with culturing aquatic invertebrates in the laboratory, as well as the pilot and mass production stages. Oxygenation problems, circulation of the food and sedimentation problems can easily be solved by adapting the shape of the culturing vessels, i. e., by using funnel-shaped bottoms or high, narrow cylinders. In both cases, the food particles, settled on a very small bottle area, can easily be blown back into suspension using an air pump, which re-aerates the medium at the same time. A number of culturing devices for different categories of organisms, including algae are described and commented on. The only power source involved is compressed air which aerates, keeps...
