| The spider Latrodectus mirabilis (Holmberg, 1876) is commonly found in cereals crops of central Argentina. We studied its diet composition at the field and capture rate on leaf-cutting ants based on laboratory experiments. This study comprises the first approach that documents the diet of L. mirabilis in wheat and oat fields of central Argentina. We identified 1,004 prey items collected from its webs during the last phenological stages of both cereal crops. The prey composition was variable but the spiders prey mainly on ants (Formicidae, Hymenoptera), who represented more than 86% of the total. | Os representantes da família Thaididae são organismos predadores de outros moluscos, perfurando suas conchas pela ação alternada de secreção oriunda do "Accessory Boring Organ" (ABO) e por raspagem através da rádula. Nesta família, o ABO está localizado na porção ventral mediano-anterior do pé. Os animais examinados neste estudo foram coletados na praia do Futuro, Fortaleza, em seguida levados ao laboratório para fixação e posterior tratamento histológico rotineiro. A porção glandular do ABO de Thais haemastoma (Linnaeus, 1758) se encontra alojada em uma cavidade circundada pela musculatura do pé e apresentando um ducto excretório que a comunica com o meio externo. | The diet of the benthic-feeding fish Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) was analyzed. Samples were taken bimonthly from December 1999 to January 2002, in three sites of the Ibicuí River, a tributary of Uruguay River basin (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). In each sampling point the specimens were collected in lentic and lotic environments. Gillnets and trammel nets were examined every 6 hours (6h, 12h, 18h and 24h). | The genus Homodiaetus Eigenmann & Ward, 1907 is revised and four species are recognized. Its distribution is restricted to southeastern South America, from Uruguay to Paraguay river at west to the coastal drainages of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Homodiaetus is currently distinguished from other genus of Stegophilinae by the combination of the following characters: origin of ventral-fin at midlength between the snout tip and the caudal-fin origin; opercle with three or more odontodes; and gill membranes confluent with the istmus. | ABSTRACT Here we provide a checklist of the flies of the families Acroceridae, Mydidae and Therevidae on the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Acroceridae are represented in Brazil by 30 species, and only Philopota tuberculata Westwood is recorded for the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The three reported species of Mydidae in the state, Gauromydas autuorii (D’Andretta), Messiasia zikani D’Andretta, and Messiasia notospila (Wiedemann) are among the 27 species now known in Brazil. There are 30 species of Therevidae in Brazil, and only one, Cyclotelus kroeberi (Cole) is known to occur in the state. |

| The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of seasonal variations on energy metabolism in different tissues of the freshwater crayfish Parastacus brasiliensis (von Martens, 1869). Crayfish were collected monthly from January 2001 to January 2003 in São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in a stream and in a culture tank. Haemolymph samples were collected from each crayfish in the field with a syringe, by puncturing the membrane at the base of the chelipeds. | Um inventariamento dos sifídeos foi realizado em cinco áreas com situações florísticas diferentes dentro do Parque Estadual Vila Velha, Ponta Grossa, Paraná, sul do Brasil. As áreas foram classificadas como Borda, Araucária, estágio inicial de sucessão (Fase 1), estágio intermediário de sucessão (Fase 2) e estágio avançado de sucessão (Fase 3). As coletas foram semanais durante o período de Setembro/1999 a Agosto/2000 utilizando-se armadilha Malaise. | The composition and the seasonality of the natural populations of Drosophila species in relation to the climatic variables temperature and rainfall were analyzed from September 1998 through October 1999 by monthly collections, in two woodlands in the Northwest of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The diversity dominance component curves were inclined, reflecting low diversity and high dominance of few species. Among the 25 species recorded, Drosophila sturtevanti Duda, 1927 was the most frequent and abundant. | ABSTRACT We present a new update of the list of birds of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, based on a thorough review of new records and evidences accumulated from February 2011 to July 2017. This is the fifth update since the first compilation based on a reasonably complete geographic coverage of the state, published by William Belton in 1978, and the second produced by a regional (informal) committee. It is also the first to widely use citizen science contributions available on shared portals and digital databases on the internet. | Phlebotomus oliverioi Barretto & Coutinho, 1941 was originally described based only on the male holotype and has since been considered junior-synonym of Psathyromyia brasiliensis (Costa Lima, 1932). The study of the holotype of Ph. oliverioi allowed us to conclude that the head of this specimen belongs to the genus Psychodopygus and the wings, thorax and abdomen belong to a different species of Psathyromyia. Thus, Ph. oliverioi is a not valid species, and must be removed from the synonym and excluded from the provisions of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Articles 17.2 and 23.8). | RESUMO Analisou-se a influência de fatores abióticos, distribuição longitudinal e temporal sobre a abundância de Brachymetra albinervis albinervis Amyot & Serville, 1843. Foram avaliados três sítios de um riacho de Cerrado: nascente, intermediário e foz, mensalmente durante um ano (junho de 2011 a maio de 2012). As variáveis abióticas aferidas foram: oxigênio dissolvido, temperatura da água, pH, condutividade elétrica, largura e profundidade do riacho. Em cada sítio, mensalmente coletou-se em transecção de 100 m lineares. Foram coletados 111 espécimes. A foz apresentou menor abundância quando comparada aos outros locais (F(2, 9) 13,721, p = 0,001).
